Konkani Drama Competition
Goa state government scheme
Konkani Drama Competition is an annual full-length theatre contest run by Kala Academy Goa. Registered Goan institutions pay a Rs 500 entry fee and a refundable Rs 5,000 deposit, get a free auditorium plus 80% of gate collection, and compete for a Rs 1,00,000 first prize and 15 further awards.
What is the Konkani Drama Competition?
Konkani Drama Competition is an annual full-length theatre contest organised by Kala Academy Goa, the State's principal cultural institution, under the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa. Kala Academy runs it, in the words of the scheme document, to encourage and promote theatre activity in Goa. Locally the event is known simply as the Konkani Natak Sparddha, and it is the Konkani-language counterpart of Kala Academy's older Marathi Drama Competition, which runs in two groups, 'A' and 'B'.
The competition is not a grant scheme. It is a production platform with prize money attached. An institution that enters gets a free auditorium, a transport subsidy, a share of the ticket income and a shot at prize money running to Rs 1,00,000 for the best play alone. That combination is what makes it the main annual outlet for organised Konkani theatre in the State.
Kala Academy is located on Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, Campal, Panaji. It also houses a School of Drama and a Repertory Company, so the competition sits inside a wider institutional structure for theatre rather than standing alone.
Who is eligible for the Konkani Drama Competition?
Your institution can enter if:
- It is a Goan institution registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
- Its registration has been renewed and is valid at the time of application. The scheme document specifies that only institutions "whose registration is renewed from time to time" are eligible.
- It can submit a photocopy of the renewed registration certificate with the prescribed entry form, within the stipulated period.
- It can pay the Rs 500 entry fee and furnish the Rs 5,000 refundable security deposit.
You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:
- You are an individual artiste, director or writer applying in your own name. The scheme is institution-based. Individual acting, direction, technical and script-writing prizes are awarded to people, but the entry itself must come from an institution.
- Your group is unregistered, or is registered under a statute other than the Societies Registration Act, 1860 without meeting the scheme's requirement.
- Your registration has lapsed and has not been renewed. This is the single most avoidable disqualification in the scheme, because societies routinely let annual renewals slip.
- You cannot produce the registration certificate copy within the stipulated period announced in the press note.
What does a participating institution receive?
According to the Kala Academy schemes document, participating institutions receive four distinct things.
1. Free auditorium. An auditorium with permissible infrastructure is provided free of charge, as per Kala Academy's rules. For a small Konkani theatre group this is often worth more than the prize money, because auditorium hire is the single largest fixed cost of staging a full-length play.
2. Transport reimbursement. To and fro transport charges are paid at Government rates for two vehicles, one for artistes and one for stage material, as per Kala Academy norms.
3. Eighty per cent of the gate collection. Admission to each show is ticketed at Rs 50, and the participating institution receives 80% of the gate collection from the sale of tickets for its own show. Kala Academy retains the balance.
4. Prize money decided by a panel of judges.
| Award | Amount |
|---|---|
| 1st Prize (play) | Rs 1,00,000 |
| 2nd Prize (play) | Rs 75,000 |
| 3rd Prize (play) | Rs 50,000 |
| 2 Consolation Prizes (if more than 10 performances) | Rs 25,000 each |
| Direction to 1st / 2nd / 3rd | Rs 10,000 / Rs 7,000 / Rs 5,000 |
| Acting, Male to 1st / 2nd | Rs 7,000 / Rs 5,000 |
| Acting, Female β 1st / 2nd | Rs 7,000 / Rs 5,000 |
| Stage Design or Setting | Rs 5,000 |
| Lighting | Rs 5,000 |
| Costumes | Rs 5,000 |
| Background Music | Rs 5,000 |
| Make-up | Rs 5,000 |
| Script Writing to 1st / 2nd | Rs 10,000 / Rs 7,000 |
| Translated or adapted script | Rs 10,000 |
The consolation prizes are conditional: they are given subject to more than 10 performances being staged in that year's competition. In a thin year with fewer entries, those two Rs 25,000 awards are simply not given.

How to apply for the Konkani Drama Competition
- Watch the local dailies for the annual press note. Kala Academy invites entries by releasing press notes in local newspapers. There is no standing application window, so the press note is the trigger for the whole cycle.
- Renew your society's registration first, if it is due. The renewed registration certificate is the one document that decides eligibility, and it cannot be produced at short notice.
- Obtain the prescribed entry form from Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, or from the Kala Academy website, where rule copies and entry forms for the Konkani Drama Competition are published each season.
