What is the NDRI Institute Scholarship?

The NDRI Institute Scholarship is a financial-support scheme run by the ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Karnal, a deemed-to-be university under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research within the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The contingency grant is meant for research-related costs such as chemicals, field work, printing and travel. The scholarship and contingency are credited to the student's own bank account.

Students who separately qualify for the ICAR Junior Research Fellowship (for Master's) or Senior Research Fellowship (for Ph.D.) draw those higher amounts instead of the Institute Scholarship. A student cannot receive both.

Who is eligible for the NDRI Institute Scholarship?

You are eligible if:

• You are a student of Indian nationality.
• You have been admitted and enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral programme at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal.
• You are pursuing the programme full time.
• You do not hold any other scholarship, fellowship or stipend.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You are not admitted to NDRI. The scholarship is only for the institute's own enrolled students and is not open to outside applicants.
• You already hold another fellowship such as ICAR-JRF/SRF, a UGC or CSIR fellowship, or any employer stipend beyond the in-service category. Accepting external funding while on the Institute Scholarship results in its immediate termination.
• You are a foreign national admitted under a separate quota. The Institute Scholarship is limited to Indian nationality; foreign students are governed by their own funding arrangements.

Because it is tied to admission, there is no open competition for the Institute Scholarship itself. The real gate is admission to NDRI.

How to apply for the NDRI Institute Scholarship

The scholarship is not applied for separately. It follows admission. The steps that actually get you the scholarship are the admission steps:

1. Appear in the ICAR all-India entrance examination for postgraduate admission (Master's or Ph.D.), conducted by the National Testing Agency on behalf of ICAR, and secure a rank in a dairy-science discipline offered by NDRI.
2. Accept your seat and complete enrolment at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal, submitting your admission, nationality and bank details to the academic section.
3. Sign the scholarship declaration confirming that you hold no other financial assistance, after which the Institute Scholarship and contingency are sanctioned for the standard duration.
4. Draw the monthly scholarship until thesis submission or the end of the maximum period (two years for Master's, three years for Ph.D.), whichever is earlier.

How long does the scholarship last?

• Master's: from joining until thesis submission or completion of two years, whichever is earlier.

No extension is granted beyond these limits, so students are expected to submit their thesis within the funded period.

Is this a standalone benefit or part of NDRI's wider funding?

The Institute Scholarship is the base level of support for NDRI postgraduates. Above it sit the ICAR JRF and SRF, awarded on merit in the entrance examination, which pay more. A student receives one or the other, never both. Because the Institute Scholarship is narrow: limited to NDRI's own enrolled students, prospective applicants should focus on qualifying for admission through the ICAR entrance route first; the scholarship then follows automatically.

How to check your application status

Because the Institute Scholarship is not a separate application, there is no online tracking portal or application number to look up. Status here means confirming that your scholarship has been sanctioned and that your monthly payment is actually being credited. Follow up this way:

1. Check with your department's academic/scholarship section first, not the central NDRI office. Each division (Dairy Technology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Microbiology, Animal Biotechnology, Livestock Production and Management, Dairy Economics, and so on) maintains its own scholar records and processes the sanction order for its own students.
2. Ask for the sanction order number and date once your declaration of no other financial assistance has been accepted. This order is the only formal record that the scholarship has started; there is no separate approval letter beyond it.
3. Check your bank account around the month-end disbursal cycle. Because payment goes directly to the student's account, a missed or delayed credit for two consecutive months is the clearest sign something needs following up, not a portal status flag.
4. Contact the NDRI academic section by phone on the number published on ndri.res.in if a payment is delayed beyond the usual cycle, quoting your enrolment number, division and the month in question.
5. Escalate to the Dean of Post Graduate Studies' office if your division cannot resolve a stalled payment, since the Dean's office consolidates scholarship disbursal across all divisions at the institute.

There is no SMS alert or email notification system for this scholarship; students track it through their own bank statements and direct contact with their department.

Common reasons for rejection

Very few students are outright refused the Institute Scholarship once admitted, since it is meant to be automatic. In practice, payment gets withheld, delayed or stopped for a small number of specific reasons:

• Holding another fellowship at the same time. Any student found to be drawing a UGC, CSIR, ICAR-JRF/SRF or employer stipend alongside the Institute Scholarship has that scholarship terminated, since it is designed to be the base level of support and not a top-up. The fix is to declare any other assistance honestly at the outset and choose the higher fellowship you actually qualify for instead of holding two.
• Incomplete or unsigned declaration. The scholarship depends on the signed declaration of no other financial assistance. If this form is not submitted, or is submitted without a countersignature from the guide or head of division, the academic section cannot sanction payment. Submit the declaration through your division office at the time of enrolment, not later.
• Bank account details not updated or mismatched. Payment fails or is delayed when the account number, IFSC code or account holder name on file does not match the student's own KYC-verified bank account. Re-verify these details with the accounts section as soon as any bank account change happens, such as switching banks mid-programme.
• Nationality proof not on record. Since the Institute Scholarship is restricted to Indian nationals, a missing nationality document in the admission file can hold up sanction, particularly for students admitted through categories where this was not checked at the entrance-exam stage. Submitting the nationality proof to the division office resolves this.
• Lapse beyond the funded period. Scholarship payment stops automatically once the maximum period lapses (two years for Master's, three years for Ph.D., or the third year for Ph.D. students moving to the higher rate) without thesis submission. This is not a rejection to appeal; students nearing this limit should discuss thesis timelines with their guide well before the cutoff rather than expecting an extension.
• Break in enrolment or leave without sanction. A student who goes on unsanctioned leave, or whose enrolment lapses for any reason, has the scholarship paused until re-enrolment is formally confirmed by the division. Any leave should be applied for and approved through the proper academic channel in advance.
