What is the raw and ripe mandap assistance scheme?

Assistance for Planting Vegetable Crops for Raw and Ripe Mandap is a horticulture subsidy introduced by the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat, and delivered through the Directorate of Horticulture. The scheme pays part of the cost of building a vegetable trellis. A mandap, out of wooden or bamboo poles strung with GI or plastic wire, on which vegetable crops are trained to grow upward instead of sprawling on the ground.

The agronomy behind the subsidy is simple and well established. A vine vegetable left on the ground loses fruit to rot, pests and trampling, and the crop is harder to spray and pick. Lifting the vine onto a mandap raises marketable yield, improves fruit shape and colour, cuts fungal loss, and lets a picker walk the rows without damaging the plant. The structure costs money the small farmer does not have at planting time, which is the gap this scheme closes.

The scheme recognises three grades of structure, raw, semi-ripe and ripe, with different unit costs and different ceilings. Farmers in Gujarat commonly call these kaccha mandap and pakka mandap.

Key features

  • Raw mandap for tomato, chilli and other vegetables: 50 per cent up to Rs 26,000 per hectare for general farmers, 75 per cent up to Rs 39,000 per hectare for SC and ST farmers.
  • Semi-ripe mandap for vine vegetables: 50 per cent up to Rs 40,000 per hectare for general farmers, 75 per cent up to Rs 60,000 per hectare for SC and ST farmers.
  • Ripe mandap for vine vegetables: 50 per cent up to Rs 80,000 per hectare for general farmers, 75 per cent up to Rs 1,20,000 per hectare for SC and ST farmers.
  • Maximum 2 hectares per farmer account.
  • Construction norm of 1,600 wooden or bamboo poles per hectare and 400 kg of GI wire, 12 to 18 gauge, or plastic wire.
  • Recommended spacing of 2.50 by 2.50 metres.
  • No income limit, for the individual or the family.
  • Applications only on the iKhedut portal.

Who is eligible for the vegetable mandap subsidy?

A farmer qualifies when all of these are true:

  • The applicant is a farmer.
  • The applicant resides in Gujarat.
  • The applicant holds agricultural land, evidenced by a 7/12 land record.
  • The applicant intends to build a raw, semi-ripe or ripe mandap for vegetable cultivation on that land.
  • The applicant has a bank account capable of receiving a direct benefit transfer.
  • The area claimed is within 2 hectares per account.

Farmers of all categories are eligible. The category affects only the rate: 50 per cent for general farmers, 75 per cent for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers.

Who cannot apply or are not eligible

  • A resident of another state cannot apply, even where the land being farmed is leased in Gujarat.
  • A person who is not a farmer and holds no agricultural land cannot apply, since the 7/12 record is a mandatory document and the subsidy is calculated per hectare.
  • A farmer cannot claim beyond 2 hectares in one account. Area above the limit is not assisted.
  • A general-category farmer cannot claim the 75 per cent rate; the higher rate belongs to SC and ST farmers and requires a caste certificate.
  • A farmer building a structure that departs materially from the norms: far fewer poles, thinner wire than 18 gauge, spacing that does not match the approved layout, risks failing verification even after approval.
  • A farmer applying outside an open iKhedut window will not find the component on the portal menu at all.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
7/12 land record Yes Establishes landholding and the area claimed
Aadhaar card Yes Identity and DBT seeding
Bank passbook or cancelled cheque Yes Name and IFSC must match the application
Caste certificate If claiming 75 per cent Only for SC and ST farmers
Ration card If asked Family and residence proof
Purchase bills for poles and wire At verification Establish actual cost against the unit cost norm

The 7/12 extract should be recent. An extract that still shows a deceased predecessor's name, or that has not caught up with a partition, is a routine cause of a stalled file at the taluka level.

How to apply for the mandap subsidy on iKhedut

  1. Open the official portal at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in, select Schemes, then select Agricultural Schemes.
  2. Find Assistance for Planting Vegetable Crops for Raw and Ripe Mandap in the list and select Apply. The application page opens.
  3. Select "Apply New" and complete the form with your personal details, village and taluka, survey number and area, category, and bank account number with IFSC. State which grade of mandap, raw, semi-ripe or ripe — you intend to build.
  4. Use "Update Application" to correct any entry before confirming.
  5. Confirm the application. Confirmation is a separate step from saving, and an unconfirmed application is not treated as filed.
  6. Take a printout of the confirmed application, sign it, attach self-attested copies of the 7/12, Aadhaar and bank passbook, and submit the set to the concerned agriculture or horticulture office.
  7. Track the file through the Applicant Corner at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in/public/frm_Applicant_Corner.aspx, where applications can also be viewed, printed and have documents uploaded against them.

