What is the NEC Merit Scholarship?

The NEC Merit Scholarship: officially Financial Support to the Students of N.E.R for Higher Professional Courses, is a scholarship run by the North Eastern Council under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). It gives merit-based financial help to students from the eight North Eastern states so they can complete higher and professional education without dropping out for money reasons.

According to the scheme details published on the National Scholarship Portal, the award ranges from Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per year and is paid directly into the student's Aadhaar-seeded bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer. Annual scholarship amounts

• Diploma courses: Rs 20,000 per year
• Degree courses: Rs 22,000 per year
• Postgraduate courses: Rs 25,000 per year
• M.Phil. / Ph.D.: Rs 30,000 per year

Who is eligible for the NEC Merit Scholarship?

You can apply if:

• You are a permanent resident of one of the eight North Eastern states — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura or Sikkim.
• Your family income does not exceed Rs 8,00,000 per year.
• You scored at least 60% marks in the qualifying examination.
• You are admitted to a diploma, degree or postgraduate course, or registered for M.Phil./Ph.D., at an institute recognised by the Government.

You cannot apply if:

• Your family income is above Rs 8,00,000 a year.
• You scored below 60% in the qualifying examination.
• You are already receiving another scholarship for the same course.
• You are employed while studying.
• You are studying at an institution that is not recognised by the Government.

Selection is made on merit within the income ceiling. The scheme guidelines make clear that awards are not based on category, religion or gender. A break in the scholarship, or changing your institution or subject midway, can also make you ineligible for continued payment, so students should confirm the renewal rules with their institute before switching.

How to apply for the NEC Merit Scholarship

1. Go to the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in and complete the One-Time Registration (OTR), which needs Aadhaar and face authentication through the NSP mobile app.
2. Log in with your OTR reference number, then search for and open the NEC Merit Scholarship (Financial Support to the Students of N.E.R for Higher Professional Courses) under the Ministry of DoNER.
3. Fill in the application form with your personal, academic, income and bank details, then upload the required documents.
4. Submit the form and note the application ID for tracking.
5. Your institute verifies your details first, after which the state nodal authority does the second-level verification.
6. Once approved, the scholarship is credited to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer.

There is no fee to apply, and no agent is needed. Watch the portal's notice board every year, because the application window and renewal window open only for a fixed period.

How much benefit does the scheme provide and how is it paid?

The scholarship is an annual award of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 based on the level of your course. It is disbursed by DBT to the student's own bank account, so the account must be linked with Aadhaar for the payment to succeed. Renewal for later years of the same course is generally conditional on continued good performance and maintaining eligibility, and any break makes the student ineligible for further receipt.
