What is the Gujarat State Gaurav Puraskar for artists?

Gujarat State Gaurav Puraskar is the state's honour for artists of eminence in the performing arts, conferred by the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Academy (Gujarat Rajya Sangeet Natak Akademi). The Academy functions under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat, and has been an autonomous body since 1 September 1992, when the state government gave it autonomy so that experts, artists and craftspeople in music, dance, drama and folk arts could shape the field's development through an independent institution rather than a government branch.

The Academy lists the Gaurav Puraskar among its standing annual activities, alongside the Pandit Omkarnath classical music festival, the Tanariri classical music festival, the bhakti sangeet and folk dance festivals, the state one-act and three-act drama competitions, the World Theatre Day drama festival, the Bhavai sammelan, the guru-shishya parampara training in music, dance, folk dance and drama, and the assistance scheme for talented plays and directors.

What does the award recognise?

The Gaurav Puraskar recognises a body of work over a career, not a single performance. The Academy's published citations make the standard visible:

• Natya kshetra (drama); awardees include Dipti Subhash Brahmbhatt (Joshi), cited for roles in Manvini Bhavai, Doll's House, Muktadhara and Jalka; Suman Hiralal Shah, a painter and theatre director who completed 75 years in the arts; and Kaushik Dayabhai Sindhav, cited for 55 years across radio, television and stage, some 80 to 90 plays, direction of 11 plays and over 450 radio performances, and an All India Radio Grade "A" award in 1997.
• Sangeet kshetra (music); awardees include Deepak Shantikumar Raja, a sitar and surbahar scholar with roughly 100 published articles on Indian music and a senior fellowship awarded in 2009; Aarti Saumil Munshi, a sugam sangeet singer with about 4,000 programmes in India and abroad; and Pandit Divyang Vakil, a tabla teacher of 35 years whose institutions run Indian music teaching at 19 centres across 4 American states.

Who is eligible, and who is not eligible?

An artist can be considered if:

• The artist works in music, dance, drama or folk arts. The Academy's stated fields of sangeet, nritya, natya and lok-kala.
• The artist has a long and substantial record of work connected with Gujarat, whether as a performer, director, teacher or scholar of the form.
• The artist's contribution can be documented — performances, productions, recordings, broadcasts, publications, students taught.

An artist is not eligible if:

• The work lies outside the performing arts. A painter or sculptor should look to the Gujarat Lalit Kala Academy, and a writer to the Gujarat Sahitya Academy; both are separate autonomous bodies of the same department.
• The record is early-career. This is a lifetime-contribution honour, and a young artist is better served by the Academy's competitions, training camps and guru-shishya parampara scheme.
• The applicant is seeking welfare support rather than recognition. An artist in economic distress should apply instead under the Commissionerate's assistance scheme for helpless artists.

This is a selection-based honour, not an entitlement. A strong record does not create a right to the award in any given year.

How to apply or submit a nomination for the Gaurav Puraskar

1. Contact the Academy first. Ask the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Academy, Block 14, 2nd Floor, Dr Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Sector 10-A, Gandhinagar 382010, telephone 079-23254552 / 079-23251693, whether nominations are open for the current year and in which fields.
2. Obtain the prescribed nomination form for the year from the Academy.
3. Prepare a full biodata of the artist, field of art, years active, gurus and gharana, institutions and troupes worked with, notable productions or concerts, teaching record, publications and recordings.
4. Attach the evidence: programme records, press cuttings, photographs, recordings, broadcast credits, and a list of honours already received.
5. Submit the nomination to the Academy at Gandhinagar, addressed to the Member Secretary, and take a dated acknowledgement.
6. Follow up before the selection cycle closes, quoting the acknowledgement, and be ready to supply any additional material the Academy asks for.

How do you check the status of a nomination?

The Academy is headed by a Chairman and a Member Secretary, both listed on its contacts page, and it publishes awardee citations on its Awards page once the selection is announced, that page is the effective public record of who has been honoured.

Why are nominations unsuccessful, and how do you strengthen them?

• Thin documentation. A career summary with no supporting record is hard to assess. Attach programme material, cuttings and recordings.
• Wrong academy. Fine art and literature nominations belong with the Lalit Kala and Sahitya academies, not the Sangeet Natak Academy.
• Filed outside the cycle. The award is annual; a nomination received after the selection has been made waits for the next round.
• No independent corroboration. Letters from institutions, akademis, troupes or established artists carry weight that a self-description does not.
