Pragati Scholarship Scheme for Girl Students, Nagaland
Nagaland state government scheme
Pragati Scholarship Scheme pays Rs 50,000 a year to girl students of Nagaland in AICTE-approved technical courses: up to 3 years for a diploma and up to 4 years for a degree, where family income is under Rs 8 lakh and no more than two girls per household claim it. Applications are made at scholarships.gov.in.
What is the Pragati Scholarship in Nagaland?
Pragati Scholarship Scheme for Girl Students is a scholarship of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) aimed at girls in technical education, and it is listed by the Directorate of Technical Education, Nagaland among the scholarships available to students of the state. The Nagaland Scholarship Nodal Cell, which coordinates 23 scholarship programmes for the state, explicitly lists "Pragati Scholarships for girls in technical courses (AICTE)" among the central schemes it handles.
According to the Directorate of Technical Education's scholarships page, Pragati pays Rs 50,000 per annum for every year of study, covering tuition fees, computers, books and equipment, and applications are routed through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in rather than through the state's own Common Scholarship Portal.
The purpose of the scheme is straightforward: girls remain under-represented in engineering and polytechnic education, and a fixed Rs 50,000 a year removes the single most common reason a family withdraws a daughter from a technical course. The recurring cost of fees, a laptop and lab equipment.
Key features
- Fixed award of Rs 50,000 a year, not a variable rate.
- Two tiers; diploma level and degree level, with the same money and the same income ceiling.
- Maximum two girls per household.
- Family income ceiling of Rs 8 lakh a year.
- Covers fees, computers, books and equipment; excludes hostel charges and medical charges.
Who is eligible for the Pragati Scholarship?
Diploma level, you can apply if:
- You are a girl student admitted to the first year of an AICTE-approved diploma programme, or to the second year by lateral entry.
- Your family income does not exceed Rs 8 lakh a year.
- No more than two girls in your household are claiming this scholarship.
Degree level. You can apply if:
- You are a girl student admitted to the first year of an AICTE-approved degree course, or to the second year by lateral entry.
- The same Rs 8 lakh family income ceiling and the same two girls per household cap apply.
You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:
- You are a male student. Pragati is restricted to girl students; the AICTE scheme for students with disabilities is Saksham and a boy in a technical course in Nagaland should look at the State Technical Scholarship instead.
- Your family income is above Rs 8 lakh a year from all sources.
- Two girls in your household already hold the Pragati Scholarship.
- Your institution or course is not AICTE-approved. This is the condition most often missed, a private college running a technical-sounding programme without AICTE approval does not qualify its students.
- You are applying mid-course, for example in the third year of a degree. Entry is at first year or at second year by lateral entry only.
How much does the Pragati Scholarship pay?
| Level | Amount per year | Maximum duration | Maximum total |
|---|---|---|---|
| AICTE-approved diploma | Rs 50,000 | 3 years | Rs 1,50,000 |
| AICTE-approved degree (regular admission) | Rs 50,000 | 4 years | Rs 2,00,000 |
The Directorate of Technical Education states the amount as "Rs 50,000 per annum for every year of study i.e. maximum 3 years" at diploma level and "maximum 4 years" for regular degree admissions. A lateral-entry student naturally draws it for the remaining years of the course rather than the full term.
What the money can be used for: fees, computers, books and equipment.
What it does not cover: hostel charges and medical charges. Both are expressly excluded at diploma and degree level alike. A hosteller should budget separately for accommodation.

How does Pragati compare with Nagaland's own scholarships?
A girl student in a Nagaland polytechnic or engineering college usually has more than one option, and the schemes cannot be held together, every Nagaland state scholarship guideline bars an applicant who is already a beneficiary of another scholarship scheme. Comparing the money before applying is therefore worth a few minutes.
