What is the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award?

Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is the highest recognition given by the Government of India for outstanding achievement in adventure sports. According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the award honours mountaineers, sailors, aviators and explorers whose feats on land, water and in the air, or whose lifetime contribution to adventure, stand out at the national level.

The award is named after Tenzing Norgay, who along with Sir Edmund Hillary became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. Who is eligible for the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award?

Considered for the award:

• Indian nationals with a distinguished, verifiable record of adventure feats on land, sea or air during the qualifying period set by the Ministry.
• Individuals whose lifetime work has advanced adventure activity, for the Lifetime Achievement category.

Not eligible / cannot apply for a benefit:

• Members of the public cannot apply for a personal cash benefit. This is a merit honour decided by a selection committee, not an entitlement.
• Persons without a documented, nationally significant adventure record are not eligible. Ordinary participation in adventure activities does not qualify.
• Recognition is generally for Indian citizens; the award is not a general public grant scheme.

Because it is a nomination-based honour, there is no eligibility "form" to file for a payout. Eligibility is assessed by the committee on the strength of the nominee's achievements and supporting records.

There is no year-round individual application for a personal benefit. Instead, a nomination is routed to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports when it invites entries:
