What is the Merit Scholarship Scheme for Class X and XII in Manipur?

The Merit Scholarship Scheme for Students of Class X and XII is a state scholarship of the Directorate of Education (Schools), Government of Manipur. It rewards the top scorers of the two board examinations held in the state, the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM) and the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur (COHSEM).

The scheme is not an application-for-all scholarship. The Directorate first obtains the merit lists furnished by BOSEM and COHSEM, publishes the names as Annexure I for Class X passed students and Annexure II for Class XII passed students on manipureducation.gov.in, and then invites those named students to apply on the National Scholarship Portal.

Money is paid annually so long as the student stays in education. A Class X scholar draws the amount for two years and a Class XII scholar for three, and both conditions are the same: do not fail, do not discontinue.

Key features

  • Purely merit-based, decided on board examination performance.
  • Two separate streams with different amounts and different durations.
  • Applied for and renewed on the National Scholarship Portal.
  • Administered by the Science Unit of the Directorate of Education (S) at Lamphelpat, Imphal West.

Who is eligible for the Manipur Merit Scholarship for Class X and XII?

Eligibility is fixed each year by notification. The notification dated May 2026, numbered 5/3/19-DE(S), set out the 2026 position:

Examination Board Amount per student per annum Eligible rank or score Students to be selected
HSLC 2026 BOSEM Rs 6,000 CGPA range 8.83 and above 300
HSSLC 2026, Science COHSEM Rs 12,000 Ranks 1 to 303 125
HSSLC 2026, Arts COHSEM Rs 12,000 Ranks 1 to 307 125
HSSLC 2026, Commerce COHSEM Rs 12,000 Ranks 1 to 202 50

You can apply if:

  • You passed the HSLC examination conducted by BOSEM in the notified year and your CGPA falls in the range announced for that year to 8.83 and above for 2026.
  • Or you passed the HSSLC examination conducted by COHSEM in the notified year and your rank falls within the range announced for your stream.
  • Your name appears in Annexure I or Annexure II published by the Directorate of Education (S).
  • You have continued into further study and can show an admission receipt.

You cannot apply if:

  • Your name is not in the annexure for the year. The lists come from the board merit lists and the Directorate does not add names on request.
  • You passed the qualifying examination in an earlier year than the one notified. Each year's notification is tied to that year's HSLC and HSSLC results.
  • You have discontinued your studies, since continuation is the condition on which the annual instalment rests.
  • You missed the NSP window. The scheme has hard opening and closing dates and there is no offline substitute.

Note that the rank range published is wider than the number of selections, for 2026, ranks 1 to 303 in Science produced 125 selections. That is because ties, refusals, ineligible cases and students who already hold another scholarship are worked through before the final list is settled.

How much does the scheme pay?

  • Class X passouts: Rs 6,000 per annum for 2 years, a total of Rs 12,000.
  • Class XII passouts: Rs 12,000 per annum for 3 years, a total of Rs 36,000.

Both are conditional on the student not failing and not discontinuing studies. The scholarship is paid into the student's own bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer, which is why the Directorate has in past years issued a separate notification extending the last date for submission of bank details.

  1. Check the annexure. Go to manipureducation.gov.in, open the Merit Scholarship Scheme notification for your year, and download Annexure I if you passed Class X or Annexure II if you passed Class XII. Confirm your name, roll number and stream.
  2. Note the timeline. For the 2026 round, online registration opened on 25 May 2026 and closed on 31 August 2026.
  3. Open scholarships.gov.in and register as a student. Fresh applicants create a new registration; renewal applicants log in with their existing application ID and date of birth.
  4. Select the Merit Scholarship Scheme of the Government of Manipur from the scheme list, and fill in the personal, academic and bank details exactly as they appear on your documents.
  5. Upload the scanned documents listed above and submit the form. Save the application ID that the portal generates — you need it for renewal and status checks.
  6. Follow the verification. Institute-level verification closed on 15 September 2026 and state-level verification on 25 September 2026 in the 2026 round. Chase your school or college nodal officer if your application is still showing as pending at level 1 close to the deadline.

How to check your status and get your money

  1. Log in to scholarships.gov.in with your application ID and password.
  2. Open Check Your Status to see whether the application is pending at institute level, pending at state level, verified or rejected.
  3. If your bank details were entered wrongly, watch manipureducation.gov.in for a notification extending the last date for submission of bank details, the Directorate has issued one before.
  4. Renewal applications must be filed each year of the two- or three-year period. The 2026 notification explicitly covers renewal cases alongside fresh ones.

Why applications get rejected

  • Name not in Annexure I or II for the year you are applying in.
  • Applying after the closing date. No condonation is offered.
  • Bank account not in the student's own name, or an account that has gone dormant.
  • Mismatch between the name on Aadhaar, the marksheet and the bank account.
  • Application left unverified at institute level because the school or college nodal officer was never approached.
  • Studies discontinued, which breaks the continuation condition.
  • Already drawing another scholarship for the same course, which is flagged when the final list is settled.
