What is the ICSSR Senior Fellowship?

The ICSSR Senior Fellowship is a research fellowship awarded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), an autonomous body funded by the Ministry of Education. According to the ICSSR senior fellowship guidelines, it is meant for accomplished, mid-to-late-career social scientists who have a substantial body of published work and want to devote two years to a major piece of full-time research.

The ICSSR Senior Fellowship pays Rs 45,000 per month for two years, plus a contingency grant of Rs 40,000 per annum, for scholars who are unemployed or superannuated. Serving faculty in public-funded institutions may instead opt for salary protection, continuing to draw their regular pay while on the fellowship, and still receive the contingency grant. The fellowship is full-time and cannot be extended beyond two years.

Who is eligible for the ICSSR Senior Fellowship?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You are between 45 and 70 years of age on the last date of application.
• You hold a Ph.D. in a social science discipline.
• You have outstanding research publications: books published by reputed publishers and/or research papers in peer-reviewed journals with a high impact factor.
• You can affiliate to a recognised institution. A UGC-recognised university, deemed-to-be-university, institute of national importance or ICSSR research institute — that agrees to host the fellowship.

You cannot apply if:

• You are younger than 45 or older than 70 on the last date of application.
• You do not hold a Ph.D. or lack the required publication record.
• You are a defaulter of any previous ICSSR fellowship, project or grant.
• You have already held this same fellowship. It is a one-time award.
• Less than two years have passed since you completed a previous ICSSR fellowship or project.

The fellowship is a full-time engagement. A scholar who is unwilling to give up other salaried commitments, and who does not qualify for, or does not choose, the salary-protection route through their own institution: will not be able to hold it.

How to apply for the ICSSR Senior Fellowship

1. Watch the ICSSR website (icssr.org) for the annual advertisement for senior fellowships. Applications are accepted only during the notified window.
2. Log in to the ICSSR portal at app.icssr.org and register or sign in as an applicant.
3. Complete the application form with your academic record and full list of publications, and upload your Ph.D. certificate and age proof.
4. Upload your research proposal and the affiliation/consent letter from your host institution. If you are serving faculty opting for salary protection, attach the no-objection certificate from your employer.
5. Submit before the deadline and save the acknowledgement. Shortlisted candidates go through a multi-phase evaluation by subject experts, including a presentation or interaction.

Selected fellows must join and submit the required documentation, usually within one month of the award letter, to begin the fellowship.

How much benefit does the ICSSR Senior Fellowship provide?

For unemployed and superannuated scholars, the fellowship provides Rs 45,000 per month for 24 months, Rs 5.4 lakh a year in stipend, plus a contingency grant of Rs 40,000 per year. For serving faculty who choose salary protection, the benefit is continuation of regular salary, allowances, leave salary and pension/CPF contributions during the fellowship, along with the contingency grant; special allowances like education or medical reimbursement are excluded.

In return, the fellow commits to full-time research, publishes at least two peer-reviewed research papers or edited-book chapters during the tenure, submits periodic progress reports, and acknowledges ICSSR support in all outputs.
