Scheme of Giving Awards to Eminent Artists - Kalai Sudarmani Award
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Kalai Sudarmani Award is the Tamil Nadu District Art Award for artistes aged 36 to 50 years, carrying a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a certificate. Three awards are given in the age group in each district, within 15 District Art Awards a year. In 2024-25, 690 eminent artistes were awarded across 16 districts.
What is the Kalai Sudarmani Award?
Kalai Sudarmani Award is one of the five District Art Awards given each year in Tamil Nadu by the District Art Societies, which function under the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Tamil Nadu. The award recognises an artiste in the 36 to 50 years age group and carries a cash award of Rs 10,000 with a certificate.
According to the department's Policy Note for 2025-26, District Art Societies were established in 1994 and are headed by the District Collector. These societies work to identify various art forms, preserve and promote traditional Tamil arts, and recognise talented artists by honouring them with district-level awards. Each district has one District Art Society.
The awards are banded strictly by age, and Kalai Sudarmani sits in the middle of that ladder:
| Age group | Name of award | Award amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 18 years | Kalai Ilamani | Rs 4,000 |
| 19 to 35 years | Kalai Valarmani | Rs 6,000 |
| 36 to 50 years | Kalai Sudarmani | Rs 10,000 |
| 51 to 65 years | Kalai Nanmani | Rs 15,000 |
| Above 65 years | Kalai Mudhumani | Rs 20,000 |
District Art Awards are presented to 15 eminent artistes in a district, with 3 awards given in each category. That means three Kalai Sudarmani awards per district in a year in which the district conducts its award function. In 2024-25, 690 eminent artistes were awarded in 16 districts.
Who is eligible for the Kalai Sudarmani Award, and who is not eligible?
You can be considered if:
- You are between 36 and 50 years of age. The award is defined by that band, and age proof decides which of the five District Art Awards you are considered for.
- You are an artiste practising an art form that the District Art Society works with. The societies exist to identify various art forms and to preserve and promote traditional Tamil arts.
- You belong to the district whose Art Society is making the award, since these are district-level honours.
- You have a record of performance or practice that the society can assess. These awards go to artistes described in the department's own words as eminent, so the selection turns on standing in the art form.
There is no income condition and no formal qualification requirement. This is a recognition, not a welfare payment.
You cannot receive Kalai Sudarmani if:
- You are outside the 36 to 50 years band. An artiste of 35 is not eligible for Kalai Sudarmani and falls in Kalai Valarmani at Rs 6,000; an artiste of 51 falls in Kalai Nanmani at Rs 15,000.
- You are not from the district in which the award is being given.
- Your district has not conducted its award function that year. In 2024-25 the awards were given in 16 districts, so not every district holds the function every year, and an artiste in a district that did not conduct awards has to wait.
- You are looking for regular financial support rather than a one-time recognition. An artiste in indigent circumstances is not eligible for relief under this award and should approach the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram, which sanctions Rs 3,000 per month to aged indigent artistes.
How to apply for the Kalai Sudarmani Award
- Register as an artiste with the Department of Art and Culture and obtain the artist identification card. The department has issued 86,050 identification cards to artistes, and the card is how the department recognises a practising artiste. It also gives priority to perform in government cultural programmes and entitles the holder to travel concession.
- Approach the District Art Society at your district collectorate. The society is headed by the District Collector and is the body that identifies artistes for the District Art Awards.
- Submit your biodata and record of work — art form, years of practice, teachers under whom you trained, major performances, institutions you have worked with, and earlier honours. Attach programme notices, photographs, press cuttings or recordings.
- Attach the supporting documents, age proof establishing that you fall in the 36 to 50 years band, Aadhaar, residence proof for the district, and a bank passbook copy in your own name.
- File the papers when the society calls for names for that year's District Art Awards, and keep an acknowledgement.
- Wait for the society's selection. Three artistes are chosen in each age category, fifteen in the district in all.
- Attend the district award function, where the cash award of Rs 10,000 and the certificate are given.
