Konkani Song & Music Awards (Tiatr Kantaram)
Goa state government scheme
Konkani Song & Music Awards (Tiatr Kantaram) is a Tiatr Academy of Goa scheme giving cash awards of Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000 across twelve categories for Konkani tiatr song albums released between 1 January and 31 December of the identified year. Albums need at least 8 kantaram and entries are filed offline at Campal, Panaji.
What are the Konkani Song & Music Awards (Tiatr Kantaram)?
Konkani Song & Music Awards, commonly known by the Konkani term Tiatr Kantaram, is a scheme of the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) under the Art, Culture and Museums Department, Government of Goa. The scheme encourages producers, lyricists, singers and musicians who invest significant amounts of money to produce Konkani audio compact disc, video compact disc, digital versatile disc and digital albums of Konkani tiatr songs. Its ultimate purpose is to encourage qualitative album production so as to enrich Konkani kantar.
Awards are presented every year by the Tiatr Academy of Goa across twelve categories, with cash prizes ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000. Entries are judged by a panel of eminent personalities experienced in song and music, selected by TAG, and the judges' decision is final and binding.
What are the award categories and amounts?
| Category | Award |
|---|---|
| Male singer of the year (solo) | Rs 10,000 |
| Female singer of the year (solo) | Rs 10,000 |
| Child male singer of the year (solo) | Rs 5,000 |
| Child female singer of the year (solo) | Rs 5,000 |
| Duet of the year (lyrics must be interactive) | Rs 10,000 |
| Duo of the year (lyrics must be interactive) | Rs 10,000 |
| Trio of the year (lyrics must be interactive) | Rs 15,000 |
| Quartet of the year (lyrics must be interactive) | Rs 20,000 |
| Choral song of the year | Rs 20,000 |
| Lyricist of the year | Rs 10,000 |
| Music composer of the year | Rs 10,000 |
| Best Konkani kantaram audio album of the year | Rs 30,000 |
The interactive lyrics requirement applies specifically to the duet, duo, trio and quartet categories. A group rendition where the singers sing the same lines together, rather than in exchange, does not meet the category definition however well performed.
Who is eligible for the Tiatr Kantaram awards?
You can apply if:
- You produced a Konkani audio CD, VCD, DVD or digital album between 1 January and 31 December of the year identified by the Tiatr Academy of Goa.
- The music director is compulsorily a Goan or of Goan origin.
- The singers in the album are Goans whose mother tongue is Konkani.
- The album contains songs only in the Konkani language.
- The album consists of a minimum of 8 Konkani kantaram.
- The songs are not old songs or remixes of old songs.
- There are no adverse remarks in any form against any government, individual or institution, or against caste, creed and religion, in the lyrics, performances or speeches.
You are not eligible if:
- Your album carries songs in English, Hindi, Portuguese or any language other than Konkani. A mixed-language album cannot apply.
- Your music director is not Goan or of Goan origin, or your singers are not Goans whose mother tongue is Konkani.
- Your album carries fewer than 8 Konkani kantaram.
- Your album consists of old songs or remixes of old songs.
- Your album was released outside the 1 January to 31 December window of the year identified by TAG.
- Your lyrics or performances contain adverse remarks of the kind the scheme prohibits.
Competition requirements
- A minimum of three entries must be received in a category for the competition in that category to be held. With two entries, that category is simply not run in that year.
- For the Best Album award, the album must contain at least 5 kantaram from the specified categories: one solo, one duet with interactive lyrics, one duo with interactive lyrics, one trio with interactive lyrics, one quartet or quintet with interactive lyrics, and one choral song.
Child singer category: a child singer must not have completed 16 years of age on or before 31 December of the year identified by the Tiatr Academy of Goa.
The three-entry rule is worth planning around. Producers working in the smaller categories, such as trio and quartet, can find the award not given in a year simply because too few albums carried a qualifying track.
What documents are required?
At the application stage
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-attested copy of Aadhaar card | Yes | Of the applicant |
| Self-attested copy of PAN card | Yes | Of the applicant |
| Four audio compact discs | Yes | For the panel of judges |
| Three typed copies of lyrics in Konkani in Roman script | Yes | For Lyricist of the Year consideration |
| Proof of album release date | Conditional | Only if the date is not printed on the cover |
For the child singer category
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Self-attested copies of birth certificate or baptism certificate | Yes | To establish the age on 31 December |
| Certificate by the Headmaster or Headmistress of a recognised school certifying the date of birth | Yes | Original should be produced for verification |
The child singer category asks for both an identity document and a school certificate, and the original of the school certificate has to be available for verification. Producers entering a child singer should sort this out before the entry rather than after the shortlist.
