Old Age Pension, Chandigarh
Chandigarh state government scheme
Old Age Pension in Chandigarh pays Rs 1,000 per month to residents aged 60 years and above whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 1.50 lakh and who have lived in the Union Territory for more than 3 years. The Department of Social Welfare runs it. Apply online at chdservices.gov.in or at the Sector-17 office.
What is the Chandigarh Old Age Pension scheme?
Old Age Pension is a social security pension run by the Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Chandigarh Administration. According to the department's own scheme page, its objective is "to provide financial assistance to elderly people" living in the Union Territory.
Old Age Pension pays a flat Rs 1,000 per month to every sanctioned beneficiary. The department lists the incentive plainly as "Rs. 1000/- p.m". The pension is not graded by age, gender or category, a 61-year-old and a 91-year-old receive the same amount, provided both clear the income and residence tests.
Chandigarh is a Union Territory administered directly by the Chandigarh Administration under an Administrator, so this pension is a UT scheme, not a state one. The department that runs it sits at the Additional Town Hall Building, 3rd Floor, Sector 17-C, Chandigarh 160017, and the same office handles the widow pension and the disability pension.
Key features
- Flat monthly assistance of Rs 1,000, paid to the pensioner's own bank account.
- Age threshold of 60 years, with no upper age limit.
- Annual family income ceiling of Rs 1.50 lakh.
- Residence in Chandigarh for more than 3 years.
- Online application through e-District Chandigarh, live since 28 May 2017.
Who is eligible for the Chandigarh Old Age Pension?
The Department of Social Welfare publishes three eligibility conditions, and all three must be met together.
You can get the pension if:
- You are 60 years of age or above on the date of application.
- Your annual family income does not exceed Rs 1.50 lakh.
- You have been a resident of UT Chandigarh for more than 3 years, and can prove it with three years of residence documents.
You are not eligible if:
- You are below 60 years. There is no relaxed age for women under this particular Chandigarh scheme: unlike some neighbouring states, the threshold is 60 for everyone.
- Your family income crosses Rs 1.50 lakh a year. Note the wording on the department's page: it is the income of the family, not the applicant alone, so a pension-drawing parent living with well-earning children may fail this test.
- You have lived in Chandigarh for 3 years or less, or cannot produce residence documents covering that period.
- You live outside the Union Territory. Residents of Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, Panchkula or any other town in Punjab or Haryana are not eligible for the Chandigarh pension even if they work in Chandigarh; they must apply under their own state's old age pension scheme.
Chandigarh's department does not publish a caste or gender restriction for this pension. It is open to all communities.
What documents are required for the Chandigarh Old Age Pension?
The department asks for self-attested photocopies of the following.
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Two passport-size photographs | Yes | Listed explicitly on the scheme page |
| Residence proof of three years | Yes | Voter card, ration card, electricity bill or similar |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | For identity and for bank account seeding |
| Mobile number | Yes | Receives the e-District application number and status alerts |
| Proof of age | Yes | To establish 60 years and above |
| Income proof | Yes | To establish annual family income up to Rs 1.50 lakh |
| Bank passbook copy | Yes | First page showing account number and IFSC, in the applicant's name |
A practical point on residence proof: a single recent electricity bill does not satisfy a three-year requirement. Applicants are usually asked for documents spread across the period, for example an older ration card entry plus recent utility bills, so that continuity in Chandigarh is visible on the file.
If you do not already hold an income certificate or a residence certificate, both are separate e-District Chandigarh services. Income Certificate went live on 7 August 2015 and Residence/Domicile Certificate on 21 August 2015, and both can be applied for through the same Citizen Login you will use for the pension.

