What is the 1,000 broiler bird unit scheme?

The Assistance for Establishment of 1000 Broiler Bird Unit is a scheme of the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, under the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat. Its stated aim is to give supplementary employment to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and General category families by helping them set up a commercial broiler shed of 1,000 birds.

This is the largest of the Directorate's poultry schemes. The smaller ones are a 25-bird backyard unit with a training stipend for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and economically weaker section families, a 40-bird unit for Divyang people, and a 100 broiler bird unit for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families. Older listings showed the 1,000-bird unit only inside a combined Scheduled Tribe package with the 25-bird unit; the Directorate's current page lists it as its own scheme, open to all three categories.

How much does the scheme pay?

Category Assistance Repeat rule
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe 90 per cent of the unit cost, up to Rs 8,15,000 One member of a family, once in a lifetime
General category 75 per cent of the unit cost, up to Rs 6,79,500 One member of a family, once in a lifetime

The assistance is paid as money into your bank account by direct benefit transfer, not as birds or equipment in kind.

Even at 90 per cent, you still fund the rest of the shed and the working capital for feed, chicks and medicines in each cycle. On a 1,000-bird unit that is a real sum, so plan it before you apply.

Who is eligible?

You can apply if:

  • You live in Gujarat and belong to a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or the General category, with a valid caste certificate where you claim SC or ST.
  • You have taken poultry farming training from a recognised institution.
  • You can show land for the shed: owned, inherited or possessed land with the 7/12 and 8-A records, or a lease of at least 5 years.
  • No member of your family has already received help under this or a similar government scheme.

You cannot apply if:

  • You have no poultry training.
  • You have no land and no lease of at least 5 years.
  • Someone in your family has already taken this or a similar benefit.
  • You live outside Gujarat.

How to apply

  1. Finish poultry farming training and keep the certificate.
  2. Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in when the animal husbandry application window is open, and register with your Aadhaar number and mobile number.
  3. Choose the 1,000 broiler bird unit component and fill in the form.
  4. Upload the documents on iKhedut with the printout of the application, or take the printout and documents to the office address shown in the application within 7 days.
  5. Applications are checked for eligibility on iKhedut. Based on the number of eligible applications and the physical target of each district, the component officer gives preliminary approval, following the procedure set by the Director of Animal Husbandry.
  6. After the shed is built and verified, the assistance is paid by DBT.

How to check your application status

Log in to ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and open the Applicant Corner with your application number and mobile number. If the application shows eligible but not approved, the district target for the year is usually the reason. Ask at the district animal husbandry office or District Poultry Extension Centre.

Why applications get rejected

  • No training certificate, or training not from a recognised institution.
  • No land record, or a lease shorter than 5 years.
  • Another family member has already had the same or a similar benefit.
  • Documents not submitted within 7 days of the online application.
  • Caste certificate or bank details do not match the Aadhaar name.
  • District target exhausted for the year.

Where to get help

  • District Poultry Extension Centre or Intensive Poultry Development Project, for training and practical advice.
  • District animal husbandry office, for application status.
  • Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Gandhinagar (doah.gujarat.gov.in), for the scheme rules. Phone (079) 23256141.
  • iKhedut Applicant Corner, for portal and login problems.

Broiler farming runs on thin margins, and bird prices and disease can swing a cycle from profit to loss. Line up a buyer or an integrator before building the shed.
