How the police training medal is decided
What the numbers show
The Union Home Minister's Medal for Excellence in Police Training honours trainers and support staff in police training institutions. For 2017-18, the Ministry of Home Affairs received 560 nominations and 245 nominees were recommended as eligible, according to the list declared on 14 August 2019 and released by PIB.
Who won the medals
Central forces took a large share. CRPF won 24 medals and BSF 22, followed by CISF with 12 and ITBP and SSB with 8 each. Smaller central organisations such as the BPR&D, the Intelligence Bureau and the National Police Academy received between one and four.
Among states and UTs, Maharashtra led with 18 medals. Rajasthan and West Bengal had 10 each, and Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir 8 each. Most other states received between one and seven. Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh and Goa received one each.
The medal quota
The MHA standard operating procedure for the scheme set a total of 167 medals a year, divided between States, UTs and central forces according to sanctioned strength on 1 January 2013. It said the numbers would be reviewed every three years or after a major change in force strength. The 2017-18 count of 245 eligible nominees is higher than that original quota. The PIB release does not explain the difference.
What the figures do not tell you
The figures count medals, not the size of each force's training staff, so a large force can win more medals simply because it has more trainers. The list covers one year only.
Where to check for updates
BPR&D calls nominations and publishes the list of awardees on its website, and MHA releases the totals through PIB when the medals are declared.
