Internship Programme at Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO)

What is the SFIO Internship Programme?

The Internship Programme at the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) is a short-term internship run by SFIO, a multi-disciplinary investigation agency under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India. SFIO investigates white-collar crimes and corporate frauds using experts in accountancy, forensic audit, law, information technology, company law, capital markets, income tax and customs.

According to the SFIO internship guidelines, the programme was started in 2017 (approved by the Ministry in 2016) to provide a platform for interaction between SFIO officers; including those in its Regional Offices, and talented young scholars and researchers from reputed academic institutions. Interns gain hands-on exposure to the working of a premier government investigation agency and to specialised skills in their own area of study, along with transferable skills such as communication, computer proficiency and team work.

Who is eligible for the SFIO internship?

According to the SFIO guidelines, the internship is open to Indian nationals only who meet the academic conditions below.

You can apply if you are:

• A student in a post-graduate course such as MBA (Finance).
• A law student in the 4th or 5th year of a five-year integrated law course, or a fresh law graduate with an excellent academic record and a first-class graduation degree.
• A student pursuing post-graduation with a high second-class graduation degree (at least 55% marks).
• A student pursuing masters or research in Economics, Finance, Management, Law or Computer Forensics from recognised universities in India or abroad.
• A student in the final year (or equivalent) of ICAI, ICAI (CMA) or ICSI, or from Central Universities, AICTE-recognised financial/economic institutions, recognised national management institutes, or foreign universities and institutions of excellence.

A first-class degree in graduation is mandatory, and post-graduation candidates need a high second-class graduation degree with at least 55% marks.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not an Indian national — the programme is restricted to Indian nationals.
• You do not hold a first-class graduation degree (for the categories where it is mandatory) or do not meet the 55% threshold.
• You are outside the listed disciplines, the scheme is targeted at commerce, finance, economics, management, law and computer forensics streams and the three professional institutes.

Selection is competitive: even eligible applicants are chosen on merit and subject to the availability of slots, and the total number of interns at any one time cannot exceed six.

How much does the SFIO internship pay?

The intern is paid a stipend of Rs 7,000 per month for the period of the internship, on certification from the officer the intern is attached to. The expenditure is met from SFIO's sanctioned grants under the "Office Expenses" head. Interns are provided office space and a computer with internet facility as logistic support. There is no separate travel or accommodation allowance in the guidelines.

How to apply for the SFIO internship

The SFIO internship is applied for through your institution, not by open individual registration. According to the SFIO guidelines:

1. Watch for the annual notification. SFIO issues a notification every year in May and writes to the registrars and placement cells of identified law schools, universities and professional institutes (ICAI, ICAI-CMA and ICSI).
2. Approach your institution's registrar or placement cell, who calls for applications from interested students and collects them in SFIO's prescribed format.
3. Fill in the application form with your personal details, academic profile, computer proficiency, area of interest and preferred internship slot, and affix a passport-size photograph.
4. Attach self-attested photocopies of your certificates and marksheets and have the form endorsed by the sponsoring authority of your institution.
5. Ensure the application reaches SFIO by 15 June of that year, along with the convenient time and permissible duration as per your academic curriculum.
6. Await selection by the committee chaired by the Director, SFIO. If selected, furnish the declaration of secrecy before you join.

After the internship

Interns are attached to various units of SFIO and are required to present an assignment report on the allotted subject to the Director, SFIO, at the end, along with feedback on the programme. A certificate of internship is awarded on satisfactory completion and evaluation of the report. The guidelines state clearly that the internship is neither a job nor an assurance of a job in SFIO.

Points applicants most often get wrong

• You cannot walk in as an individual: the institution routes your application and endorses it.
• The window is tight: notified in May, closing 15 June.
• The stipend is a flat Rs 7,000 per month, and the internship is capped at two months.
• It carries no job guarantee whatsoever.
