AICTE Saksham Scholarship applications most often fail for reasons that are fixable. A non-AICTE institute code, a defective disability or income certificate, missed institute verification, or a bank account that breaks DBT. Many "rejections" are actually a Defective status, meaning the form was returned for correction rather than refused. Reason 1: Institution is not AICTE-approved

This is the most common cause of an otherwise valid application failing. If your college is not approved by AICTE, its institute code will not appear on the National Scholarship Portal and you cannot even select it.

Fix: Confirm your institution's AICTE approval and institute code before applying. If the college is genuinely not AICTE-approved, Saksham is not available to you. It is a technical-education scheme tied to AICTE-approved institutions only.

Reason 2: Defective or invalid disability certificate

The disability certificate must certify at least 40 percent disability and be issued by the competent government medical authority. Certificates from private hospitals, individual doctors or NGOs are not accepted, and some reviewing authorities reject certificates that are old.

Fix: Get a current certificate from a government medical board showing 40 percent or more, upload a clear (non-blurry) scan, and re-upload if the status turns Defective.

Reason 3: Income certificate problem

Family income from all sources must not exceed Rs 8 lakh for the current financial year. Applications fail when the certificate shows higher income, or was issued for the wrong financial year, or is from an authority that is not the competent one.

Fix: Submit an income certificate from the competent State/UT authority for the correct financial year, showing income within Rs 8 lakh. Re-upload a valid certificate if the form is marked defective on this point.

Reason 4: Institute verification not completed

AICTE does not process applications that the institute has not verified on NSP. A student can submit correctly and still fail because the institute nodal officer missed the verification deadline.

Fix: After you submit, actively ask your institute's scholarship nodal officer to verify the application on the portal before the institute verification deadline. Do not assume submission is enough.

Reason 5: Bank account breaks DBT

Saksham is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer, so the account must be in the student's own name and Aadhaar-seeded. A joint or parent's account, or an unseeded account, causes the sanction to fail at payment even after approval.

Fix: Open or use an account in your own name, get it Aadhaar-seeded and mapped at the bank, and enter the exact account number and IFSC on NSP.

Reason 6: Detail mismatch or blurry documents

Mismatches between the application and the supporting documents — name, date of birth, course, and blurry uploads are common defect triggers.

Fix: Make the personal details on the form match your certificates exactly, and upload legible scans within the size and format limits NSP specifies.

Reason 7: Renewal not filed

The award is not permanent by itself. It continues only if you file the renewal application each subsequent year with your passing marksheet and a head-of-institution verification letter. A missed renewal ends the scholarship even though the first-year award was sanctioned.

Fix: File the renewal on NSP within the renewal window every year, and track it as you did the fresh application.

How to correct a Defective application and raise a grievance

1. Log in to scholarships.gov.in and open your dashboard.
2. If status is Defective, read the stated defect reason and correct or re-upload the flagged item within the correction window shown (typically around 30 days).
3. Resubmit, then confirm your institute re-verifies it.
4. For issues you cannot resolve on the portal, contact the National Scholarship Portal helpdesk on 0120-6619540 with your application ID, and your institute's nodal officer for verification problems.
