What is the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme?

The AICTE-IDEA (Idea Development, Evaluation and Application) Lab Scheme is an initiative of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the statutory technical-education regulator under the Ministry of Education. Under the scheme, AICTE helps its approved institutions establish an IDEA Lab. A shared, well-equipped facility where students apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fundamentals to hands-on work, "learning by doing" and product visualisation.

According to the AICTE scheme document, the purpose of an IDEA Lab is to provide all facilities under one roof for converting an idea into a prototype. With prototyping tools on campus, more students and faculty are encouraged to take up creative work and pick up 21st-century skills: critical thinking, problem solving, design thinking, collaboration and communication, that conventional teaching labs do not build. The scheme is explicitly aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, which calls for experiential, multidisciplinary learning.

Importantly, the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme is an institutional grant, not an individual benefit. A college or university department applies for and hosts the lab; students then run it under faculty guidance. There is no personal scholarship or stipend attached.

How much benefit does the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme provide?

AICTE follows a matching-grant model: it contributes up to 50% of the project cost and the institution (ideally with industry support) provides the rest.

• Current round: the estimated project cost per AICTE Lab is about Rs 90 lakh — non-recurring expenditure on equipment, tools and consumables plus recurring expenditure on events and activities for two years. AICTE can provide up to 50%, i.e. up to Rs 30 lakh.
• Earlier rounds (prior to FY 2024-25): the estimated project cost was Rs 110 lakh (Rs 80 lakh non-recurring and Rs 30 lakh recurring), with AICTE providing up to Rs 55 lakh.

Weightage is given to institutions that muster additional funds, especially from industry. AICTE releases up to 80% of the sanctioned amount as the first instalment, and only after the institution has deposited its proportional matching share in an exclusive IDEA Lab bank account. Once a project is sanctioned, AICTE will not consider any request for additional grants, the institution must cover any shortfall and fund the lab's running beyond the two-year project period itself. Assets bought from the grant belong to the institution and cannot be disposed of without AICTE's permission.

Who is eligible for the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme?

An institution can apply if:

• It is an AICTE-approved engineering college or university department.
• It has been in existence for at least 10 years.
• It has at least one course with live NBA accreditation.
• It can commit at least 50% of the project cost (higher weightage for extra funds from industry).
• It can provide at least 3,000 sq. ft. of built-up, furnished space (2,000 sq. ft. for the lab and 1,000 sq. ft. for student activities; 5,000 sq. ft. is ideal), plus all support staff, amenities and a safe working environment.

Who cannot apply: Individual students, faculty members, alumni or members of the public are not eligible. This is not a personal scholarship. Institutions that are not AICTE-approved, that are less than 10 years old, that lack a live NBA-accredited course, or that cannot commit the matching contribution and space, are not eligible. Non-performing or non-compliant institutions can have their grant recalled and be debarred from future AICTE grants.

How to apply for the AICTE IDEA Lab Scheme

Applications are made online by the institution on the IDEA Lab Network portal. Individual applicants have no route here, the steps are for the college or university.

1. Register the institution at idealnet.aicte-india.org: click "Log In", then "Register".
2. Click Get Details so the institute's name, address and email auto-populate, then enter your Institute's Permanent Id.
3. Fill in all mandatory details and set a password, then click Register.
4. Verify the institution's email using the activation link AICTE emails to the registered address.
5. Log in and submit the IDEA Lab proposal, spelling out the vision for the lab, the implementation plan, faculty strength and resource commitment, and upload the equipment quotations and the contribution and endorsement letters.
6. AICTE shortlists proposals, subjects them to scrutiny by an expert panel, and sanctions selected projects; the two-year project begins once funds are received.

Monitoring and support

Every IDEA Lab becomes part of the IDEA Lab Network (IDEALNET), through which AICTE monitors labs on common parameters for five years and encourages collaboration and healthy competition between labs. The Head of Institution is the ex-officio Chief Mentor, and a Faculty Coordinator and Co-coordinator assist the students who manage the lab.
