What is CSIR Research Associateship (RA)?

Research Associateship (RA) is a fellowship of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Human Resource Development Group (CSIR-HRDG), which functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology. According to the CSIR-HRDG page, the associateship supports highly qualified researchers who have completed a doctorate (or an equivalent professional qualification) to carry out advanced research in science, engineering and medicine at universities, IITs, national laboratories and other recognised institutions.

The RA sits above the Junior and Senior Research Fellowships in the research ladder. It is aimed at people who already hold a PhD and want to continue in active research while receiving a monthly stipend and allowances. The scheme is merit-based and competitive, and the number of associateships is limited.

How much does a Research Associate get?

According to CSIR-HRDG, the RA stipend is fixed at one of three levels:

• Rs 58,000 per month. The normal rate at which the stipend is fixed.
• Rs 61,000 per month, in justified cases.
• Rs 67,000 per month, the highest level, subject to justification and the approval of the Director-General, CSIR.

In addition, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is admissible as per Government of India rules, depending on the city and whether accommodation is provided by the host institution.

Who is eligible for Research Associateship?

You can apply if you hold one of these qualifications:

• A PhD in science or engineering, or
• An MD/MS/MDS in a medical subject, or
• An ME/M.Tech/M.Pharm/M.VSc with three years of R&D experience.

You must also have at least one research publication in a standard refereed journal listed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).

The upper age limit is 35 years, relaxable by:

• 5 years for SC/ST, persons with disability and women applicants;
• 3 years for OBC (non-creamy-layer) applicants.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not hold a completed PhD or the equivalent professional degree with the required experience — a fresh graduate is not eligible.
• You have no JCR-listed research publication.
• You have already completed three years of RA tenure across UGC, DST, ICMR or ICAR, since the three-year ceiling is cumulative.
• You are over 35 and do not qualify for a relaxation.

How to apply for CSIR Research Associateship

1. Watch csirhrdg.res.in for the annual RA advertisement and note the opening and closing dates.
2. Identify a proposed supervisor and host institution willing to accommodate your research.
3. Fill the online application on the CSIR-HRDG portal with your academic details, publication and age proof.
4. Take a print of the submitted form and get it forwarded through your supervisor and head of department.
5. Ensure the hard copy reaches CSIR-HRDG within the prescribed dates shown in the advertisement.
6. If shortlisted, appear for the interview before the discipline-wise expert committee.

How are candidates selected?

Selection is made through an interview by discipline-wise high-level expert committees that assess the candidate's academic record and published or project work. Meeting the minimum qualification only makes you eligible to be considered, the final award depends on the committee's assessment and the number of associateships available.

Tenure and continuation

The associateship is initially granted for one year and can be extended, on the basis of annual assessment, up to a maximum total tenure of three years. This ceiling includes any RA period already availed from UGC, DST, ICMR or ICAR, and any SRF extension, so the three-year limit is counted across schemes.

How to check your application status

CSIR-HRDG does not run a real-time online tracking dashboard for individual RA applications the way some portals do, so status checking is mostly a matter of watching the advertisement cycle and following up directly.

• Confirm submission first. After filling the online form on csirhrdg.res.in, note the application number or acknowledgement generated on submission. Keep the printed, supervisor-forwarded hard copy receipt (courier tracking number or postal receipt) as your proof that the physical copy reached CSIR-HRDG by the deadline.
• Watch the shortlist notice. CSIR-HRDG typically posts the list of shortlisted candidates called for interview on the same portal page where the RA advertisement appeared, under Fellowships. There is no SMS or email status update by default, so check the portal periodically rather than waiting for a notification.
• Interview call letters. If shortlisted, the call letter for the interview before the discipline-wise expert committee is usually issued through the portal or by email/post to the address given in the application. If the advertised interview dates have passed and you have received nothing, that generally means you were not shortlisted for that cycle.
• Follow up through your supervisor and department. Because the RA application is routed through the proposed supervisor and head of department, they are often copied on correspondence from CSIR-HRDG. If you have not heard anything as the interview dates approach, ask your supervisor's office whether any communication has arrived.
• Contact CSIR-HRDG directly for a specific case. For a stalled or unclear application, use the contact details on the CSIR-HRDG Contact Us page (csirhrdg.res.in) to write in or call, quoting your application number, the advertisement reference number and the date you submitted the hard copy.
• After selection. Once selected, the award letter and joining formalities are communicated to you and the host institution; there is no separate "status check" step after this as the process shifts to joining and stipend disbursal through the host institute.

Common reasons for rejection

• Qualification does not match what is asked. A PhD thesis submitted but not yet awarded, or a professional degree that is not PhD/MD/MS/MDS or ME/M.Tech/M.Pharm/M.VSc with three years of R&D experience, is rejected at the screening stage. Fix: apply only once the degree is formally conferred and the certificate or provisional degree certificate is in hand, and apply under the correct qualification category.
• No JCR-listed publication, or the wrong kind of publication. A conference paper, a paper in a non-indexed or predatory journal, or a paper still "under review" and not yet published does not satisfy the requirement of at least one paper in a journal listed in the Journal Citation Reports. Fix: check the journal's JCR listing before applying, and only cite papers that are actually published (not merely accepted or submitted).
• Over the age limit without the correct relaxation proof. Applicants over 35 who do not attach the SC/ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), PwD or women's-category proof needed to claim the applicable relaxation are treated as over-age and rejected. Fix: attach the correct, current category certificate at the time of application, not after; an OBC certificate issued years ago that does not confirm non-creamy-layer status at the time of application is often not accepted.
• Already exhausted the three-year cumulative RA ceiling. Since RA tenure limits are counted cumulatively across UGC, DST, ICMR and ICAR, and include SRF extensions, an applicant who has already had three years of RA-equivalent support elsewhere is not eligible for a fresh RA term, even if the current application is otherwise complete. Fix: total your prior RA/SRF-extension tenure honestly before applying, and do not apply if you have already used up the three-year ceiling.
• Missing or late supervisor and head-of-department forwarding. An application that reaches CSIR-HRDG only in the applicant's own name, without the required forwarding and countersignature from the proposed supervisor and head of the host department, or one whose hard copy arrives after the prescribed date even though the online form was submitted on time, is rejected on procedural grounds. Fix: start the forwarding process well before the deadline, since supervisor and department sign-offs can take several days, and courier the hard copy with enough buffer to arrive before the cutoff, not on the cutoff date.
• No identified supervisor or host institution. Since the RA is meant to support research at a specific host institution under a named supervisor, an application without a willing supervisor and institution attached is generally not entertained. Fix: secure a supervisor's agreement in writing before starting the online application.
• Selection is competitive, not automatic. Even a fully eligible, complete application can be turned down simply because the discipline-wise expert committee had more qualified candidates than available slots in that cycle. This is not a "rejection for a fixable error" so much as normal competitive outcome; the only response is to strengthen the academic and publication record and reapply in a later cycle if still within the age and tenure limits.
