What is the NIELIT Internship Programme?

The NIELIT Internship Programme is a short-term training placement offered by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous scientific society under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). NIELIT runs centres across India in fields such as information technology, electronics, cyber security and related areas, and the internship gives students hands-on exposure to the work of these centres.

According to the scheme details published on the myScheme portal, an intern in a science and technology (S&T) section receives a stipend of Rs 5,000 per month, while an intern in a non-S&T section receives Rs 3,000 per month. The stipend is paid only after the internship concludes and the intern submits a completion report, and it is transferred by cheque, NEFT or RTGS: never in cash.

The programme is delivered by individual NIELIT centres rather than a single central intake, so the exact intake, sections available and contact points vary by centre. For example, NIELIT Haridwar accepts a maximum of five interns per section in a year. Prospective interns should confirm openings with the specific centre they wish to join.

Who is eligible for the NIELIT Internship Programme?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You are currently enrolled in a recognised university or institution, in India or abroad.
• You are pursuing a diploma, bachelor's/engineering or master's/postgraduate qualification.
• You have scored at least 60% marks in your last degree or certificate examination.
• Your institution will issue a sponsorship/forwarding letter and a No Objection Certificate.

You cannot apply if:

• You are a school student — school-level students are explicitly ineligible.
• You do not have an institutional endorsement. NIELIT does not accept self-sponsored walk-in interns under this scheme.
• You have already completed a NIELIT internship. The opportunity is one-time per intern.

Because each centre sets its own section-wise intake, meeting the eligibility bar does not guarantee a place. Availability depends on whether the centre has an open slot in a relevant section.

What documents are required for a NIELIT internship?

How to apply for the NIELIT Internship Programme

1. Identify the NIELIT centre and the section (S&T or non-S&T) where you want to intern, and confirm that slots are open by contacting the centre.
2. Obtain a sponsorship/forwarding letter and NOC from your head of department or supervisor at your institution.
3. Prepare your application with the forwarding letter, your latest marksheet (showing at least 60% marks), Aadhaar, identity and address proof, proof of enrolment, a passport photograph and bank account details.
4. Submit the application offline to the Programme Coordinator at the chosen NIELIT centre. For NIELIT Haridwar, this is the Programme Coordinator, 2nd Floor, Government Polytechnic Building, SIDCUL, Haridwar, Uttarakhand-249403.
5. Await confirmation from the centre. If selected, join on the agreed date, report to your assigned mentor and maintain at least 80% monthly attendance.
6. Submit your completion report at the end. The stipend is released after this, and you receive a completion certificate countersigned by your supervisor.

How much benefit does a NIELIT internship provide?

The financial benefit is the monthly stipend; Rs 5,000 for S&T section interns and Rs 3,000 for non-S&T interns. The stipend is paid at the end of the internship, after the completion report is accepted, and is disbursed electronically. Beyond the stipend, the main benefit is the completion certificate and the practical exposure to NIELIT's technical work, along with a dedicated mentor for the duration of the placement.

NIELIT emphasises that the internship is neither employment nor an assurance of employment. There is no automatic path from the internship to a job at NIELIT.
