What is Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan?
Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a maternal-health programme of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It was launched on 9 June 2016 to bring assured, comprehensive and quality antenatal care to pregnant women across the country on a fixed day each month.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, PMSMA guarantees a minimum package of antenatal care services to every pregnant woman in her second and third trimesters on the 9th of every month at government health facilities. The core idea is simple: pick one predictable day, make specialist and diagnostic services available on that day, and ensure no pregnant woman misses at least one thorough check-up during her pregnancy.
PMSMA is not a cash transfer and not an insurance scheme. It is a service guarantee. There is no form to fill and no bank account to seed. A pregnant woman simply visits a participating government facility on the 9th and receives care free of charge.
Key objectives
- Ensure at least one assured, good-quality antenatal check-up for every pregnant woman in the second or third trimester.
- Detect and follow up high-risk pregnancies early so that complications are managed before delivery.
- Reduce maternal and infant deaths by improving the reach and quality of antenatal care.
- Draw in the private medical community to volunteer alongside government doctors.
Who is eligible for PMSMA?
You can avail PMSMA if:
- You are pregnant and in your second or third trimester: roughly the 4th month onwards.
- You can reach a participating government health facility on the 9th of the month (or the next working day if the 9th is a holiday).
PMSMA is universal. There is no income limit, no caste or category restriction, and no fee. Every pregnant woman in the eligible trimesters can walk in and be seen.
Who cannot use PMSMA as an individual application: because PMSMA is a walk-in service and not a benefit you apply for, there is nobody who is "rejected". However, the fixed-day package is designed for the second and third trimesters. Women in the very early first trimester are still registered and cared for through routine antenatal care, but the dedicated PMSMA check-up (including the specialist review and ultrasound) is focused on the later trimesters. There is no separate personal application and no cash payout; women looking for maternity cash benefits should instead look at schemes such as Janani Suraksha Yojana or Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
What services does PMSMA provide?
According to the programme guidelines, each PMSMA session offers a minimum package that typically includes:
- A clinical and obstetric examination by a doctor or specialist.
- Laboratory tests: haemoglobin, blood group, blood sugar, urine test, and tests such as HIV and syphilis (VDRL) as per protocol.
- An ultrasound where the facility has the equipment and a trained operator.
- Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) immunisation as due.
- Iron-folic acid and calcium supplements and, where needed, treatment for anaemia.
- Screening and marking of high-risk pregnancies for structured follow-up.
Women identified as high-risk, for example those with severe anaemia, pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes, or a previous complicated delivery — are flagged (commonly with a red sticker on the Mother and Child Protection card) and tracked to ensure a safe, institutional delivery.
Where is PMSMA available?
PMSMA is delivered at government health facilities, primary health centres (PHCs), community health centres (CHCs), urban primary health centres, sub- district and district hospitals, and medical college hospitals. The exact list of participating facilities varies by district; your local ANM (auxiliary nurse midwife) or ASHA worker can tell you the nearest PMSMA site.
How to apply for and access PMSMA services (step by step)
Because PMSMA needs no online application, the "process" is simply how to use the service on the day:
- Confirm your pregnancy and register for antenatal care at your nearest sub-centre, PHC or government hospital, and get your Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card.
- Note the 9th of the month. PMSMA check-ups are held on the 9th of every month; if that is a holiday, the session moves to the next working day.
- Visit the participating government facility on that day with your MCP card and any earlier reports. Your ASHA or ANM can guide you to the right centre.
- Get examined and tested, the doctor will do the clinical check, order the lab tests and ultrasound, and give supplements and immunisation as due.
- Follow the advice given. If you are marked high-risk, attend the follow-up visits and plan for delivery at the facility recommended.
How private doctors take part: "I Pledge for 9"
A distinctive feature of PMSMA is its appeal to the private medical community. Through the voluntary "I Pledge for 9" campaign, private obstetricians and gynaecologists are encouraged to volunteer a few hours on the 9th of each month to examine pregnant women at government facilities. This helps address the shortage of specialists in the public system, especially in smaller towns and rural blocks, and lets private doctors contribute directly to safe motherhood.
Private practitioners who wish to volunteer can register their interest through the PMSMA portal or approach the district health authorities.
Why PMSMA matters
India carries a large share of the world's maternal and newborn deaths, and many of these are preventable with timely antenatal care. By fixing a predictable day, assuring a specialist review and screening systematically for danger signs, PMSMA tries to make sure that risky pregnancies are caught early rather than discovered in an emergency. For a pregnant woman, the practical promise is straightforward: on the 9th of the month, a proper check-up is available for free at the nearest government facility.

Frequently asked questions
What is Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan?
Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a Ministry of Health and Family Welfare programme that guarantees free, quality antenatal care to pregnant women on the 9th of every month at government health facilities. Launched on 9 June 2016, it aims to give every pregnant woman at least one assured, comprehensive check-up in the second or third trimester by a doctor or specialist.
Who can get PMSMA check-ups?
Pregnant women in their second and third trimesters (roughly the 4th to 9th month) can avail free PMSMA check-ups. The programme is universal — every pregnant woman is eligible regardless of income, and there is no registration fee or means test.
On which day are PMSMA services provided?
PMSMA services are provided on the 9th of every month at government health facilities. If the 9th is a holiday, the camp is held on the next working day. Women simply walk in on that day; no prior appointment is needed.
Does PMSMA cost anything?
No. All PMSMA services — the doctor's examination, blood and urine tests, an ultrasound where available, tetanus immunisation and iron-folic acid and calcium supplements — are provided free of cost at government facilities.
How does PMSMA identify high-risk pregnancies?
Under PMSMA every woman is screened for danger signs such as severe anaemia, high blood pressure, diabetes and other complications. Women found to be high-risk are marked (commonly with a red sticker on the MCP card) and tracked for follow-up and safe, institutional delivery.
Do I need to apply or fill a form for PMSMA?
No application is required. PMSMA is a service delivered at government hospitals and health centres, not a cash scheme. Pregnant women only need to visit the nearest participating facility on the 9th of the month with their Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card.
Can private doctors take part in PMSMA?
Yes. Through the voluntary "I Pledge for 9" initiative, private sector obstetricians and gynaecologists are encouraged to donate time on the 9th of the month to examine pregnant women at government facilities, helping cover the shortage of specialists in the public system.
