All Goa Classical Dance Competition
Goa state government scheme
All Goa Classical Dance Competition is a Kala Academy Goa contest in Bharatanatyam and Kathak for local students aged 12 to 20. Prizes are Rs 5,000 for first, Rs 3,000 for second, Rs 2,000 for third and five consolation prizes of Rs 500 each, with Rs 500 travel allowance per participant. Apply on the free form at Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji.
What is the All Goa Classical Dance Competition?
All Goa Classical Dance Competition is a promotion scheme run by Kala Academy Goa under the Art, Culture and Museums Department, Government of Goa. The competition is open for the Bharatanatyam and Kathak disciplines and is meant for local students between 12 and 20 years of age.
The scheme is deliberately narrow and it is worth being clear about its shape before preparing an entry. Only solo dance is considered; there is no group category. Costumes and accompanists are arranged by the participants at their own cost, so the Academy is providing the platform, the jury and the prize money rather than production support.
Kala Academy sits at Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, Campal, Panaji, and is Goa's principal state cultural institution. Its classical dance work also includes the long-running 'Nupur' Classical Dance Festival, which is a presentation festival rather than a competition; this scheme is the competitive counterpart aimed at students.
What a participant gets
- 1st Prize: Rs 5,000
- 2nd Prize: Rs 3,000
- 3rd Prize: Rs 2,000
- Five consolation prizes of Rs 500 each
- Rs 500 lump sum travel allowance for every participant, along with one accompanist
The travel allowance is the detail most participants miss. It is paid to every participant, not only to the winners, which meaningfully reduces the cost of travelling to Panaji from a distant taluka for a student who does not place.
Who is eligible for the All Goa Classical Dance Competition?
You can participate if:
- You are a local student.
- You are between 12 and 20 years of age.
- You perform in Bharatanatyam or Kathak.
- Your entry is a solo performance.
- You can arrange your own costume and accompanists at your own cost.
You cannot participate, or are not eligible, if:
- You are below 12 or above 20 years of age.
- You are not a local student, the competition is limited to local students by its own terms.
- Your entry is a group or duet performance. Only solo dance is considered.
- Your discipline is a classical form other than Bharatanatyam or Kathak. Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam and other forms are not covered by this particular scheme.
- You expect the Academy to provide costumes or accompanists, which it does not under this scheme.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Prescribed application form | Yes | Supplied free of charge by Kala Academy |
| Proof of age | Yes | Birth certificate or school leaving certificate for the 12 to 20 band |
| Proof of being a local student | Yes | School or college bonafide certificate |
| Passport size photograph | No | Where the form requires it, signed across |
The document set is short because the substance of the entry is the performance itself. What the Academy checks on paper is only that the participant is a local student of the right age.
How to apply for the All Goa Classical Dance Competition
- Request the prescribed format of the application form free of charge from Kala Academy, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji, Goa. Applications in the prescribed format are also invited through the local newspapers, so watch for the announcement.
- Fill in all the mandatory fields of the form, paste the passport-size photograph and sign it across where the form asks for it, and state the discipline, Bharatanatyam or Kathak; clearly.
- Attach self-attested copies of all mandatory documents, in particular the proof of age establishing the 12 to 20 band and the school or college bonafide certificate.
- Submit the duly filled and signed application form with the documents, within the prescribed period, to the Member Secretary, Kala Academy, Goa.
- Arrange your costume and accompanists for the performance date, and keep a copy of the submitted form and any acknowledgement issued.
How is the competition judged and paid out?
Entries are assessed on the performance itself, in a single solo category per discipline. The prize money is fixed; Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 for the top three places, with five consolation prizes of Rs 500 each β so the Academy is able to recognise eight performances in total per cycle beyond the travel support.
The Rs 500 travel lump sum is paid per participant and covers one accompanist travelling with the dancer. Since accompanists for Bharatanatyam and Kathak are usually essential rather than optional, this is a practical provision rather than a formality.
What conditions should a participant plan around?
- Solo only. Design the piece as a solo from the start; a choreography built for a group cannot be entered.
- Costumes at own cost. Budget for the aharya separately, the Academy does not reimburse it.