How to apply for the Konkani Song & Music Awards
- Take a printout of the prescribed format of the application form from the Tiatr Academy of Goa Citizen's Charter published on goa.gov.in, or visit the TAG office to collect the prescribed form.
- Fill in all the mandatory fields, attach self-attested copies of all the mandatory documents, sign the form and mention the date.
- Attach four audio compact discs of the album, three typed copies of the lyrics in Konkani in Roman script, and self-attested copies of the Aadhaar card and PAN card. Add proof of the album release date if the date is not printed on the cover, and the birth or baptism certificate plus the school certificate for any child singer entry.
- Submit the duly filled and signed application form along with the documents to Tiatr Academy of Goa, AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001.
- Keep a copy of the submitted application form and the acknowledgement.
How entries are judged
- The submitted audio CD, VCD, DVD or digital albums are judged by a panel of judges comprising eminent personalities experienced in song and music, selected by the Tiatr Academy of Goa.
- The Tiatr Academy of Goa announces the winners and presents the cash awards in the respective categories annually.
- The judges' decision is final and binding on all participants.
Key dates
Two dates define the scheme. The first is the production window, 1 January to 31 December of the year identified by TAG, which decides whether an album is eligible at all. The second is the cut-off of 31 December for the child singer age test, which is measured on the same day.
The entry date for each edition is announced by the Tiatr Academy of Goa rather than fixed permanently in the scheme note, so producers should watch TAG announcements at the end of the qualifying year. Keeping the release date printed on the album cover removes the need for separate release-date proof at entry.
Why entries are rejected
- Album released outside the qualifying calendar year.
- Fewer than 8 Konkani kantaram on the album.
- Songs in a language other than Konkani anywhere on the album.
- Old songs or remixes, which the scheme excludes outright.
- Music director not Goan or of Goan origin, or singers not Goans with Konkani as mother tongue.
- Group category entered without interactive lyrics in the duet, duo, trio or quartet.
- Best Album entry missing one of the 5 required kantaram types.
- Fewer than four audio compact discs submitted, so the panel cannot be supplied.
- Lyrics not submitted in three typed copies in Roman script, which forfeits the Lyricist of the Year consideration.
- Child singer over 16 on 31 December, or age documents missing.
- Adverse remarks in the lyrics against a government, individual, institution, caste, creed or religion.
Where to apply and get help
Tiatr Academy of Goa, AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001. The scheme note, category list and prescribed application format are published in the TAG Citizen's Charter on goa.gov.in, and the form is also available at the office. There is no entry fee.
How to check your application status
The Tiatr Kantaram scheme is an offline, paper-based competition run by the Tiatr Academy of Goa, and it has no online portal, tracking number or SMS system for checking where an entry stands. There is no login-based dashboard to visit, because the application itself is a physical form and a set of audio CDs handed in at the counter, not a digital submission.
Because of this, an applicant's status check has to happen through direct, offline follow-up rather than a website:
- Keep the acknowledgement from submission. When the filled form and documents (the four audio CDs, the three typed copies of lyrics, the Aadhaar and PAN copies, and any child-singer documents) are handed in at the Tiatr Academy of Goa office, ask for and retain a signed or stamped acknowledgement of receipt. This is the only proof that an entry was actually received, and it is what the office will ask for if there is a dispute later.
- Visit or call the Tiatr Academy of Goa office directly at AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001, to ask whether the entry has been logged and forwarded to the judging panel. Since the scheme note does not list a dedicated helpline number, a written query or an in-person visit to this office is the reliable route rather than a phone call to a number that is not published.
- Watch for the panel's judging timeline. Once entries close for a qualifying year, the Tiatr Academy of Goa convenes a panel of judges to review the submitted CDs, VCDs, DVDs or digital albums category by category. There is no interim status update during this judging stage, since the judges' review happens internally and the decision is disclosed only at the end.
- Track the announcement of results, which is how every applicant ultimately learns their status. The Tiatr Academy of Goa announces winners and presents the cash awards in each category annually, and this announcement functions as the de facto status update for every entry, not just the winning ones. Applicants who do not hear from TAG by the time an edition's results are announced should treat that as the moment to follow up with the office, since a category may also simply not be held that year if fewer than three entries were received in it.
- Reconfirm bank or payment details if selected. Since the scheme note does not specify a separate disbursal-tracking step, a winning applicant's practical status check after the announcement is to confirm with the Tiatr Academy of Goa office how and when the cash award will be paid out, rather than expecting an automated payment notification.