| Scheme | Amount | Run by | Applied on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pragati Scholarship | Rs 50,000 a year | AICTE | scholarships.gov.in |
| Post Matric Scholarship to ST Students, Nagaland (Group I professional, hosteller) | Up to Rs 27,000 a year | Directorate of Higher Education | scholarships.gov.in |
| Post Matric Scholarship to ST Students, Nagaland (Group III, polytechnic diploma, hosteller) | Up to Rs 13,700 a year | Directorate of Higher Education | scholarships.gov.in |
| Nagaland State Merit Scholarship (technical or professional course, hosteller) | Rs 15,100 to Rs 22,900 a year | Directorate of Higher Education | scholarship.nagaland.gov.in |
| State Technical Scholarship for ST students | Rate not published | Directorate of Technical Education | scholarship.nagaland.gov.in |
On the published figures, Pragati pays more than any of the Nagaland state alternatives for a girl in an AICTE-approved course: Rs 50,000 against a best case of Rs 27,000. The trade-off is the eligibility gate: Pragati applies a hard Rs 8 lakh family income ceiling and a two-girls-per-household cap, while the State Merit Scholarship applies no income test at all but demands 70 to 80 percent marks. A high-scoring girl from a family above the Rs 8 lakh line may therefore find the State Merit Scholarship is the only door open to her, and a girl with modest marks from a low-income family the reverse.
Applications for the Post Matric Scholarship for ST students of Nagaland ran from 1 July to 30 September 2026 on the National Scholarship Portal for the 2026-27 session, while the State Merit and Research Scholarships ran from 1 August to 31 October 2026 on the state portal. Check which windows are open before deciding.
Why Pragati applications get rejected
- Institution not AICTE-approved, so the course itself is outside the scheme.
- Family income above Rs 8 lakh, or an income certificate issued by an authority not competent to issue it.
- Third girl from the same household applying against a cap of two.
- Institute verification not completed on the National Scholarship Portal before the window closed.
- Bank account not in the student's own name or not Aadhaar-seeded, which stops the transfer even after sanction.
- Applying mid-course rather than at first year or lateral-entry second year.
Help and grievance redressal
- Directorate of Technical Education, Nagaland, scholarship notices at dte.nagaland.gov.in, under the Department of Higher & Technical Education.
- Nagaland Scholarship Nodal Cell, Directorate of Higher Education, Below New Secretariat Complex, Kohima 797001 to 9612520569.
- National Scholarship Portal; scholarships.gov.in carries the AICTE scheme guidelines, the application window and the grievance module for Pragati.
Applying is free. No agent can charge a fee to register a Pragati application on the National Scholarship Portal, and the institute's verification cannot be bought.
How to check your Pragati Scholarship application status
Pragati runs entirely on the National Scholarship Portal, so status tracking happens there, not on any Nagaland state portal, and not by visiting the Directorate of Technical Education in person.
- Go to scholarships.gov.in and log in with the application ID and password you set at registration, not your Aadhaar number.
- Open "Application Status" or "Track Status" on the applicant dashboard. The portal shows one of a small set of stages for a Pragati application:
- Institute Verification Pending, meaning your college has not yet signed off on the application. Nothing moves until this step clears.
- Institute Verified, meaning the college has checked your admission and course details and passed the application upward.
- Under Process at State/DNO level, meaning the state nodal department is reviewing eligibility, including the income ceiling and the two-girls-per-household cap.
- Sanctioned, meaning the award has been approved and is queued for payment.
- Disbursed, meaning the amount has been credited to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account, usually visible on the portal a few days before the money actually lands.
- If the status has stayed at "Institute Verification Pending" for more than a few weeks, the fastest fix is to contact your college's nodal officer directly. The portal itself has no way to force a verification.
- If the status is stuck after institute verification, for longer than the state usually takes to process a batch, call the Nagaland Scholarship Nodal Cell, Directorate of Higher Education, at 9612520569 and quote your application ID. This is the same helpline that handles Pragati queries alongside the state's own scholarship schemes.
- Watch the scholarships page at dte.nagaland.gov.in for any notice about a batch of Pragati applications being processed or a fresh document requirement, since the Directorate of Technical Education posts scheme updates there rather than emailing individual applicants.
- Keep a screenshot of each status change. If a disbursement does not arrive within a reasonable time of the portal showing "Sanctioned," that screenshot is what the helpline or your institute will ask for first.
There is no SMS-based status check for Pragati and no separate Nagaland tracking number distinct from the application ID issued by the National Scholarship Portal at registration.
