NPS Vatsalya: How to Check Application and Account Status

NPS Vatsalya: How to Check Application and Account Status
An NPS Vatsalya status check has two stages: first confirming that registration succeeded and a PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) was generated for the child, then tracking contributions and fund value inside that account. Because NPS Vatsalya is a market-linked pension account rather than a welfare payout, there is no "payment" arriving to you. The guardian checks that money paid in is credited and invested correctly.
The one-line reminder
NPS Vatsalya is a pension account a guardian opens for a child below 18 with a minimum of Rs 1,000 a year, regulated by PFRDA and run through a Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA). Everything below is about tracking that account, not about eligibility or benefits.
What "status" means here
Because the guardian opens the account, the status you check is the registration status and then the account status. The key milestone is PRAN generation. On the CRA application-tracking page, the status typically moves through stages such as Documents Received, Under Process and PRAN Generated, as Protean's guidance describes. Once the PRAN exists, status becomes an ongoing matter of contributions and Net Asset Value.
Step 1 to Track the registration until the PRAN is generated
- Note the acknowledgement or receipt number given when you submitted the NPS Vatsalya registration on eNPS or at a Point of Presence (PoP).
- Open the CRA's application-tracking utility and enter that number to see the current stage: Documents Received, Under Process or PRAN Generated.
- If the status stalls at Under Process for long, contact the PoP branch or CRA that processed the form; a KYC or document issue usually explains it.
- When status shows PRAN Generated, record the PRAN: every future contribution, statement and withdrawal is keyed to it.
Step 2 to If you have lost or never noted the PRAN
Use the "Know Your PRAN" utility on the CRA website, which retrieves the PRAN against identifying details. Keep the minor's date-of-birth proof and the guardian's PAN handy for verification.
Step 3 to Log in and check contributions and value
- Log in to the CRA portal or the eNPS platform using the PRAN and password.
- Open the Transaction Statement to see each contribution credited and the current Net Asset Value of the holdings.
- Reconcile the credits against what you actually paid. A contribution can take a couple of working days to reflect after the bank debit.
- Download the annual statement of transactions for a full record of contributions, returns and any partial withdrawals.
Step 4 — Check the position around key milestones
- After a contribution: confirm the amount appears in the Transaction Statement and the units bought reflect your chosen asset allocation.
- After a partial withdrawal: confirm the debit and the remaining balance; recall the cap is 25% of contributions excluding returns, after 3 years.
- As the child nears 18: the account status will require fresh KYC to continue under the All Citizen Model; watch for this so the account is not left in limbo.
What each situation means and what to do
- No PRAN after several days. The registration is still in process or a document was rejected. Contact the PoP or CRA that handled it.
- PRAN generated but no contribution showing. The initial payment may not have cleared, or was made from an unlinked account. Check the guardian's bank debit and retry the contribution.
- Value fell despite contributing; NPS Vatsalya is market-linked; Net Asset Value moves with the market. This is normal, not an error.
A short FAQ
Can I check NPS Vatsalya status online myself? Yes. Unlike many welfare schemes, the guardian has a genuine online login to the CRA or eNPS using the PRAN.
Which CRA do I log in to? The one you registered with, Protean, KFintech or CAMS. Use that CRA's own portal and its "Know Your PRAN" tool.
Is there a guaranteed return to track? No. There is no assured return, guaranteed pension or government matching contribution. You are tracking market-linked contributions and Net Asset Value only. For unresolved issues, the NPS Trust / CRA helpline is 1800-110-708.
