What is the INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)?

INSPIRE – Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) is a scheme of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology, that encourages talented young students to take up the study of the natural and basic sciences. It is one component of the wider Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) programme, DST's flagship scheme to attract talent to science.

According to DST, the SHE component provides scholarships of Rs 80,000 per year to about 10,000 meritorious students each year who choose to study basic and natural sciences at the undergraduate and integrated postgraduate level. The aim is to reverse the drift of top students away from pure science and towards professional courses, by rewarding those who commit to a science career early.

Who is eligible for the INSPIRE scholarship?

You can apply if:

• You are within the broad age band of 17 to 22 years.
• You fall into one of the eligibility routes:
• Top 1% of successful candidates in your Class 12 board examination in the science stream, or
• A qualifying rank/threshold in national examinations such as JEE Main or NEET (within the notified cut-off), or
• A qualifier in KVPY, NTSE, or an international/national science Olympiad.
• You take admission in a natural or basic-science course: B.Sc., B.S., Integrated M.Sc. or M.S., in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics or Geology at a recognised institution.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You are pursuing a professional course such as engineering, medicine, technology, pharmacy or management. These are not covered by SHE.
• You do not meet the top-1% board threshold or the qualifying national-exam rank.
• You are studying a subject outside the natural and basic sciences.

Because eligibility is anchored to fixed thresholds and a fixed number of awards, the scholarship is competitive and the exact cut-offs are notified by DST each year.

How much does INSPIRE SHE provide?

The scholarship is worth Rs 80,000 per year, made up of:

• Rs 60,000 as the annual scholarship, to support tuition and living costs; and
• Rs 20,000 as a mentorship / summer-project grant, released when the student carries out a summer project or internship under an active researcher at a recognised institution or university.

The scholarship continues for up to five years, provided the student maintains the academic performance required by the scheme (a minimum standard of marks each year). Payment is by DBT into an Aadhaar-seeded bank account.

How to apply for the INSPIRE scholarship

Applications are made online on the INSPIRE portal. The route is:

1. Go to the official INSPIRE portal at online-inspire.gov.in during the application window notified by DST.
2. Register with your details and select the SHE (Scholarship for Higher Education) component.
3. Enter your eligibility route: top-1% board rank or the qualifying national exam, and your admission details in a basic-science course.
4. Upload your Class 12 marksheet or exam rank, eligibility certificate, Aadhaar and bank details.
5. Submit the application online, and later log in to track verification and renewal each academic year.

Students should apply within the early part of their basic-science degree, as the scheme is intended to be joined at the start of higher education.

What documents are required?

Renewal and continuation

INSPIRE SHE is not a one-time award. A scholar must renew each year through the portal, showing that they have continued in the basic-science course and met the minimum academic performance. Failure to meet the performance standard, or a switch to a non-eligible professional course, ends the scholarship.

Help and where to go

Queries about eligibility, application and renewal are handled through the DST INSPIRE programme via the portal online-inspire.gov.in, where the current year's cut-offs, dates and FAQs are published. Because thresholds and the number of awards change from year to year, students should rely on the official portal for the current cycle rather than on third-party sites.

How to check your application status

Once you have submitted your SHE application on online-inspire.gov.in, use the same portal login to track where it stands, rather than waiting for an email or SMS to arrive on its own.

1. Go to online-inspire.gov.in and log in with the credentials you created at registration.
2. Open your dashboard or application status section. This shows whether your eligibility documents (board result or exam rank, admission proof, Aadhaar, bank details) are still under verification, have been accepted, or have been flagged for correction.
3. If your record shows a query or discrepancy flag, read the remark carefully. It usually names the exact document or field the verifying authority could not confirm, such as a mismatch between your name on the marksheet and on Aadhaar.
4. Once selected, check the same dashboard each academic year at renewal time, since SHE is not paid automatically. The portal will show whether your renewal documents (current year marksheet, continued admission proof) have been accepted for that cycle's disbursement.
5. If the online status has not moved for several weeks during an active application window, or if it looks stuck without any query, contact DST INSPIRE through the helpline and contact details published on online-inspire.gov.in rather than through unrelated third-party numbers or forwarded messages.
6. Keep a copy of your application/registration number from the portal; you will need it for every status check and for any correspondence about a stuck or rejected application.

Common reasons for rejection

• Missed the top-1% or rank cut-off by a narrow margin. DST fixes a fresh cut-off (board percentage or exam rank) every year, and it is not published in advance. A student who assumed last year's cut-off would apply again can be rejected purely on this ground. Fix: check the current year's notified cut-off on online-inspire.gov.in before applying, and if you are close to the line, apply anyway and let the portal's automated check confirm rather than self-rejecting.

• Admission is in a professional or non-covered course. Engineering, medical, pharmacy, management and technology degrees are explicitly outside SHE, even if the student otherwise clears the top-1% or exam-rank bar. Fix: confirm your admitted course falls under the natural/basic sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics, Geology and similar) before applying; a BSc/BS/Integrated MSc/MS tag alone is not sufficient if the subject itself is not a basic science.

• Name or date-of-birth mismatch across documents. A common cause of a stuck or rejected application is the name, spelling or date of birth on the Class 12 marksheet not matching Aadhaar or the bank account. Fix: get any spelling difference corrected at the source (school board record or Aadhaar) before submitting, since the portal's verification step checks these fields against each other.

• Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, or account details entered incorrectly. Since the scholarship is paid by DBT, an account that is not linked to Aadhaar, or a wrong account/IFSC entry, causes the transfer step to fail even after the application itself is approved. Fix: seed your Aadhaar with the bank account you intend to use, and double-check the account number and IFSC code before final submission.

• Missing or unclear eligibility certificate. Applicants sometimes upload a general marksheet without the specific board-issued or exam-body eligibility certificate/rank proof the portal requires to confirm the top-1% or qualifying-rank claim. Fix: obtain the correct eligibility certificate from your board or the conducting exam body (JEE Main, NEET, KVPY, Olympiad body, as applicable) rather than relying on the marksheet alone.

• Renewal lapse due to falling below the required academic performance. Existing scholars can lose the scholarship at renewal, not at first application, if their annual marks drop below the standard DST requires for continuation. Fix: track your own academic performance against the renewal requirement each year, and if you are at risk, check the portal's renewal notice early rather than after the cycle closes.

• Applying outside the notified window. INSPIRE SHE opens for a limited application period each year; a form submitted before or after this window is not processed. Fix: watch online-inspire.gov.in for the announcement of that year's opening and closing dates rather than assuming the scheme is open year-round.
