What is the Kala Academy Tiatr Competition?

Tiatr Competition is organised annually by Kala Academy Goa under the Art, Culture and Museums Department, Government of Goa, to encourage and promote the unique Goan theatre form of tiatr. Tiatr is a Konkani stage form built around acts called podd'dde and songs called kantaram, and the competition is the state's main platform for the form.

Participation is open to Goan institutions registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, whose registration is current. Entries are invited through press notes in the local dailies. Institutions that meet the scheme's requirements and submit their entries within the stipulated date are allowed to stage their tiatr performances in the sequence finalised by Kala Academy.

The competition is run in two divisions, the 'A' Group and the 'B' Group, with a separate and substantially larger prize structure for the 'A' Group.

What does a participating institution get?

Beyond prize money, Kala Academy supports each participating institution with:

  • A free auditorium with permissible infrastructure. Facilities beyond that are chargeable to the troupe.
  • Hire charges paid for two vehicles to transport artistes and stage materials, as per Kala Academy norms.
  • 80 per cent of the gate collection from ticket sales.
  • Prizes awarded on the recommendations of a panel of judges.

Entry to the public: tickets of Rs 50 are charged for admission to each show.

For a troupe, the combination of free venue, transport hire and 80 per cent of ticket revenue is often worth more than a mid-table prize, because it removes the two largest fixed costs of staging a tiatr.

Who is eligible to enter the Tiatr Competition?

An institution can enter if:

  • It is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • Its registration is valid at the time of application, which is why the scheme asks specifically for a copy of the renewed registration certificate.
  • It is a Goan institution and submits its entry within the date stipulated in the press note.

You are not eligible if:

  • You are an individual artiste or an unregistered group. An individual cannot apply in his or her own name; individual awards for acting, direction, singing, script and technical categories are decided among the artistes of the participating institutions.
  • Your society's registration has lapsed and not been renewed. An expired registration certificate disqualifies the entry however strong the production.
  • Your entry reaches Kala Academy after the last date printed in the press note.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory When it is due
Copy of the renewed registration certificate Yes With the entry form
Prescribed entry form of Kala Academy Goa Yes By the last date in the press note
Typed copy of the script Yes 3 days before the tiatr commences
Typed copy of the songs (kantaram) Yes 3 days before the tiatr commences

The split timeline is worth noting. The registration certificate and the entry form go in at the application stage, while the script and the kantaram follow later, three days before the performance date. Troupes that still have the script in draft when entries close are not shut out.

How to apply for the Tiatr Competition

  1. Watch for the press note in the local dailies by which Kala Academy invites entries. The last date for that year's edition is printed in the notice.
  2. Visit Kala Academy, Goa, and request a hard copy of the prescribed application form from the office at Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji, Goa.
  3. Fill in all the mandatory fields of the application form, paste the passport-sized photograph and sign across it if required, and attach self-attested copies of all mandatory documents, including the renewed registration certificate of the society.
  4. Submit the duly filled and signed application form along with the documents to the academy staff within the prescribed period, during office hours.
  5. Await the sequence of performances finalised by Kala Academy, which decides when your institution stages its tiatr.
  6. Submit the typed copies of the script and of the songs (kantaram) three days before the date on which your tiatr commences.

For more information, the number published with the scheme notice is 9158044466.

Key dates

Entries are invited each year by press note, so the closing date moves from year to year rather than being permanently fixed. For the edition announced in 2025, the last date to submit the completed application form was 6 June 2025, during office hours. Institutions should treat the press note as the authoritative notice for their own year and should not assume the previous year's date will repeat.

The other fixed date is internal to the competition: the script and kantaram deadline of three days before the commencement of the tiatr.

Why entries get rejected

  • Society registration not renewed or the certificate not attached.
  • Entry submitted after the last date printed in the press note.
  • Application made by an individual rather than by a registered institution.
  • Script or kantaram not submitted three days in advance, which disrupts the judging panel's preparation.
  • Incomplete form, missing photograph or unsigned declaration.

Grievance redressal

The authority for redressal of grievances for this scheme is the Member Secretary or the Chairman, Kala Academy Goa. Prizes are awarded on the recommendations of a panel of judges, and disputes about the conduct of the competition are taken to the Member Secretary at Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji.

The entry form is provided free of charge, and the only money that changes hands in the ordinary course is the Rs 50 ticket price paid by the audience, of which 80 per cent flows back to the participating institution.

How to check your application status

The Tiatr Competition is run offline through Kala Academy Goa's own office, so there is no online portal or application ID to track. Once your institution has submitted the entry form and the renewed registration certificate, status checks work through direct contact with the academy rather than a digital dashboard.

  • Call the helpline number published with the scheme notice, 9158044466, and quote your institution's name and the date you submitted the entry form. This is the fastest way to confirm your entry has been received and recorded.
  • Visit the Kala Academy office in person at Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji, Goa, during office hours, and ask the culture department staff handling the competition to check the received entries against your submission.
  • Watch for the performance sequence announcement. Once entries close, Kala Academy finalises the order in which institutions stage their tiatr. This sequence is the first concrete sign that your entry has been accepted; institutions not featured in it should follow up immediately rather than assuming an oversight will be corrected later.
  • Keep a copy of your submission acknowledgement, if the academy staff provided one at the time of filing. A dated receipt or stamped copy of the entry form is the only paper trail most institutions will have, since there is no SMS or email confirmation system tied to this scheme.
  • For results and prizes, status after the performance is decided by the panel of judges and announced by Kala Academy once all scheduled tiatrs in a group have been staged. Institutions can call the same helpline number or check subsequent press notices for the result announcement, since results are not published on a fixed date but only after judging concludes for that year's edition.

Because the whole process runs on annual press notes rather than a standing online system, the safest practice for any participating institution is to note down the name of the staff member handling entries and to follow up by phone at each stage, rather than waiting for the academy to proactively reach out.
