What is the NDRI Institute Scholarship?

The NDRI Institute Scholarship is a financial-support scheme run by the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, a deemed-to-be university under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research within the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. According to the NDRI Scholarships/Fellowships page, the scheme pays a monthly scholarship and an annual contingency grant to students of Indian nationality who are admitted to the institute's Master's and Doctoral programmes and who do not hold any other financial assistance.

NDRI is India's premier dairy-research and dairy-education institution, offering postgraduate degrees in dairy technology, dairy chemistry, dairy microbiology, animal biotechnology, livestock production and management, dairy economics and related disciplines. The Institute Scholarship exists so that admitted students can pursue full-time research without needing separate employment, and it is one of several support instruments alongside the higher ICAR Junior and Senior Research Fellowships.

The contingency grant is meant for research-related costs such as chemicals, field work, printing and travel. The scholarship and contingency are credited to the student's own bank account.

Students who separately qualify for the ICAR Junior Research Fellowship (for Master's) or Senior Research Fellowship (for Ph.D.) draw those higher amounts instead of the Institute Scholarship. A student cannot receive both.

Who is eligible for the NDRI Institute Scholarship?

You are eligible if:

• You are a student of Indian nationality.
• You have been admitted and enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral programme at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal.
• You are pursuing the programme full time.
• You do not hold any other scholarship, fellowship or stipend.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You are not admitted to NDRI. The scholarship is only for the institute's own enrolled students and is not open to outside applicants.
• You already hold another fellowship such as ICAR-JRF/SRF, a UGC or CSIR fellowship, or any employer stipend beyond the in-service category. Accepting external funding while on the Institute Scholarship results in its immediate termination.
• You are a foreign national admitted under a separate quota — the Institute Scholarship is limited to Indian nationality; foreign students are governed by their own funding arrangements.

Because it is tied to admission, there is no open competition for the Institute Scholarship itself. The real gate is admission to NDRI.

How to apply for the NDRI Institute Scholarship

The scholarship is not applied for separately. It follows admission. The steps that actually get you the scholarship are the admission steps:

1. Appear in the ICAR all-India entrance examination for postgraduate admission (Master's or Ph.D.), conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of ICAR, and secure a rank in a dairy-science discipline offered by NDRI.
2. Accept your seat and complete enrolment at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal, submitting your admission, nationality and bank details to the academic section.
3. Sign the scholarship declaration confirming that you hold no other financial assistance, after which the Institute Scholarship and contingency are sanctioned for the standard duration.
4. Draw the monthly scholarship until thesis submission or the end of the maximum period (two years for Master's, three years for Ph.D.), whichever is earlier.

How long does the scholarship last?

• Master's: from joining until thesis submission or completion of two years, whichever is earlier.
• Ph.D.: from joining until thesis submission or completion of three years, whichever is earlier.

No extension is granted beyond these limits, so students are expected to submit their thesis within the funded period.

Is this a standalone benefit or part of NDRI's wider funding?

The Institute Scholarship is the base level of support for NDRI postgraduates. Above it sit the ICAR JRF and SRF, awarded on merit in the entrance examination, which pay more. A student receives one or the other, never both. Because the Institute Scholarship is narrow: limited to NDRI's own enrolled students, prospective applicants should focus on qualifying for admission through the ICAR entrance route first; the scholarship then follows automatically.
