Vigyan Jyoti vs Similar Schemes: Which Should You Choose?

If your daughter is a school student interested in science, the closest schemes to compare are Vigyan Jyoti and INSPIRE Awards-MANAK, both run by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The short answer: Vigyan Jyoti gives mentoring and exposure to girls in Classes 9-12, while INSPIRE-MANAK gives a cash award for an innovation idea to any student in Classes 6-10. They serve different purposes, and a girl can benefit from both.

For full details on activities, eligibility and how schools register students, read the Vigyan Jyoti guide. One-line reminder: Vigyan Jyoti is a girls-only STEM programme with no cash scholarship: support is camps, lab visits, role-model interactions and counselling.

Vigyan Jyoti vs INSPIRE Awards-MANAK

Feature Vigyan Jyoti INSPIRE Awards-MANAK
Who runs it DST (WISE-KIRAN umbrella) DST (INSPIRE scheme)
Who is eligible Girls only, Classes 9-12 Any student, Classes 6-10 (age 10-15)
School type Only designated JNV/KV Knowledge Centres Any middle/high school in India
What you get Camps, mentoring, visits, counselling; no cash Rs 10,000 to develop a science project/innovation
How you enter School nominates during a registration phase School nominates up to 5 students per year with idea entries
Basis Merit and interest in STEM An original science/tech innovation idea

The practical difference: INSPIRE-MANAK rewards a specific idea and moves the best through district, state and national levels. Vigyan Jyoti is a year-long ecosystem of exposure aimed at keeping girls in the STEM pipeline. According to the Vigyan Jyoti portal, it works only through JNV and KV Knowledge Centres, so reach is narrower but the hand-holding is deeper.

Vigyan Jyoti vs INSPIRE Scholarship (SHE)

Families sometimes confuse Vigyan Jyoti with the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE), which gives Rs 80,000 a year to top-ranking students who pursue a natural-science degree. The distinction is stage:

  • Vigyan Jyoti is a school-stage programme (Classes 9-12) with no scholarship.
  • INSPIRE-SHE is a college-stage scholarship for BSc/BS/MSc integrated students in basic sciences.

A girl can go through Vigyan Jyoti in school and then apply for INSPIRE-SHE if she takes a science degree. They are consecutive, not competing.

Vigyan Jyoti vs other WISE-KIRAN components

Vigyan Jyoti is itself one component of DST's WISE-KIRAN umbrella. The others, WISE-PhD, WISE-PDF, WISE-SCOPE — are research fellowships for adult women with monthly emoluments. There is no overlap in age: Vigyan Jyoti stops at Class 12, and the WISE fellowships begin at postgraduate or doctoral level. Think of them as different rungs of the same ladder.

Can a student hold more than one?

Yes. Vigyan Jyoti participation does not bar a girl from also being nominated for INSPIRE Awards-MANAK, since one is a mentoring programme and the other is an award for an idea. Later, INSPIRE-SHE and, eventually, the WISE fellowships are open to her on their own merits. Because Vigyan Jyoti pays no cash, there is no double-benefit rule to worry about at the school stage.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Vigyan Jyoti if your daughter is a girl in Classes 9-12 at a JNV or KV Knowledge Centre and you want sustained STEM exposure, mentoring and lab visits, and ask the school's nodal teacher to nominate her in the open registration phase.
  • Choose INSPIRE-MANAK if the student (girl or boy, Classes 6-10) has an original science idea and you want a cash award and a competitive national platform. This works at any school.
  • Do both where eligible: Vigyan Jyoti for the ecosystem, INSPIRE-MANAK for the idea-driven award.
