What is the ICMR-Junior Research Fellowship?

The ICMR-Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is a national fellowship for young postgraduates who want to pursue research in biomedical, life-science and health social-science areas. It is run by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the apex body for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research in India, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

According to ICMR, the fellowship supports selected candidates to work towards a PhD or to carry out research in ICMR institutes, medical colleges, universities and other recognised research centres. A key change to note: from 2024, the JRF selection has been folded into the Biomedical Research Eligibility Test (BRET), so candidates now apply for BRET rather than a stand-alone JRF exam.

Who is eligible for the ICMR-JRF?

You can apply if:

• You hold a master's degree (MSc or equivalent) in a relevant Life Sciences or Social Sciences subject with the minimum marks specified by ICMR.
• You are within the upper age limit — ICMR's notifications set this at 28 years, with relaxations for reserved categories, women and persons with benchmark disabilities.
• You appear for and qualify the BRET / JRF examination conducted by ICMR.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not hold the required postgraduate qualification in an eligible subject.
• You are over the age limit and do not qualify for any relaxation.
• You are seeking a direct grant without qualifying the examination. The fellowship is awarded only through the test, not on application alone.

Because the JRF is a merit-cum-examination fellowship, there is no route to it by nomination or by application to ICMR outside the notified BRET cycle.

5. Check the result and merit list published by ICMR; qualified candidates receive a fellowship award letter.
6. Join a recognised host institution within the validity period stated in the award letter to start drawing the fellowship.

How much benefit does the ICMR-JRF provide?

An ICMR Junior Research Fellow draws a stipend of Rs 31,000 per month during the first two years, plus House Rent Allowance as admissible and an annual contingency grant of Rs 20,000 for consumables, travel and other research expenses. After two years, on satisfactory assessment, the fellow can be upgraded to Senior Research Fellow with a stipend of Rs 35,000 per month for the remaining research tenure.

The fellowship is paid to the individual scholar through the host institution. It is a research-support benefit, not a personal welfare payment, and is contingent on the fellow being engaged in approved research work.

How to check your application status

Because the JRF is now awarded through the Biomedical Research Eligibility Test (BRET), status checking happens in stages rather than through a single running tracker.

1. Registration confirmation: after submitting the online BRET/JRF form, check the confirmation message or email generated on submission. Keep a printout or screenshot; this is the only proof of having applied if the portal shows a discrepancy later.
2. Admit card stage: log back in to the same application account on the ICMR fellowships page (icmr.gov.in/fellowships) closer to the exam date and check whether the admit card download link is active for your registration number. No admit card usually means an incomplete form, an unpaid fee, or a rejected application at the scrutiny stage; in that case there is no separate rejection notice, so absence of the admit card is itself the signal.
3. Result and merit list: after the exam, ICMR publishes the result and category-wise merit list on the same fellowships page, searchable by roll number or registration number. This shows whether a candidate is selected, waitlisted, or not qualified.
4. Award letter tracking: selected candidates are issued a fellowship award letter by post or email. If it does not arrive within a reasonable time after the merit list, contact ICMR headquarters directly (011-26588895) with the registration number and exam roll number, rather than assuming an automatic mail failure.
5. Post-joining stipend status: once joined at a host institution, stipend disbursal status is tracked through the host institution's accounts or research cell, not through ICMR directly, since ICMR releases funds to the institution rather than to the fellow.

Common reasons for rejection

• Postgraduate qualification does not match the notified subject list. ICMR specifies eligible Life Sciences or Social Sciences subjects for each cycle; an MSc in a subject not on that list is rejected at scrutiny even if the marks are adequate. Check the exact subject list in the current notification, not just the general "MSc or equivalent" description, before applying.
• Marks below the minimum percentage specified. Applications with aggregate postgraduate marks below ICMR's cut-off (with the usual relaxation for reserved categories) are rejected outright. Recompute the aggregate exactly as ICMR defines it (sometimes final year alone, sometimes the full course) rather than using the university's own rounding.
• Age exceeds the upper limit on the notified cut-off date. The 28-year limit is calculated as of a specific date fixed in each advertisement, not the date of applying or appearing for the exam. Candidates who apply without checking this cut-off date, assuming their own calculation of age, are a common rejection category; category-based age relaxation must also be claimed with the correct certificate, not assumed automatically.
• Category certificate not in the valid format or period. SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD certificates that are expired, issued by an authority not recognised for central government purposes, or not carrying the non-creamy-layer clause for OBC, are treated as if no certificate was submitted, which removes the relaxation and can push the candidate over the age or marks cut-off.
• Incomplete or mismatched online form details. Discrepancies between the name, date of birth, or qualification entered in the form and what appears on supporting documents lead to rejection at the verification stage. This is avoidable by cross-checking every field against the certificate before final submission, since BRET forms typically cannot be edited after the submission deadline.
• Fee not paid or payment not reconciled before the deadline. A payment made through a failed or delayed transaction that is not visible in ICMR's system by the closing date is treated as a non-payment, and the application is not considered, even if the bank shows the amount debited. Candidates should complete payment well before the last date and retain the transaction receipt to raise a grievance if the payment is not reflected.
• Not qualifying the BRET cut-off itself. Since the fellowship is awarded strictly by rank within the notified number of seats (around 150) and subject-wise quota, candidates who clear the minimum qualifying marks but fall outside the merit list for their subject or category are not awarded a fellowship in that cycle; this is a merit outcome, not an application error, and the only recourse is to reapply in a subsequent BRET cycle.
• Failure to join within the award letter's validity window. Selected candidates who do not join a recognised host institution within the period stated in the award letter forfeit the fellowship, since ICMR does not automatically extend joining deadlines. Candidates who need more time should contact ICMR before the deadline lapses rather than after.
