What is the Research Assistantship scheme?

Research Assistantship is a student support scheme of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, which functions under the Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttarakhand. Under the scheme the university provides a research assistantship to undergraduate and postgraduate research scholars so that they can carry on their academic and research work.

The scheme is recorded in the Uttarakhand government's official compendium "Meri Yojana; Rajya Sarkar" (second edition), published by the Programme Implementation Department. In the Pantnagar University section of that compendium, the entry sits at serial number 2 under the research heading and is written in Hindi as रिसर्च असिस्टेंटशिप. The entry states plainly that the assistantship is given to undergraduate and postgraduate research scholars and that selection is made on the basis of a written examination and OGPA (Overall Grade Point Average) under criteria established by the university.

GBPUAT Pantnagar is India's first agricultural university and remains the largest research establishment in Uttarakhand. The same section of the state compendium records that the university is currently running 404 research projects, of which 14 give direct benefit to farmers, and that it has so far developed 354 crop varieties whose quality seed raises production and productivity by roughly 5 to 10 per cent. Research assistants are part of the workforce behind that output. They support field trials, laboratory work, data collection and analysis across the colleges of Agriculture, Basic Sciences and Humanities, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Technology, Fisheries, Horticulture and Community Science.

Why the scheme exists

  • To promote higher education and research within the state, which is the purpose the state compendium records for it.
  • To attach able students to live research programmes early, at undergraduate as well as postgraduate stage.
  • To reduce the financial pressure on a scholar who is giving time to research work alongside coursework.

Who can get a Research Assistantship?

You are eligible if:

  • You are a graduate or postgraduate research scholar — that is, a student who is actively pursuing research, not merely attending taught courses.
  • You are enrolled at GBPUAT Pantnagar. The scheme is internal to the university.
  • You appear in the written examination the university conducts for the purpose, and your OGPA meets the standard the university has fixed for that cycle.

You are not eligible and cannot apply if:

  • You are a research scholar at another university in Uttarakhand; Kumaun University, HNB Garhwal University, Doon University, Uttarakhand Open University, a private university, or an institute such as USERC or UCOST. Each of those bodies runs its own separate research support.
  • You are not enrolled at the time of selection. An alumnus, a candidate waiting for admission, or someone who has submitted a thesis and left cannot claim the assistantship.
  • You do not sit the written examination. Since the published criterion is a written examination together with OGPA, skipping the test removes you from the merit list regardless of your grades.
  • You are applying for a project-funded post such as JRF, SRF, Research Associate or Project Fellow. Those are advertised separately as recruitments with their own eligibility, and they are not this scheme.

The state compendium does not attach an income limit, an age limit, a caste category restriction or a domicile condition to this entry. Where it is silent, the university's own rules for the cycle govern.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
Application on the university's prescribed form Yes Issued when assistantships are advertised
Proof of enrolment as a research scholar Yes Registration slip, ID card or bonafide certificate
OGPA / academic grade record Yes One of the two stated selection criteria
Written examination admit card and result Yes Selection rests on the written examination
Bank account details Yes Required for disbursement

The compendium records the documents as those needed "in accordance with the university guidelines prescribed for this scheme", so the operative list is whatever the university's notice for that cycle specifies.

How to apply for the Research Assistantship

  1. Confirm you are a research scholar on the university's rolls. Only enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate research scholars at GBPUAT Pantnagar are in scope.
  2. Watch for the university notice. Assistantship notices are circulated through the colleges and posted in the Student Corner section of gbpuat.ac.in. There is no separate state portal to monitor.
  3. Submit the application on the prescribed form to the office named in the notice, within the dates it gives, along with your enrolment proof and grade record.
  4. Appear in the written examination the university conducts for selection. Carry the admit card and identity proof.
  5. Wait for the merit list. The university combines the written examination result with academic performance (OGPA) under its own established criteria and publishes the selection.
  6. Complete the joining and bank formalities so that the assistantship can be disbursed.

How is selection actually made?

The selection route is the most concrete thing published about this scheme, and it is worth reading closely. The state compendium says selection is made "through a written examination established by the university and grade (OGPA)". Two consequences follow for an applicant.

First, the written examination is not a formality. A scholar with an excellent OGPA who performs poorly in the test can be displaced by someone with a slightly lower OGPA and a strong paper. Second, OGPA is the second half of the score, so the semester grades a student earns before applying continue to count. A scholar planning to apply should treat the coursework grades as part of the application rather than as something separate from it.

Because the criteria are "established by the university", they can be revised from cycle to cycle. The weightage between the written examination and OGPA, the syllabus of the test and the number of assistantships on offer are all set in the notice, not in the state compendium.

Why applications fail

  • Not enrolled as a research scholar at the time applications are invited.
  • Absent from the written examination, which removes the applicant from the merit list.
  • Incomplete grade record, so OGPA cannot be computed and scored.
  • Application submitted outside the notified window or not on the prescribed form.
  • Losing on comparative merit where the number of assistantships is smaller than the number of eligible applicants. This is the commonest outcome and it is not a defect in the application.

Where to ask questions and raise a grievance

  • Your Dean or Head of Department at GBPUAT Pantnagar, who receives and forwards the applications, is the first point of contact.
  • The office named in the notice handles queries on dates, syllabus and the merit list.
  • gbpuat.ac.in publishes scholarship, fellowship and assistantship notices in the Student Corner section.
  • Department of Agriculture, Government of Uttarakhand is the parent department under which the university functions, and agriculture.uk.gov.in carries its scheme and contact pages.
  • "Meri Yojana; Rajya Sarkar" on uk.gov.in is the state document that records this scheme, its beneficiary group and its selection route.

No fee is charged for applying, and no agent can arrange an assistantship. Any demand for money in exchange for selection should be reported to the university.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for the Research Assistantship at Pantnagar?

Undergraduate and postgraduate research scholars pursuing research at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, are eligible. The scheme is internal to the university, so scholars at other Uttarakhand universities are not eligible.

How are research assistants selected?

Selection is based on a written examination and academic performance measured by OGPA, under criteria established by the university. Both elements matter — a strong grade record does not by itself secure the assistantship, and neither does the written test alone.

How much is paid under the Research Assistantship?

The Uttarakhand state scheme compendium records the benefit as a research assistantship for undergraduate and postgraduate scholars but does not print a rupee figure against it, so the rate is the one the university notifies for that session. Do not rely on figures quoted by unofficial sites.

Is this the same as a JRF or SRF?

No. A Junior or Senior Research Fellowship is normally tied to a funded research project and advertised as a recruitment. The Research Assistantship listed in the state compendium is a student support measure for scholars already enrolled at the university.

Can an undergraduate student get a research assistantship?

Yes. The published entry names both undergraduate ("Snatak") and postgraduate ("Snatakottar") research scholars, which is unusual and is one of the distinguishing features of this scheme.

Is there an online application portal?

No state online portal accepts applications for this assistantship. The route is through the university, and notices appear in the Student Corner section of gbpuat.ac.in and on college notice boards.

Does the assistantship continue automatically each year?

No. Continuation is not automatic. Selection is a competitive process repeated by the university, so a scholar has to be selected again for a later cycle.
