How support flows under Coir Vikas Yojana
What the numbers show
Coir Vikas Yojana is the Coir Board's umbrella scheme for training, research, market promotion and worker welfare. The MSME Ministry approved it for five years from 2021-22 to 2025-26 with an outlay of Rs 466.60 crore. In 2025-26, up to 31 December 2025, the Board trained 1,478 artisans and ran 70 stipendiary promotional programmes across states.
According to a PIB release of 14 October 2026, more than 68,000 people have been trained since 2014-15, over 1,400 promotional programmes held and more than 1,000 exporters helped to take part in exhibitions abroad.
Exports over the years
Exports are the clearest outcome the sector tracks. The Annual Report shows export value of Rs 3,77,897.91 lakh in 2020-21, a dip to Rs 3,39,690.84 lakh in 2023-24, and a recovery to Rs 4,34,345.15 lakh in 2024-25, when the quantity shipped also reached its highest level in the table at 13,42,843 tonnes. PIB puts 2025-26 exports at Rs 6,614.40 crore. China, the United States and the Netherlands were the largest buyers in 2025-26 up to December.
Funding for the Coir Board
The Ministry released almost the full allocation to the Coir Board from 2021-22 to 2023-24, rising from Rs 79.81 crore to Rs 92.15 crore. Releases fell to Rs 74.48 crore in 2024-25. For 2025-26 the budget estimate was Rs 104.39 crore, of which Rs 57.89 crore had been released by the end of December 2025. These figures cover all budget support to the Board, not only CVY.
Size of the sector
Coir fibre output has grown slowly, from 7,58,000 tonnes in 2020-21 to 8,01,300 tonnes in 2024-25. Cumulative employment in the Board's records was 7,51,788 people and cumulative coir unit registrations 17,332 at the end of 2024-25.
What the figures do not tell you
Employment and unit counts are cumulative, so they do not show how many units are working today. Training totals count people trained, not people who later started a business. Export value depends on global prices as well as on scheme support.
Where to check the numbers
The MSME Ministry publishes Coir Board figures every year in its Annual Report on msme.gov.in, and PIB carries occasional summaries of the sector.