- Fill in the entry form completely and attach the photocopy of the renewed registration certificate.
- Pay the Rs 500 entry fee and furnish the Rs 5,000 refundable security deposit along with the form.
- Submit the complete application to the Member Secretary, Kala Academy, Goa, within the stipulated period.
- Ask for a receipt or acknowledgement carrying the date and time of submission. Keep it; it is your only proof that the entry was filed in time.
How is the competition judged and the money paid?
Prizes are awarded by a panel of judges appointed by Kala Academy, as per the scheme details. The scheme document does not publish a marking scheme, so the practical position is that the jury's assessment of the performances staged in that edition governs the awards.
The gate collection share and the transport hire charges are settled by Kala Academy after the show, against the norms it applies to all participating institutions. The refundable security deposit is returned separately once the Academy is satisfied that the institution completed its performance and left the auditorium and its equipment in order.
Why do entries get rejected or run into trouble?
- Registration certificate not renewed. The scheme is explicit that only institutions with registration renewed from time to time are eligible.
- Entry form submitted after the stipulated period. The window is set by the press note for that edition and is not extended informally.
- Registration certificate copy missing from the application, even where the society is in fact registered.
- Entry fee or security deposit not furnished with the form. Both are part of the application, not a later formality.
- Individual applying instead of an institution. Only registered institutions can enter, however strong the production.
Where do I complain?
The Member Secretary or the Chairman, Kala Academy, Goa is the named authority for redressal of grievances under this scheme. Kala Academy can be reached at Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, Campal, Panaji 403001, on 0832-2420450, 0832-2420451, 0832-2420452 and 0832-2420453.
Above Kala Academy sits the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, which is the administrative department and the escalation route where the Academy's response is unsatisfactory.
Practical points before you enter
- The deposit is refundable, the entry fee is not. Budget Rs 500 as a sunk cost and Rs 5,000 as working capital tied up for the season.
- Count on the gate, not only the prize. Eighty per cent of a ticketed house at Rs 50 a seat is real money for a group that can fill an auditorium, and it is paid whether or not the play places.
- The consolation prizes depend on the field. If fewer than 11 performances are staged, the two Rs 25,000 consolation awards do not arise at all.
- Technical categories are worth entering deliberately. Stage design, lighting, costumes, background music and make-up carry Rs 5,000 each, and a production that is strong technically can recover a good part of its costs even without winning the main award.
- The Marathi Drama Competition is a separate scheme. It runs in 'A' and 'B' groups with its own prize table and a separate entry. Do not assume one entry covers both.
How to check your application status
There is no online tracker or portal login for the Konkani Drama Competition. Kala Academy Goa runs the whole cycle, from entry to result, on paper and through direct contact, so checking status means following up with the Academy itself rather than logging into a website.
Confirm your entry was received. The acknowledgement or receipt you collected when you submitted the entry form is your proof of filing. If Kala Academy has not sent any written confirmation of acceptance within a reasonable time after the closing date, call the Academy rather than assume the entry is in.
Call the Kala Academy office directly. Use 0832-2420450, 0832-2420451, 0832-2420452 or 0832-2420453 and ask the office, or the Member Secretary's section, whether your institution's entry has been accepted and where it stands in the performance schedule for that year's competition.
Watch for the performance schedule. Once entries close, Kala Academy draws up a schedule of which institution performs on which date at the auditorium. This schedule, not a status page, is the practical signal that your entry has been accepted and slotted in. It is usually communicated to participating institutions directly and may also appear in local dailies alongside the original press note.
Track the refundable security deposit separately. The Rs 5,000 deposit is returned after your institution's performance is over and the Academy is satisfied the auditorium and equipment were left in order. If the refund has not come through a reasonable interval after your show, follow up with the Member Secretary's office by phone or in person at Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, quoting your entry details and the date of performance.
Check results and prize announcements the same way. Kala Academy announces the panel of judges' results after all entries in that edition have performed. These are typically announced at the Academy or reported in local newspapers rather than posted to a dedicated results page, so an institution that wants firm confirmation of an award should confirm directly with the Academy office.
Escalate to the Directorate of Art and Culture if the Academy is unresponsive. If calls to Kala Academy do not resolve a status query, such as a missing acknowledgement, an unexplained delay in the deposit refund, or no word on the performance schedule, the matter can be raised with the Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa, at Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji, which sits above Kala Academy in the administrative structure for this scheme.
