What is the Visitor's Award?

The Visitor's Award is a national recognition instituted for the Central Universities of India, administered by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. In the Central University system, the President of India is the Visitor, the ceremonial head of these universities, and the awards are conferred in that capacity to recognise outstanding academic achievement.

According to the scheme details on the myScheme portal, each award carries a cash prize of Rs 2,50,000. Where an award is shared among more than one recipient, each awardee receives a minimum of Rs 1,00,000. One award is given per category each year, alongside a citation.

The award is designed to encourage excellence and healthy competition among Central Universities by publicly honouring their best faculty and students. It is a recognition-and-reward scheme, not a grant or scholarship. The money is a prize for work already done, not funding for future study.

Central Universities are those established by an Act of Parliament, and the Visitor's Award applies only to this group. Because the President is the Visitor of these institutions, the award carries the highest ceremonial standing in the Indian higher-education system, and being conferred by the President is often valued as much as the cash prize itself.

Who is eligible for the Visitor's Award?

You can be considered if:

• You are a faculty member or student of a Central University in India.
• Your work falls within one of the categories — Innovation, Research or Technology Development.
• You (or a senior officer of your university) submit the application online with the required supporting material.

You are not eligible if:

• You are a faculty member or student of a state university, private university or deemed university: only Central Universities fall under the Visitor.
• Your work does not fit any of the three award categories.
• Your submission is incomplete or made outside the notified process; only online applications are accepted.

Eligibility opens the door, but the award is competitive. A selection committee shortlists nominations and forwards its recommendations to the President of India, who makes the final selection as Visitor.

What documents are required for the Visitor's Award?

How to apply for the Visitor's Award

1. Register or log in on the National Awards Portal at awards.gov.in.
2. Select the Visitor's Award and the relevant category: Innovation, Research (with its sub-field) or Technology Development.
3. Complete the online application form with your academic and work details.
4. Upload the supporting documents; your photograph, resume and technical documents, a presentation of up to five slides, and a video link where applicable.
5. Provide the details of two referees, one of whom must be your university's Vice Chancellor.
6. Submit the application before the notified deadline. A Vice Chancellor, Dean, Director or Professor of your institution may also nominate you through the same portal.

How the Visitor's Award is decided and presented

After the online window closes, a selection committee evaluates the nominations and forwards its recommendations to the President of India, who makes the final choice in the capacity of Visitor of Central Universities. The awards are then presented by the President at the annual Conference of Vice Chancellors of Central Universities, or at the Visitor's Conference held each year.

Each awardee receives the cash prize of Rs 2,50,000 (or a minimum of Rs 1,00,000 where the award is shared) together with a citation recognising the achievement.