- Accompanists at own cost. Only the travel of one accompanist is supported through the Rs 500 lump sum.
- Within the prescribed period. Applications must be submitted within the period prescribed in the announcement, so a late entry has no route back in.
- Age on the date of the competition. Verify that the participant is still within 12 to 20 years on the competition date, not merely on the date of the form.

A note on the depth of this guide
All Goa Classical Dance Competition is a genuinely small Tier 3 scheme. Its published framework is compact, who may enter, which two disciplines, the age band, the solo rule, who pays for costumes and accompanists, the prize table and the travel allowance, where the form comes from and who hears grievances. This guide sets out that framework in full and does not invent detail around it. Kala Academy publishes the announcement each year through the local newspapers, and the exact dates for a given cycle should be confirmed with the Academy's Campal office.
How to check your application status
The All Goa Classical Dance Competition is run entirely offline, on a paper form submitted to the Member Secretary, Kala Academy, Goa, so there is no online portal login or SMS tracking system to check progress. An applicant has to follow up directly with the Academy instead:
- Keep your acknowledgement. When you submit the form at Kala Academy, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Campal, Panaji, ask for and retain a receiving stamp, a signed acknowledgement, or a copy of the form with the office's inward number, if one is given. This is the only proof of submission you will have.
- Call the Academy office directly on 0832-2420450, 0832-2420451, 0832-2420452 or 0832-2420453 during administrative office hours, Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. (closed Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays), and quote your name, discipline and the date you submitted the form.
- Email the Academy at kalaacademygoa@yahoo.co.in if a phone call is not convenient, referencing the same details, and ask for confirmation that your entry has been received and accepted for the competition.
- Watch the local newspapers for the follow-up announcement. Because the invitation to apply is itself published through local newspapers each year, the schedule, venue and date for the competition are usually announced the same way once entries close; this is the practical way most participants learn whether their entry has gone through to the performance stage.
- Visit in person at the Campal Trade Centre office if you are in Panaji and want written confirmation, since there is no digital dashboard that shows "under review", "selected" or "rejected" status the way a portal-based scheme would.
There is no separate application ID or tracking number issued for this scheme, so the acknowledgement copy and the office's own records are what settle any dispute about whether an entry was received in time.
Common reasons for rejection
Because the scheme has only a handful of eligibility conditions, most rejections trace back to one of the following, rather than to any complex documentation failure:
- Age outside the 12 to 20 band on the competition date. A participant who was 12 to 20 when filling the form but turns 21, or has not yet turned 12, by the actual date of the competition is not eligible. The fix is to check the age against the announced competition date, not the form submission date, before applying.
- Entry is a group or duet performance. Only solo dance is considered under this scheme; a piece choreographed for two or more dancers cannot be entered. The fix is to prepare the performance as a solo item from the start, since a group choreography cannot be reworked into a solo at the last stage.
- Discipline is not Bharatanatyam or Kathak. Entries in Odissi, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam or any other classical form are outside the scope of this particular competition. A dancer trained in another classical style should look for the relevant Kala Academy activity for that form instead of applying here.
- Not a local student. The competition is restricted to local students by its own terms, so an application without a valid school or college bonafide certificate establishing local student status is liable to be turned down.
- Missing or unclear proof of age. A birth certificate or school leaving certificate that does not clearly establish the applicant falls in the 12 to 20 band, or is omitted altogether, weakens the application. Attach a clear, self-attested copy rather than leaving the age field to speak for itself.
- Application submitted after the prescribed period. Since applications are invited only during the window announced through local newspapers, a form submitted after that window closes has no route back in for that year's cycle. The fix is to apply as soon as the announcement appears rather than waiting.
- Incomplete form. A form with mandatory fields left blank, an unsigned declaration, or a missing photograph where the form calls for one, can be sent back or set aside. Filling every mandatory field and signing across the photograph before submission avoids this.
None of these are fee-related or income-related, since the scheme has no financial eligibility test; the checks are limited to age, locality, discipline and the solo format, so a careful reading of those four points before filling the form prevents most rejections.
