What is the Free Coaching Scheme for SCs, OBCs and PM CARES Children?

The Free Coaching for SCs, OBCs and beneficiaries of the PM CARES Children Scheme is a Central Sector scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Its purpose is to give economically disadvantaged students from Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes, and children supported under the PM CARES for Children scheme, good quality coaching for competitive examinations that they could not otherwise afford.

Who is eligible for the Free Coaching Scheme?

You can apply if:

• You belong to a Scheduled Caste or Other Backward Class, and your total family income is up to Rs 8 lakh a year; or
• You are a selected beneficiary of the PM CARES for Children scheme — in which case no income limit and no caste condition applies to you.
• You meet the educational qualification required for the examination you want to be coached for.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You are an SC or OBC student whose family income exceeds Rs 8 lakh a year (unless you qualify separately as a PM CARES beneficiary).
• You do not belong to SC or OBC and are not a PM CARES for Children beneficiary. The scheme is targeted and is not open to the general category.

How to apply for the Free Coaching Scheme

1. Check the notice board or admissions page of the specific Central University where you applied to the Dr. Ambedkar Centre of Excellence. Universities typically post a shortlist or selection list against application or roll numbers on their own website, not on socialjustice.gov.in.
2. Look for a reference or acknowledgement number given at the time of submission (physical receipt or an email/SMS acknowledgement, depending on how that university collects applications). Quote this number in any follow-up.
3. Contact the Centre of Excellence coordinator or the university's admission cell directly, by phone or in person, if no list has been published by the date the notice promised. Since there is no single toll-free helpline for this scheme, the university's own admission office is the first point of contact.
4. Contact the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation (the implementing body) if the university is unresponsive or if your query concerns eligibility as a PM CARES for Children beneficiary rather than the university's own screening.
5. Once selected, track your stipend payment through your bank account, since the Rs 4,000 monthly stipend is credited directly; a missed monthly credit is best raised with the Centre of Excellence administering your coaching, not with the bank.

Common reasons for rejection

• Family income certificate shows income above Rs 8 lakh a year. SC and OBC applicants are screened on this ceiling; if your certificate (or the income stated in it) exceeds the limit, the application is rejected outright unless you separately qualify as a PM CARES for Children beneficiary, which carries no income condition. Fix: obtain a fresh income certificate from the competent authority reflecting current, accurate family income before applying, and apply under the PM CARES route instead if you are a beneficiary of that scheme.
• Caste certificate is missing, expired, or not in the applicant's own name. Universities require a valid SC or OBC caste certificate issued by a competent authority; a certificate issued to a parent without the applicant's name endorsed, or one past its validity period (OBC non-creamy-layer certificates are commonly time-bound), gets rejected at screening. • Application submitted after the university's admission window closed. Since each Centre of Excellence announces its own admission cycle and deadline rather than following one national calendar, a late submission is rejected regardless of eligibility. Fix: monitor the specific university's own notices (not just the ministry page) once you have identified a centre, and submit well before the stated last date.
• Incomplete or mismatched documents at submission. Missing Aadhaar, absent bank passbook details, or mark sheets that do not correspond to the qualification claimed on the form lead to rejection during document verification. Fix: cross-check every document listed against the university's checklist before submission, and ensure names and details match across the caste certificate, income certificate, and Aadhaar.
