WISE-KIRAN vs Similar Schemes: Which Should You Choose?

This is a supporting guide for WISE-KIRAN (Women in Science and Engineering - KIRAN). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.

WISE-KIRAN vs Similar Schemes: Which Should You Choose?

For a woman scientist, the real comparison is between DST's WISE-KIRAN fellowships and the general research fellowships open to everyone. The ANRF (formerly SERB) National Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and DST's own INSPIRE Fellowship. The short answer: WISE-KIRAN is designed specifically around the two points where women leave science. The entry into research and the career break, and its post-doctoral rate is higher than the general N-PDF. But the general schemes are open year-round-style through their own calls and do not require you to be unemployed. This article helps you choose.

For full component details, read the WISE-KIRAN guide. One-line reminder: WISE-KIRAN is DST's women-only umbrella covering WISE-PhD (Rs 37,000/month + HRA) through WISE-PDF (Rs 67,000/month + HRA), applied for at onlinedst.gov.in.

WISE-PDF vs ANRF (SERB) National Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Both support post-doctoral research, but one is women-only and one is open to all.

Feature WISE-PDF (WISE-KIRAN) ANRF N-PDF (ex-SERB)
Who is eligible Women only, PhD holders, age 27-60 Any researcher with a PhD/MD/MS (age relaxation for women)
Monthly emolument Rs 67,000 + HRA Rs 55,000 (as listed by SERB/ANRF)
Research grant Rs 2 lakh/year (per DST WISE-PDF page) Rs 2 lakh/year
Purpose Independent research by women scientists General post-doctoral research

According to the DST WISE-PDF page, the WISE-PDF emolument of Rs 67,000 a month is higher than the N-PDF rate of Rs 55,000. For an eligible woman, WISE-PDF is usually the better-paid route. The trade-off: WISE-PDF runs on periodic announced calls, so timing matters.

WISE-PhD vs DST INSPIRE Fellowship / CSIR-UGC JRF

For doctoral funding, women have more than one option:

  • WISE-PhD; women-only, for unemployed women who have not completed two or more years of PhD, Rs 37,000/month + HRA plus a Rs 1 lakh/year research grant. Best when you are re-entering or starting a PhD without another fellowship.
  • INSPIRE Fellowship / CSIR-UGC NET-JRF; open to all, merit/exam-based, standard JRF/SRF rates. Best if you have qualified the relevant exam and are not restricted by the unemployment condition.

The deciding factor is often the unemployment rule: WISE-PhD's restriction to unemployed women rules it out for those already in a job or holding another fellowship, for them the general routes fit better.

WISE-KIRAN vs its own components

WISE-KIRAN is not one scheme, so part of "which should you choose" is choosing the right component:

  • WISE-PhD, starting a PhD, unemployed.
  • WISE-PDF, have a PhD, want an independent project.
  • WISE-SCOPE — returning after a career break with a translational project.
  • WIDUSHI: senior scientist near or past retirement (up to age 62).
  • WISE-IPR. A one-year path into intellectual-property work rather than the bench.
  • WINGS; international research exposure.

Can you hold more than one?

No. You cannot draw two full-time research fellowships for the same period. A WISE-KIRAN fellowship and an ANRF N-PDF or INSPIRE Fellowship are mutually exclusive while active, because each requires you to work full-time on that funded project. What you can do is move between them in sequence: for example, hold WISE-PhD, then apply for WISE-PDF or N-PDF after your doctorate. Always check the specific call's terms on concurrent funding before accepting.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose WISE-PDF if you are a woman with a PhD who wants the higher post-doctoral emolument and an independent project, and you can align with an open call.
  • Choose WISE-PhD if you are an unemployed woman starting a PhD without another fellowship.
  • Choose ANRF N-PDF or INSPIRE/CSIR-UGC routes if you are already employed, hold another fellowship, or the WISE call is not open when you need to start.
  • Choose WISE-SCOPE or WIDUSHI if your situation is a career break or a senior-stage return. The general schemes have no equivalent tailored route.

FAQ

Is WISE-PDF better paid than N-PDF? Per the DST page, yes; Rs 67,000 vs Rs 55,000 a month, and WISE-PDF is women-only.

Can I hold WISE-PhD and CSIR-JRF together? No, you cannot draw two full-time research fellowships for the same period.

Are men eligible for any WISE-KIRAN component? No. All WISE-KIRAN fellowships are women-only; men should use the general ANRF/INSPIRE/CSIR routes.
