What the numbers show

The Self Reliant India (SRI) Fund is a fund of funds. The government does not invest in MSMEs itself. It puts money into a Mother Fund run by NSIC Venture Capital Fund Limited (NVCFL), which in turn backs private daughter funds that pick and fund the businesses. The Ministry of MSME smartboard shows 766 MSMEs benefited and a Government of India contribution of Rs 3,013 crore up to 31 July 2026.

The trend over the years

The first full year of investment, 2022-23, was the busiest, with 250 MSMEs funded. The count fell to 107 in 2023-24 and then rose again to 145 in 2024-25 and 155 in 2025-26. The government contribution has moved differently: it was Rs 155 crore in 2021-22, stayed between Rs 418 crore and Rs 579 crore for three years, and reached Rs 900 crore in 2025-26, the highest so far. In the first four months of 2026-27 the fund had already put in Rs 386 crore and backed 34 MSMEs.

Daughter funds and new money

The Ministry of MSME Year End Review 2025 says 69 daughter funds had been empanelled with NVCFL by 30 November 2025, nine of them during 2025. A PIB backgrounder published on 14 May 2026 says Union Budget 2026-27 gave an extra Rs 2,000 crore to the fund to keep supporting smaller enterprises with risk capital.

What the figures do not tell you

The government contribution is only part of the money that reaches an MSME. Daughter funds are expected to bring in private capital alongside it, and that private share is not shown on the smartboard. Different official sources also report the total amount invested on different bases, so a figure quoted in one release may not match another. The count of MSMEs is cumulative and does not say how many of the businesses are still growing.
