What is Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana?

Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana is a scholarship scheme of the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, that encourages school children to take up philately - the hobby of collecting and studying postage stamps. SPARSH stands for Scholarship for Promotion of Aptitude and Research in Stamps as a Hobby.

According to the Department of Posts, the scheme pays a scholarship of Rs 6,000 per year, released as a monthly amount of Rs 500, to selected students who combine a good academic record with a genuine interest in philately. Who is eligible for Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana?

You can be considered if the student:

• Is studying in class 6, 7, 8 or 9 in a recognised school within India.
• Has secured at least 60% marks or an equivalent grade in the previous final examination. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students get a 5% relaxation and need 55%.
• Pursues philately as a hobby - the student should have a Philately Deposit Account, or be an active member of the school's Philately Club. Where a school has no Philately Club, a child who maintains a Philately Deposit Account in the Post Office can be considered.

You cannot apply if:

• The student is below class 6 or above class 9, or is not enrolled in a recognised school.
• The student does not meet the minimum marks threshold (60%, or 55% for SC/ST).
• The student has no link to philately - neither a Philately Deposit Account nor membership of a school Philately Club.

Because each postal circle awards only 40 scholarships (10 per class), selection is competitive. Meeting the minimum criteria makes a student eligible to be evaluated, but the final award depends on comparative performance in the philately quiz and project within that circle.

How to apply for Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana

Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana does not have a single national online application form. Each postal circle issues its own notification and runs selection under the common national guidelines. Follow these steps:

1. Open a Philately Deposit Account at your Head Post Office, or join your school's Philately Club, if the student does not already have this link. This is a core eligibility condition.
2. Watch for the circle notification. The Department of Posts and each Circle Philately Bureau announce the SPARSH selection each year, usually with a closing date and details of the philately quiz.
3. Collect and fill the application form from the Circle Philately Bureau or the designated Head Post Office, attaching the mark sheet, school certificate, philately account or club proof and bank details.
4. Appear for the philately quiz and submit the project as required by the circle. Selection combines academic marks with performance in this evaluation.
5. Check the selection list published by the postal circle. Selected students receive the Rs 500 monthly stipend in their bank account for the year.

How much benefit does the scheme provide?
