What is CSIR Research Associateship (RA)?

Research Associateship (RA) is a fellowship of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Human Resource Development Group (CSIR-HRDG), which functions under the Ministry of Science and Technology. According to the CSIR-HRDG page, the associateship supports highly qualified researchers who have completed a doctorate (or an equivalent professional qualification) to carry out advanced research in science, engineering and medicine at universities, IITs, national laboratories and other recognised institutions.

The RA sits above the Junior and Senior Research Fellowships in the research ladder. It is aimed at people who already hold a PhD and want to continue in active research while receiving a monthly stipend and allowances. The scheme is merit-based and competitive, and the number of associateships is limited.

How much does a Research Associate get?

According to CSIR-HRDG, the RA stipend is fixed at one of three levels:

• Rs 58,000 per month. The normal rate at which the stipend is fixed.
• Rs 61,000 per month, in justified cases.
• Rs 67,000 per month, the highest level, subject to justification and the approval of the Director-General, CSIR.

In addition, House Rent Allowance (HRA) is admissible as per Government of India rules, depending on the city and whether accommodation is provided by the host institution.

Who is eligible for Research Associateship?

You can apply if you hold one of these qualifications:

• A PhD in science or engineering, or
• An MD/MS/MDS in a medical subject, or
• An ME/M.Tech/M.Pharm/M.VSc with three years of R&D experience.

You must also have at least one research publication in a standard refereed journal listed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR).

The upper age limit is 35 years, relaxable by:

• 5 years for SC/ST, persons with disability and women applicants;
• 3 years for OBC (non-creamy-layer) applicants.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not hold a completed PhD or the equivalent professional degree with the required experience — a fresh graduate is not eligible.
• You have no JCR-listed research publication.
• You have already completed three years of RA tenure across UGC, DST, ICMR or ICAR, since the three-year ceiling is cumulative.
• You are over 35 and do not qualify for a relaxation.

How to apply for CSIR Research Associateship

1. Watch csirhrdg.res.in for the annual RA advertisement and note the opening and closing dates.
2. Identify a proposed supervisor and host institution willing to accommodate your research.
3. Fill the online application on the CSIR-HRDG portal with your academic details, publication and age proof.
4. Take a print of the submitted form and get it forwarded through your supervisor and head of department.
5. Ensure the hard copy reaches CSIR-HRDG within the prescribed dates shown in the advertisement.
6. If shortlisted, appear for the interview before the discipline-wise expert committee.

How are candidates selected?

Selection is made through an interview by discipline-wise high-level expert committees that assess the candidate's academic record and published or project work. Meeting the minimum qualification only makes you eligible to be considered, the final award depends on the committee's assessment and the number of associateships available.

Tenure and continuation

The associateship is initially granted for one year and can be extended, on the basis of annual assessment, up to a maximum total tenure of three years. This ceiling includes any RA period already availed from UGC, DST, ICMR or ICAR, and any SRF extension, so the three-year limit is counted across schemes.
