Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats, Assam
Assam state government scheme
Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats is an Assam government scheme launched on 2 January 2026 that pays Rs 1,500 a month to celibate Vaishnavite monks living in recognised Satras. About 620 Udasin Bhakats, 474 of them in Majuli, receive the money by direct bank transfer on the 10th of each month. Enrolment is through the Deputy Commissioner's office, not an online form.
What is the Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats?
Financial Assistance Scheme for Udasin Bhakats is a welfare scheme of the Government of Assam that pays Rs 1,500 a month to celibate Vaishnavite monks who live permanently inside recognised Satras. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the scheme on 2 January 2026 at the Lok Sewa Bhawan conference hall in Guwahati, after it was announced in the preceding state budget.
The scheme is the first of its kind in Assam. Udasin Bhakats take a vow of celibacy and live inside the Satra, giving up family life and an independent income. Their day-to-day needs have traditionally been met by community offerings and whatever the Satra itself can spare, which leaves an ageing bhakat with no cash of his own for medicine, spectacles, travel or clothing. The Rs 1,500 monthly credit is meant to give each bhakat a small, predictable amount of money in his own name.
Key features
- Benefit: Rs 1,500 per month, or Rs 18,000 a year.
- Payment date: credited by direct bank transfer on the 10th of every month.
- Coverage in the first list: about 620 Udasin Bhakats across Assam.
- Distribution is heavily concentrated in Majuli, with 474 beneficiaries, followed by Jorhat with 54; Lakhimpur, Kamrup, Barpeta and other districts have smaller numbers, and reported district figures vary slightly between sources.
- Fund distribution is handled through the Assam Satra Commission.
- Beneficiary lists are prepared by the offices of the respective Deputy Commissioners and verified by the District Commissioner or Additional District Commissioner.
What is a Satra and who counts as an Udasin Bhakat?
Satras are the monastic institutions of Ekasarana Dharma, the neo-Vaishnavite tradition founded in Assam by Srimanta Sankardeva in the sixteenth century. A Satra is at once a prayer hall, a residential monastery, a school of dance and music, and a landholding institution. Majuli, the large river island in the Brahmaputra, is the historic core of Satra culture, which is why 474 of the 620 first-list beneficiaries are from that district alone.
Bhakats inside a Satra fall broadly into two groups. Grihasthi bhakats are householders who may marry and live with their families while remaining attached to the Satra. Udasin bhakats take a vow of celibacy, renounce family life and live permanently within the Satra premises. This scheme is limited to the second group.
Who is eligible for the Udasin Bhakats scheme?
You can be enrolled if:
- You are an Udasin Bhakat, a celibate devotee who has renounced family life.
- You live permanently inside a Satra located in Assam.
- Your Satra is recognised by the state, and your name appears in the Satra's records of Udasin Bhakats.
- Your name is verified and included in the district list prepared by the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
- You hold an Aadhaar card and an active bank account in your own name for direct transfer.
You are not eligible if:
- You are a grihasthi bhakat or any married devotee who lives with a family. The scheme is explicitly for celibate Udasin Bhakats.
- You are attached to an institution that is not recognised as a Satra by the state.
- You are a monk of a Satra or Vaishnavite institution outside Assam.
- You do not reside permanently within the Satra.
- Your name has not been verified in the district record. Verification by the District Commissioner or Additional District Commissioner is the operative step, and lists are deliberately checked to prevent duplication or misuse.
How to apply for the Udasin Bhakats scheme
There is no online form and no application window in the usual sense. Enrolment works through the Satra and the district administration.
- Approach your Satradhikar or the managing committee of your Satra and ask that your name be entered in the Satra's record of Udasin Bhakats, which is the source document the district office uses.
- Obtain a certificate or letter from the Satra confirming that you are an Udasin Bhakat residing permanently in that Satra.
- Take the certificate, your Aadhaar card and your bank passbook to the office of the Deputy Commissioner or District Commissioner of your district and ask for inclusion in the Udasin Bhakat beneficiary list.
- Complete the verification carried out by the District Commissioner or Additional District Commissioner. This step exists to prevent errors, duplication and misuse, so expect the Satra record to be cross-checked.
