What is the Research Grant for In-Service Faculty Members?

Research Grant for In-Service Faculty Members is a scheme of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which functions under the Ministry of Education. You can apply if:

• You are a regularly appointed, full-time faculty member in an eligible institution.
• You are below 50 years of age on the date of application.
• You have at least 10 years of service remaining before retirement.
• You have supervised at least 5 full-time Ph.D. candidates to completion.
• You have completed at least 2 sponsored research projects funded by a national or international, government or private agency.

Eligible institutions, per the UGC, include:

• Universities, institutions and colleges recognised under Sections 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act, 1956, with valid NAAC accreditation.

How to check your application status

The Fellowship and Research Grant (FRG) portal at frg.ugc.ac.in is the only place to track a submitted application, since there is no offline filing route for this grant.

1. Log in to frg.ugc.ac.in with the same credentials used to submit the application.
2. Open the applicant dashboard, which shows the current stage: submitted, forwarded by institution, under referee evaluation, or a final decision.
3. Check for a message or status flag showing whether your institution has forwarded the application. Since the head of institution's endorsement is a required step, an application stuck at "pending institutional forwarding" has not actually reached the UGC's evaluation queue yet.
4. Watch for referee assignment or comments once forwarding is confirmed. The UGC assigns at least three subject referees, and this evaluation stage is typically the longest part of the cycle since it depends on referee turnaround.

Common reasons for rejection

• Faculty not in a regular, full-time post. Guest, ad-hoc, contractual, temporary or part-time teachers are excluded outright, regardless of how strong their research record is. There is no appeal route for this; the fix is to apply only after securing a regular appointment.
• Age or remaining service does not meet the cut-off. Applicants at or above 50 years, or with fewer than 10 years of service left before superannuation, are disqualified at the eligibility check itself, before the proposal is even sent for referee review. An unaided college without valid 12(b) status or current NAAC accreditation is not an eligible host institution, even if the individual faculty member meets every personal criterion. • Missing or incomplete institutional forwarding. Because the application must be forwarded by the head of the institution with an undertaking, an application that reaches the deadline without this forwarding step completed is treated as incomplete. • Weak or vague research proposal. Since awards are merit-based, not entitlement-based, a proposal lacking a clear methodology, realistic timeline, or a properly itemised budget is more likely to score poorly with referees even when the applicant clears every eligibility bar. A generic or overly broad research question, without a specific, fundable objective, is a common reason for rejection at the referee stage.
• Budget includes disallowed items. Proposals that request funding for international travel, furniture, or hiring a research assistant or fellow conflict with the UGC's stated permitted uses (minor equipment, consumables, contingencies, fieldwork and domestic travel). Revise the budget to only these categories before submission.
