What is the MEA Internship Programme?

The Internship Programme by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is a short, structured placement that lets young Indian graduates spend one to three months working alongside officials of the Ministry in New Delhi. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the aim is to give interns first-hand exposure to how India's foreign policy is made and how the Ministry operates, while widening the pool of young people who understand India's diplomacy.

Interns typically assist Heads of Division with research and other tasks, giving them a practical view of the workings of a major central ministry. The programme is deliberately inclusive: the MEA states that it seeks gender balance and diversity across educational backgrounds, geographic regions and socioeconomic circumstances, so that the opportunity is not limited to a narrow group.

This is a competitive, small-intake programme rather than a mass scheme. It is best understood as an early-career exposure opportunity, not a benefit or a recruitment channel.

Who is eligible for the MEA internship?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You hold a bachelor's degree from a recognised university, or you are in the final year of graduation where an internship is a mandatory part of your course curriculum.
• You are not older than 25 as on 31 December of the year in which you apply.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not an Indian citizen. The programme is open only to Indian nationals.
• You are over 25 on the reference date.
• You do not have, or are not completing, a qualifying bachelor's degree.

Because the number of places per term is limited, meeting these criteria makes you eligible to apply but does not guarantee selection. The Ministry selects interns from the applications received for each term.

How to apply for the MEA internship

1. Open the official portal at internship.mea.gov.in during an open application window.
2. Register with your full name, gender, email ID and a password to create your account.
3. Fill in the application form with your educational qualifications, age and citizenship details.
4. Upload the required documents; degree/marksheet, proof of age and identity, and photograph.
5. Submit the application before the term's closing date. Applications are invited ahead of each term.
6. Wait for selection by the Ministry of External Affairs. Selected candidates are informed and given their internship term and reporting details.

The programme runs in two terms each year, commonly April to September and October to March, so watch the portal for the opening of the relevant term.

What do interns get?

• An honorarium of Rs 10,000 per month to help cover basic costs during the internship.
• One round-trip economy-class airfare reimbursed between the intern's state capital and Delhi.
• Hands-on exposure assisting Heads of Division within the Ministry.

Interns must arrange and pay for their own board and lodging in Delhi — the Ministry does not provide accommodation. The internship lasts one to three months and, importantly, does not lead to a job in the Ministry or the Indian Foreign Service. It is an exposure and learning opportunity only.

What do interns actually do at the MEA?

During the placement, interns are attached to a division of the Ministry and assist the Head of Division with substantive work. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this can include background research on countries and regions, help with briefs and reports, and support on the division's ongoing tasks. The idea is to give interns a realistic sense of how a foreign ministry functions day to day, rather than a purely observational visit.

The programme is structured around two terms so that students at different stages of the academic year can participate: one term over the summer months and one over the winter. Because a limited number of interns are taken per term, the divisions are able to give each intern meaningful work instead of spreading a large group thinly.

The MEA has designed the programme with inclusivity in mind. It explicitly seeks a mix of interns across gender, educational streams, regions and socioeconomic backgrounds, and reimburses one round-trip economy airfare precisely so that students from outside Delhi are not shut out by travel costs. This is why the eligibility is kept simple: Indian citizenship, a bachelor's degree (or qualifying final-year status) and an age cap of 25.