- Confirm that your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded and active, because the Rs 1,500 is paid by direct transfer and a dormant or unseeded account will bounce the credit.
If you have no bank account, open a basic savings account first. A bhakat who cannot travel should ask the Satra to take the documents to the district office on his behalf.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate or letter from the Satra | Yes | Certifies Udasin status and permanent residence |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identity and bank seeding |
| Bank account passbook | Yes | The Rs 1,500 is credited by direct transfer |
| Proof of residence in Assam | Yes | District records are the primary basis |
| Recent photograph | No | Commonly asked for the beneficiary record |
How do I check whether the payment has been credited?
- Check your bank passbook or SMS alerts after the 10th of the month, which is the stated credit date.
- Ask the Satra office whether your name appears in the current district list, since the Satra is the point of contact for the list.
- Visit or write to the Deputy Commissioner's office of your district if the credit does not appear for a month even though your name is on the list.
Why a payment may not reach you
- Name not in the verified district list. This is the single most common reason, and it is fixed by getting the Satra to forward your name to the Deputy Commissioner's office.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the direct transfer cannot be routed.
- Account dormant or closed. Accounts with no transactions for a long period are frozen by banks, which is a real risk for a bhakat who rarely uses money.
- Name mismatch between the Aadhaar record, the Satra certificate and the bank account.
- Duplication flagged during verification, where the same person appears in two Satra records.
Help and grievance redressal
- Satradhikar or managing committee of your Satra. The first place to raise an omission or a wrong entry.
- Office of the Deputy Commissioner or District Commissioner of your district — the authority that prepares and verifies the beneficiary list.
- Assam Satra Commission, the body that handles fund distribution under the scheme and also deals with encroachment on Satra land, an issue the Chief Minister said affects 15,288 bighas across the state.
The Chief Minister said at the launch that if any Udasin Bhakats had been left out of the first list, the government would try to include them. An omission is therefore worth pursuing rather than accepting.
No fee is payable to anyone for enrolment in this scheme, and no agent or middleman has any role in the process. The list is built from Satra records and verified by the district administration alone.
A note on sourcing: this scheme was launched in January 2026 and, as of the last fact check, the Government of Assam had not published a dedicated scheme portal, notification PDF or helpline for it. The figures above come from the launch coverage by DD News, ANI and Assam news outlets. Confirm the current district-wise position with your Deputy Commissioner's office before acting on it.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched the scheme on 2 January 2026 at the Lok Sewa Bhawan conference hall in Guwahati. It had been announced in the preceding state budget.
Who is an Udasin Bhakat?
An Udasin Bhakat is a celibate devotee who lives permanently inside a Satra — a Vaishnavite monastery of Assam's Ekasarana tradition founded by Srimanta Sankardeva — and devotes his life to bhakti practice rather than to family or earning.
How many people get this assistance?
About 620 Udasin Bhakats across Assam are covered in the first list. Majuli accounts for the largest share at 474, followed by Jorhat with 54, and smaller numbers in Lakhimpur, Kamrup, Barpeta and other districts.
Can I apply online for the Udasin Bhakats scheme?
No. There is no online application form. Beneficiary lists are prepared by the office of the Deputy Commissioner or District Commissioner of each district from verified Satra records, and are then checked by the District Commissioner or Additional District Commissioner.
Who is not eligible for the Udasin Bhakats scheme?
Married bhakats and grihasthi devotees who live with their families are not eligible, because the scheme is limited to celibate Udasin Bhakats who reside permanently in a Satra. Bhakats of institutions not recognised as Satras by the state, and monks of Satras outside Assam, also cannot apply.
My name was left out of the first list. Can it still be added?
Yes. At the launch the Chief Minister said that if any Udasin Bhakats had been left out, the government would try to include them in the scheme. Raise the omission with your Satradhikar first and then with the Deputy Commissioner's office of your district.
Is the monthly amount taxed or deducted?
The full Rs 1,500 is credited to the beneficiary's bank account by direct transfer. No official has the authority to take a cut, and no fee is payable to anyone for enrolment.
