What is the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for full-time PhD candidates?

The Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics and IT is a fellowship programme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), implemented through Digital India Corporation. Stage 1: PhD admission status, before you are enrolled in the scheme.

• This is decided entirely by the participating institute (NIT, IIIT, IIT or other supported institute), not by MeitY or Digital India Corporation.
• Check the institute's own admissions portal or notice board for merit lists, interview call letters and final selection results; this is the same process every other PhD applicant at that institute goes through.
• Contact the institute's PhD admission cell or the department office directly (by email or phone) if a result you were expecting has not been published; do not contact the scheme portal for this stage, since it has no visibility into an institute's internal admission process before enrolment.

Stage 2: fellowship enrolment and payment status, after admission.

Common reasons for rejection

Rejection under this scheme happens in two distinct places, at the institute admission stage and, less commonly, at the scheme-enrolment stage. Knowing which one applies to a given case determines what can actually be fixed.

• Academic cut-off not met. The most frequent reason a candidate is turned away is falling short of the required CGPA or percentage: below 6.5 CGPA/60% for M.E./M.Tech candidates (6.0/55% for SC/ST), or below 8.0 CGPA/75% for B.E./B.Tech candidates (7.0 CGPA for IIT/NIT graduates, with a 0.5-point SC/ST relaxation). Fix: this cut-off is fixed by the scheme's SOP and cannot be waived by an institute; a candidate below it should look at whether a category relaxation genuinely applies, or reapply after improving academic standing (for instance, via a fresh master's degree with a qualifying CGPA).
• PhD subject falls outside ESDM or IT/ITES.
