What is the Private Tuition Assistance scheme for SEBC science students?

Private Tuition Assistance to Socially and Educationally Backward Class Students Studying in Science Stream of Class 11 & 12 is a scholarship scheme of the Social Justice and Empowerment Department, Government of Gujarat, administered through the Directorate of Developing Castes Welfare. The scheme pays a fixed grant towards the cost of private tuition for SEBC students taking science in higher secondary school.

The scheme addresses a specific and well-known gap. Science in Class 11 and 12 in Gujarat is effectively a two-track system: school teaching plus paid coaching, and the coaching half is what decides board performance and NEET or JEE outcomes for most students. Families in the SEBC category with modest incomes routinely cannot pay for that second track, and their children fall behind classmates of equal ability. Private Tuition Assistance puts Rs 15,000 per academic year into that gap.

The grant is Rs 15,000 for Class 11 and Rs 15,000 for Class 12; Rs 30,000 in total across the two years of higher secondary science. It is paid to the student, not to the tuition provider, and it is claimed one class at a time.

Who is eligible for the tuition assistance?

You can apply if:

• You are a permanent resident of Gujarat.
• You belong to the Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) and hold a valid caste certificate from the competent authority.
• You are studying in the science stream in Class 11 or Class 12 at a recognised higher secondary school.
• You are availing private tuition during the academic year you are claiming for, and can produce the fee receipt.
• Your annual family income does not exceed Rs 6,00,000.

You are not eligible if:

• You are studying commerce, arts or a vocational stream. The scheme is restricted to science.
• You belong to the General, Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe category. SC and ST students have their own separate scholarship schemes under the same department; this one is specific to SEBC.
• Your family income is above Rs 6,00,000 a year.
• You are not a permanent resident of Gujarat.
• You are in Class 9, Class 10 or a college course. The scheme covers only Class 11 and Class 12.
• You did not actually take private tuition and cannot produce a fee receipt.
• You are studying in a school that is not recognised.

How much assistance is given?

The grant is per class, not a single lump sum. A student who takes the Rs 15,000 in Class 11 must file a fresh application in Class 12 to receive the second instalment; there is no automatic renewal, and the Class 12 application needs its own fee receipt and its own Class 11 mark sheet.

How to apply for the Private Tuition Assistance scheme

The application is filed online on the Digital Gujarat portal. Registration comes first, then profile completion, then the scholarship form.

1. Open digitalgujarat.gov.in and click Register on the home page to open the registration form.
2. Enter your mobile number and email, set a password, and click Save.
3. Log in with your username, your mobile number or email, and the password you set.
4. Open My Profile and fill in every mandatory field, then click Update Profile. The profile is saved only after you enter the OTP sent to your registered number.
5. Go to Services and choose Scholarship Services, then open the scheme group under which the Developing Castes Welfare scholarships are listed.
6. Select the financial year you are applying for and click Change Financial Year. Applying under the wrong year is a common and avoidable error.
7. Select this scheme, read the instructions on the screen carefully, and click Continue to Service.
8. Fill the application form completely and upload the documents: caste certificate, income certificate, tuition fee receipt, last year's mark sheet, bank passbook or cancelled cheque, and your photograph. Photo upload is mandatory.
9. Click Save as Draft, review everything, then accept the terms and conditions and submit using Confirm & Final Submit.
10. Hand the application to your institution. Students studying inside Gujarat cannot submit directly as individuals — the form goes through the school. Gujarat students studying outside the state submit their form to their native district officer.

Digital Gujarat publishes a user manual for the Common Scholarship Portal in both English and Gujarati, linked from the portal's download section, and it is worth opening before you start rather than after a rejection.

What the rules say you must get right

The scheme's own instructions carry warnings that decide a large share of rejections:

• Photo upload is mandatory for every applicant.
• The application is treated as complete only when all sections are filled. A half-filled form sitting in draft is not an application.
• Only one application per applicant is acceptable. Submitting more than one, from the same institute or from different institutions, causes all of the student's applications to be rejected, and no request against that is entertained.
• Wrong or misleading information in the application leads to rejection by the department authorities.
• Documents must be scanned as instructed. Unreadable uploads are grounds for the competent authority to reject the application, and a phone photograph of a crumpled certificate is exactly the sort of upload that fails.
• The institution cannot be changed once the application is successfully submitted, so fill the school details carefully.
• Direct individual submission is not accepted for students studying inside Gujarat.

How to check your application status

Log in to digitalgujarat.gov.in with the same mobile number or email you registered, open Scholarship Services, and view your submitted applications for the selected financial year. The status moves through submission, institutional verification and departmental approval before payment is credited to the bank account you supplied.

Two habits save trouble. First, keep the application number shown after final submission: every follow-up needs it. Second, check that the bank account you entered is in the student's own name and active; a dormant or closed account is a frequent reason a sanctioned amount does not arrive.

Why applications get rejected, and how to fix them

• Duplicate applications, the fastest route to losing the year entirely.
• Illegible scans of the caste or income certificate.
• Income certificate above Rs 6,00,000, or one that has expired.
• Caste certificate in the wrong category. A General or SC certificate cannot be used for an SEBC scheme.
• No tuition fee receipt, or a receipt from a different academic year.
• Wrong financial year selected before opening the form.
• Application not forwarded by the institution. This is not the student's error to fix alone; follow up with the school clerk handling scholarships.
• Bank details mismatched with the student's name.

Where a document is the problem, the practical fix is to obtain a fresh certificate from the Mamlatdar or the competent authority and reapply in the next open window, since Digital Gujarat does not allow edits after final submission.

Applying is free at every stage. No agent, tuition class or middleman can charge a fee to file this application or to "arrange" the sanction.
