What is the E-YUVA Innovation Fellows scheme?

E-YUVA (Early Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Assistance) is a programme of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a public sector enterprise set up by the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology. According to the BIRAC portal, E-YUVA aims to "promote a culture of applied research and need-oriented (societal or industry) entrepreneurial innovation among young students and researchers."

The Innovation Fellows track is the arm of E-YUVA built for post-graduates and above. E-YUVA Innovation Fellows work out of an E-YUVA Centre (EYC). A host institution, incubator or academic department that BIRAC has recognised to mentor young innovators. The centre provides laboratory space, mentorship and administrative support, while BIRAC provides the fellowship and research grant.

What an Innovation Fellow receives

• A monthly fellowship of about Rs 30,000 for post-graduate fellows and about Rs 50,000 for post-doctoral fellows.
• An annual research grant of roughly Rs 3,00,000 (PG) to Rs 5,00,000 (post-doc) to cover consumables, small equipment and project costs.
• Mentorship, incubation support and access to the BIRAC innovation ecosystem.

Who is eligible for the E-YUVA Innovation Fellows scheme?

You can apply if:

• You have completed a Master's, B.Tech, B.E., B.Pharma or higher qualification in any field of science.
• You are an Indian citizen with a genuine, application-oriented biotechnology innovation idea.
• You apply within the time window set in the guidelines; generally within 2 years of completing your qualifying degree. Women candidates are exempt from this time restriction.
• You are hosted by, or willing to work through, a recognised E-YUVA Centre.

You cannot apply if:

• You do not have a science background or the minimum qualification the current call specifies.
• You are looking for a personal scholarship or salary rather than support for a specific innovation project, E-YUVA funds the project, not a course of study.

How to apply for the E-YUVA Innovation Fellows scheme

2. Identify and contact your nearest or most relevant E-YUVA Centre (EYC) — these are hosted at universities, colleges and incubators across India.