There is no year-round online application for this award. The route runs through the District Art Society, and being on the department's artist register is the practical precondition for being noticed by it.

How does Kalai Sudarmani differ from the state awards?
Tamil Nadu runs several parallel honours for artistes, and applicants regularly confuse them. The differences are worth setting out.
- Kalai Sudarmani is a district award of Rs 10,000 for the 36 to 50 age band, given by the District Art Society under the District Collector.
- Kalaimamani is the state-level award conferred by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram to artistes for their service in the field of arts. Each awardee receives a gold medal and a certificate of appreciation, and 1,924 artistes have been conferred with this award so far across Eyal, Isai, Natyam, Natakam, Cinema, Isai Natakam, folk arts, television and other arts.
- Kalaichemmal is the state honour for painters and sculptors, carrying a citation plaque, a cash award of Rs 1,00,000 and a certificate, given to 6 eminent artists every year.
- Porkizhi is a Rs 1,00,000 cash award distributed to senior Kalaimamani artistes living in indigent circumstances. In 2024-25 it was presented to 10 senior Kalaimamani awardees for a total of Rs 10 lakh.
- All-India level awards conferred by the Manram are the Bharathi award for literature, the M.S. Subbulakshmi award for music and the Balasaraswathi award for dance.
An artiste in the 36 to 50 band who has already been recognised at district level should look upward to Kalaimamani rather than repeat the district award.
Why nominations do not succeed
- Age outside the band. Kalai Sudarmani has a hard 36 to 50 boundary. Filing without matching age proof is the commonest reason for a name being moved to a different category or dropped.
- District did not hold awards that year. Sixteen districts conducted the function in 2024-25; artistes elsewhere had to wait for their district's cycle.
- Thin performance record. Three awards per age category per district make this competitive. A biodata without dates, venues and evidence rarely survives the society's scrutiny.
- Not registered with the department. Artistes who hold the identification card are visible to the department and to the society; those who do not are often simply unknown to it.
- Applying for the wrong scheme. An artiste needing regular income support is applying to the wrong door. The monthly assistance of Rs 3,000 for aged indigent artistes is the correct one.
Where to ask and where to complain
- District level: the District Art Society at your district collectorate, headed by the District Collector, which selects and confers the award.
- Regional level: the Regional Cultural Centres at Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thanjavur, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore.
- State level: the Department of Art and Culture at artandculture.tn.gov.in, and the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram for state-level honours.
No fee is payable for a District Art Award, and no intermediary can obtain one. Selection rests with the District Art Society.
How to check your application status
There is no online portal or tracking number for a Kalai Sudarmani nomination, so the follow-up is entirely offline, through the same District Art Society that receives the papers.
- Keep the acknowledgement you received when you filed your biodata. Since the society does not issue a formal application number, this receipt (or the covering letter you submitted with) is what you refer to when you follow up.
- Check with the District Art Society at the district collectorate on whether the district has called for names for that year's District Art Awards at all. Not every district conducts the function every year (only 16 districts did so in 2024-25), so the first thing to confirm is whether your district's cycle is even open.
- Ask whether the selection list has been finalised. Three artistes are chosen per age category in a district, so the society can tell you whether names have gone forward for the 36 to 50 years group and whether the list has been approved.
- Watch for the district award function announcement. Selected artistes are informed to attend the function where the cash award of Rs 10,000 and certificate are presented; if you have not been contacted as the function date approaches, that is itself a signal on where your nomination stands.
- Escalate to the Regional Cultural Centre covering your district (Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thanjavur, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirappalli or Coimbatore) if the District Art Society is unresponsive.
- Contact the Department of Art and Culture at artandculture.tn.gov.in/contact-us for state-level queries if the district and regional channels do not resolve the matter.
Because this is a selection made by the society rather than a processed application with fixed stages, "status" here effectively means confirming whether your district has opened its cycle, whether your biodata was received, and whether your name is on the shortlist, each of which has to be asked for directly rather than looked up.
