In 2023-24 the ICSSR gave Rs 53.95 lakh to 32 professional associations of social scientists to publish 34 research journals, and Rs 54 lakh to 15 organisations for maintenance and development. Since 1969 it has supported 1,141 journal grants and 427 maintenance grants. Year-wise counts are below.

How an association gets an ICSSR journal grant
What the numbers show
The Indian Council of Social Science Research gives two kinds of grants to professional associations of social scientists: a publication grant to keep their research journals going, and an ad hoc grant for maintenance and development. According to the ICSSR Annual Report 2023-24, 32 associations received Rs 53.95 lakh in 2023-24 to publish 34 journals, and 15 organisations received Rs 54 lakh for maintenance and development.
The trend over the years
Table 2.10 of the report counts grants each year. Journal publication grants were highest in the early 2010s, at 61 in 2012-13 and 66 in 2013-14. They fell through the late 2010s and have held between 32 and 35 a year since 2018-19. Maintenance and development grants moved the other way recently: from 3 in 2017-18 and 7 in 2020-21 to 15 in 2021-22, 16 in 2022-23 and 15 in 2023-24.
Over the long run, ICSSR counts 1,141 journal publication grants and 427 maintenance grants from 1969 to 31 March 2024. Most of the maintenance grants were given before 1990, when 229 were made.
What the figures do not tell you
The yearly figures count grants, not unique associations. Because each journal counts separately, one association with two journals can appear twice, which is why 32 associations produced 34 journal grants in 2023-24. The report gives the total amount only for 2023-24, so the size of earlier grants is not known from this table. It also does not say how many applications were turned down.