How to apply if you cannot use the portal

  1. Visit a Village Computer Entrepreneur at the Gram Panchayat or a Common Service Centre with your 7/12, Aadhaar and bank passbook. iKhedut has no paper-first route.
  2. Have the operator complete and confirm the application in your presence, and collect the printout showing the application number before you leave.
  3. Submit the signed printout with documents at the taluka agriculture office or the district horticulture office, and take a stamped receipt.

How is the assistance paid?

The subsidy is paid by direct benefit transfer into the farmer's bank account after the mandap has been built and physically verified against the scheme's norms. It is a reimbursement of part of the cost, not an advance for materials, so the farmer funds the poles and wire first.

The per-hectare ceilings bite in practice. A general farmer building a ripe mandap over one hectare at a cost of Rs 1,80,000 receives Rs 80,000. The ceiling; not 50 per cent of Rs 1,80,000. An SC farmer building the same structure receives Rs 1,20,000. Spending above the unit cost norm does not increase the assistance.

Waiting for sanction before spending is the safer sequence. A structure built before the application is approved cannot easily be linked to the sanctioned file at verification.

How do I check my mandap application status?

  1. Open the Applicant Corner on ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in.
  2. Enter your application number with the registered mobile number or date of birth as prompted.
  3. Read the status; saved, confirmed, pending at taluka, approved, or rejected with a reason, and upload any document the officer has asked for.

An application that shows as saved rather than confirmed will not move. The only remedy is to file again in the next open window.

Why do mandap subsidy applications get rejected?

  • Application not confirmed after submission, the commonest iKhedut failure.
  • 7/12 record not matching the applicant, a name discrepancy, an unregistered partition, or land in a relative's name.
  • Area claimed above 2 hectares in a single account.
  • 75 per cent rate claimed without a caste certificate.
  • Bank details mismatched with Aadhaar, which stops the direct benefit transfer even after approval.
  • Structure not matching the norms at verification, fewer than 1,600 poles per hectare, wire outside the 12 to 18 gauge range, or spacing far from 2.50 by 2.50 metres.
  • Physical copy not submitted to the agriculture office after online confirmation.
  • Budget exhausted for the component in that financial year, a rejection unrelated to the applicant's merits. Reapply in the next window.

Where do I raise a grievance?

  • Taluka agriculture office or district horticulture office is the first stop, because the physical file and the field verification sit there.
  • Deputy Director of Horticulture at the district level handles escalations against the taluka office.
  • Directorate of Horticulture, Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department is the state-level authority for this component.
  • iKhedut contact page, at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in/Public/frm_Public_Contacts.aspx, lists the official contact points for portal and scheme queries.

Applying on iKhedut is free. No agent can guarantee sanction of a mandap application, and no officer is entitled to a payment for verifying a trellis. The decision rests on the land record, the category, the area and the structure actually built.

Frequently asked questions

How much assistance does the mandap scheme give?

A general farmer gets 50 per cent of the cost and an SC or ST farmer gets 75 per cent. The ceilings differ by mandap type — Rs 26,000 and Rs 39,000 per hectare for a raw mandap, Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000 for a semi-ripe mandap, and Rs 80,000 and Rs 1,20,000 for a ripe mandap.

What is the maximum area I can claim for?

Assistance is limited to 2 hectares per farmer account. A farmer building a trellis over a larger area receives assistance only on the first 2 hectares and funds the remainder unaided.

What is the difference between a raw, semi-ripe and ripe mandap?

A raw mandap is the lightest structure, used for tomato, chilli and similar vegetables, while semi-ripe and ripe mandaps are progressively sturdier structures used for vine vegetables. The ripe mandap costs and earns the most because it is built to last several seasons.

What materials must I use?

The scheme's norm is 1,600 wooden or bamboo poles per hectare and 400 kg of GI wire of 12 to 18 gauge, or plastic wire, with a recommended spacing of about 2.50 by 2.50 metres. Structures built outside these norms may not pass verification.

Is there an income limit to apply?

No income limit applies to this scheme, for either the individual or the family. The eligibility test is that the applicant is a farmer residing in Gujarat with agricultural land.

Can farmers of all categories apply?

Yes. General, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers can all apply; only the subsidy rate differs, at 50 per cent for general farmers and 75 per cent for SC and ST farmers.

Where do I apply for the mandap subsidy?

Apply on the iKhedut portal at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in under Agricultural Schemes, then confirm the application and take a printout for submission to the concerned agriculture office.

How do I check my application status?

Use the Applicant Corner on the iKhedut portal, at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in/public/frm_Applicant_Corner.aspx, where you can view, print and upload application details using your application number.
