Assistance for Area Expansion of Vegetable Crops through Hybrid Seed is a horticulture component of the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat, implemented by the Directorate of Horticulture and delivered through the state's iKhedut farmer portal. The component shares the cost of certified hybrid vegetable seed so that farmers can bring additional area under vegetable crops.

Vegetables are the highest-return, highest-risk part of a Gujarat farm. Hybrid seed costs several times what farm-saved or open-pollinated seed costs, and that up-front price is the single barrier that keeps small farmers on low-yielding material. According to the Directorate of Horticulture, the state's area expansion components exist precisely to close that gap in the first season, after which the higher yield is expected to sustain the switch.

What the component does

• Pays a share of the price of certified hybrid vegetable seed for a newly sown area.
• Pushes farmers towards licensed seed dealers and certified lots, which improves germination and reduces spurious-seed losses.
• Supports area expansion: bringing new land under vegetables; rather than simply subsidising a crop already being grown.
• Pays through Direct Benefit Transfer into the farmer's own account.

The component sits within Gujarat's wider horticulture programme, which also carries area expansion for fruit crops, protected cultivation, post-harvest infrastructure and mechanisation. All of them are applied for through the same iKhedut window.

How much money does the scheme give?

Gujarat's horticulture components follow the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) cost norms. Under those norms, hybrid vegetable seed assistance is 40 per cent of the cost, with a maximum of 2 hectares per beneficiary.

Three cautions matter more than the headline rate:

1. The rupee ceiling per hectare is re-notified with the annual component list. The figure that governs your claim is the one displayed in the component you actually applied under on iKhedut, not last year's number.
2. The subsidy is a share of actual cost. If your seed bill is lower than the notional cost, the released amount is lower too.
3. The 2-hectare ceiling is per beneficiary, not per plot. A farmer sowing five hectares of hybrid tomato still draws assistance on two.

Who is eligible for the hybrid vegetable seed assistance?

You can apply if:

• You are a resident of Gujarat and an active farmer.
• You hold cultivable land in your own name, evidenced by 7/12 and 8-A records for the plot to be sown.
• You are sowing a notified hybrid vegetable crop from certified seed bought from a licensed dealer.
• You have a bank account in your own name for the DBT credit.
• You apply within the notified iKhedut window and before buying the seed.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not own or lawfully hold the land. Agricultural labourers and unrecorded tenants are not eligible to claim in their own name.
• The 7/12 and 8-A do not carry your name and no consent letter (sammati patrak) from the recorded holders is filed.
• You have already drawn assistance for 2 hectares under this component.
• You use farm-saved, uncertified or unbilled seed, or the bill is in someone else's name.
• You sowed before the sanction was issued and cannot show a pre-approval.

How to apply on iKhedut

1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in, go to the Schemes section and choose Horticulture schemes (bagayati yojanao).
2. Locate the component for area expansion of vegetable crops through hybrid seed and click Apply. Indicate whether you are already a registered farmer on iKhedut; if not, register with your details and set a password through OTP verification.
3. Fill the application; survey number, area in hectares, crop and variety, bank account details and Aadhaar number: then submit it.
4. Confirm the application. An unconfirmed application is not treated as filed at all, and this single step is where most farmers lose their claim.
5. Print the confirmed application, sign it, and attach self-attested copies of the 7/12, 8-A, Aadhaar, bank passbook and, where relevant, the caste certificate.
6. Submit the signed printout with documents at your taluka or district horticulture office within the days stated on the acknowledgement, and keep the receipt.
7. Wait for the pre-sanction (purva manjuri). Buy the certified seed only after it is issued, then file the claim with the original bill.

How to apply offline

1. Visit the taluka agriculture or horticulture office, or a Village Computer Entrepreneur / Gram Panchayat e-Gram centre, and ask them to file the iKhedut application for you.
2. Carry Aadhaar, the 7/12 and 8-A extracts, your bank passbook and your mobile phone for the OTP.
3. Collect the printed application, sign it, and submit it with the document set at the horticulture office counter. Keep the stamped acknowledgement.

Even this route ends in an iKhedut record. Gujarat does not run a parallel paper-only sanction for horticulture components.

How to check your application status

1. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and select Application status (arji ni sthiti).
2. Enter your application number with the registered mobile number or Aadhaar number, then submit.
3. The screen shows whether the application is confirmed, whether the office has received the physical copy, and whether pre-sanction has been issued.
4. After field verification, check your bank statement. If no credit appears weeks later, ask the district horticulture office for the DBT release date.

Why claims get rejected

• Application not confirmed on iKhedut, so it never reached the office.
• Physical copy not submitted in time with the required documents.
• Name mismatch across Aadhaar, bank account and the 7/12 record.
• Seed bought before sanction, making the claim post-facto.
• Uncertified seed or an invalid bill — no lot number, unlicensed dealer, or a bill in a relative's name.
• Area claimed exceeds 2 hectares or exceeds the area in the land record.
• District target exhausted, in which case a valid application is held pending rather than sanctioned.