How to apply for the Chandigarh Old Age Pension offline
- Download the Form for Old Age Pension from chdsw.gov.in. The department publishes it in both English and Hindi as a single PDF of about 298 KB.
- Fill the form and attach self-attested photocopies of every document in the list above, along with two passport-size photographs.
- Submit the completed form at the Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development, Additional Town Hall Building, 3rd Floor, Sector 17-C, Chandigarh 160017.
- Ask for an acknowledgement or diary number when you hand the file in, and keep it for follow-up.
Older applicants who find the portal difficult often use the offline route with help from a family member. Both routes lead to the same sanctioning process; the online route simply gives you a trackable application number from day one.
How much pension is paid and how does the money arrive?
Old Age Pension in Chandigarh is Rs 1,000 per month, which works out to Rs 12,000 over a full year. Payment is made into the beneficiary's bank account, so the account details on the application must be accurate and the account must be in the pensioner's own name.
The pension is a recurring monthly entitlement, not a one-time grant. Once sanctioned it continues as long as the beneficiary remains alive, remains resident in Chandigarh, and continues to satisfy the income condition. The department maintains a Life Certificate section on chdsw.gov.in for exactly this reason: pensioners are expected to keep their life certificate current, and payments can be held up if it lapses.
Why do Chandigarh old age pension applications get rejected?
- Residence proof does not cover three full years. This is the single most common problem. A new electricity connection or a recently issued voter card proves you live in Chandigarh now, not that you have for more than 3 years.
- Family income above Rs 1.50 lakh a year. Applicants sometimes declare only their own income; the criterion is family income.
- Age below 60, or an age document that contradicts the form. A mismatch between the date of birth on Aadhaar and on a school certificate will hold the file up until it is reconciled.
- Bank account not in the applicant's own name, or an incorrect IFSC, which stops the transfer even after sanction.
- Address outside the Union Territory. An application listing a Mohali or Panchkula address is returned.
- Incomplete documents — missing photographs, an unsigned self-attestation, or an illegible passbook copy.
The fix in most cases is to obtain the missing certificate first. Because the income certificate and residence certificate are themselves e-District services, it is usually faster to get those sanctioned and then file or refile the pension application with them attached.
What are the key dates for this scheme?
Old Age Pension in Chandigarh has no fixed application window. Applications are accepted through the year and processed as they are received, so there is no last date to miss.
The date that matters is 28 May 2017, when the e-District portal launched "Sanction of Pension for Old Age" along with the disabled and widow pension services. Before that, the scheme was offline-only.

- Women and Child Helpline; 181, or mobile 9915023456 (for women's and children's issues; not a pension helpline)
- Lodge Your Grievances. The department's site carries a grievance link, and chdservices.gov.in has a Feedback section for e-District service complaints

Frequently asked questions
How much is the old age pension in Chandigarh?
Rs 1,000 per month. The Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development lists the incentive under Old Age Pension as "Rs. 1000/- p.m". The amount is the same for every sanctioned pensioner regardless of age above 60, and it is paid into the pensioner's own bank account.
What is the age limit for Chandigarh old age pension?
60 years and above. The department's eligibility list states "Age 60 years and above" with no upper age limit, so there is no age at which the pension stops. Age has to be proved with a document such as Aadhaar, a birth certificate or a voter card carrying the date of birth.
What is the income limit for Chandigarh old age pension?
The monthly family income of the applicant must not exceed Rs 1.50 lakh annually, as worded on the department's scheme page. This is a family income test, not an individual one, so the earnings of other members living in the household are counted.
How long must I have lived in Chandigarh to get the old age pension?
More than 3 years. The department requires the applicant to be a "Resident of UT, Chandigarh for more than 3 years" and asks for residence proof of three years — a voter card, ration card or electricity bill in the applicant's name showing a Chandigarh address.
Can I apply for Chandigarh old age pension online?
Yes. Sanction of Pension for Old Age was launched as an e-District service on 28 May 2017 and is available through the Citizen Login on chdservices.gov.in. The department's own scheme page carries an "Apply" button that opens the same e-District portal.
Who is not eligible for the Chandigarh old age pension?
Anyone below 60 years, anyone whose family income crosses Rs 1.50 lakh a year, and anyone who has not been a resident of Chandigarh for more than 3 years is not eligible. Residents of neighbouring Mohali, Panchkula or Zirakpur cannot apply to Chandigarh — they must apply under the Punjab or Haryana scheme instead.
Is there a fee to apply for the Chandigarh old age pension?
No fee is charged by the Department of Social Welfare for the pension application itself. Supporting certificates obtained through e-District, such as an income or residence certificate, carry their own notified service charge, and no agent can charge you for "getting the pension sanctioned".
How do I check my Chandigarh pension application status?
Use the "Application Status" link on chdservices.gov.in and enter the application number issued when you submitted the form. For sanctioned pensioners, the department also runs a "Life Certificate" section on chdsw.gov.in that must be kept current for payments to continue.
