NPS Vatsalya: Why Account Registration Gets Rejected and How to Fix It
An NPS Vatsalya registration is rejected far more often for KYC and document errors than for eligibility. Because NPS Vatsalya is a PFRDA-regulated pension account that a guardian opens for a child below 18 to not a welfare benefit that is granted or denied on merit. A rejection almost always means a form or a document did not pass verification. Each cause below has a specific fix, and most let you simply resubmit.
The one-line reminder
NPS Vatsalya lets a parent or legal guardian open a pension account for an Indian minor below 18 with a minimum of Rs 1,000 a year, run through a Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA). The reasons below are about registration failing, not about who qualifies.
Reason 1, The subscriber is not actually eligible
The subscriber must be an Indian minor below 18, and the account must be operated by a parent or legal guardian. Applications for an adult, or by someone who is neither parent nor legal guardian, are correctly refused.
- Fix: if the intended holder is 18 or above, open a regular NPS Tier-I account under the All Citizen Model instead. If you are not the parent, only a legal guardian can operate the account.
Reason 2 to Proof of the minor's date of birth is missing or unreadable
Date-of-birth proof is the foundational document. A blurred scan, a mismatched name, or a document type that is not accepted will stop registration.
- Fix: upload a clear birth certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN or passport of the minor, with the name matching the rest of the form.
Reason 3 to Guardian KYC fails
The guardian's KYC must clear with valid identity and address proof. A PAN-name mismatch, an outdated address proof, or a failed Aadhaar OTP is a common rejection cause.
- Fix: ensure the guardian's PAN and Aadhaar details match exactly. For online registration, complete the Aadhaar-based OTP KYC; for offline, submit self-attested identity and address proof at the Point of Presence (PoP).
Reason 4 — Bank account problem
Contributions are made from the guardian's bank account. Wrong account details, or an account whose name does not match the guardian, can block the initial contribution and leave registration incomplete.
- Fix: enter the guardian's own, active bank account with a correct IFSC, and make sure the initial contribution of at least Rs 1,000 clears.
Reason 5 to Initial contribution not completed
Registration is not finished until the minimum contribution is paid and the e-signature or OTP verification is done. An abandoned payment leaves the application stuck rather than approved.
- Fix: complete the Rs 1,000 payment and finish the e-sign / OTP step so the PRAN can be generated.
Reason 6 to Duplicate or existing PRAN
A minor can hold only one NPS Vatsalya account. Attempting a second registration for the same child will be flagged.
- Fix: use the "Know Your PRAN" utility on the CRA site to recover the existing PRAN rather than opening a new account.
How to fix a stalled or rejected registration
- Track the application on the CRA's utility using your acknowledgement number; status such as Under Process or a rejection reason tells you what is wrong.
- Contact the PoP or CRA (Protean, KFintech or CAMS) that processed the form to learn the exact document at fault.
- Correct and resubmit the specific document or detail; most KYC rejections are curable on resubmission.
- For unresolved cases, escalate to PFRDA, the regulator, after the PoP and CRA.
A short FAQ
Can NPS Vatsalya reject me for low income? No. There is no income, caste or domicile test, only the age of the minor, the guardian relationship, and valid KYC and documents.
Was I "rejected" or just incomplete? Often the latter. An unpaid initial contribution or an unfinished e-sign leaves the application incomplete rather than rejected; finishing those steps usually clears it.
Who do I call? The NPS Trust / CRA toll-free helpline is 1800-110-708; the PoP branch where you applied can resolve KYC, contribution and document problems directly.
