Scheme of Providing Assistance to Encourage Farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming
Gujarat state government scheme
Scheme of Providing Assistance to Encourage Farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming is a Gujarat scheme that pays 75 per cent of GOPCA certification and registration fees up to Rs 2,000 per hectare, Rs 5,000 per hectare for organic inputs and up to Rs 1,000 per sample for residue testing. Farmers apply online on the iKhedut portal.
What is the organic farming adoption assistance scheme?
Scheme of Providing Assistance to Encourage Farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming is a state scheme of the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat, delivered through the Directorate of Agriculture and applied for on the department's single-window portal, iKhedut. The scheme exists to remove the specific cash barriers that stop a farmer from converting to certified organic cultivation.
Organic farming in India fails commercially far more often on paperwork than on agronomy. A farmer can stop using chemical fertiliser and pesticide tomorrow, but until the plot carries a recognised organic certificate the produce sells at the ordinary mandi rate, not the organic premium. Certification costs money, takes a conversion period, and needs residue tests to demonstrate that the soil and produce are actually clean. Scheme of Providing Assistance to Encourage Farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming pays a share of exactly those three costs.
What the scheme funds
- 75 per cent of the GOPCA certification and registration fee, subject to a ceiling of Rs 2,000 per hectare.
- Rs 5,000 per hectare towards organic inputs on certified area, organic manure, bio-fertiliser, vermicompost and bio-pesticides.
- Up to Rs 1,000 per sample towards residue testing charges.
GOPCA is the Gujarat Organic Products Certification Agency, the state's own certification body. Using GOPCA is what links this scheme to a verifiable certificate rather than a self-declaration.
Main features
- Assistance is per hectare, so the area recorded in the 7/12 and 8-A land records directly determines what you receive.
- Both individual farmers and farmer groups can apply, which matters because organic certification is often cheaper per farmer when done as a cluster.
- Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the farmer's own bank account.
- Applications are taken only on iKhedut, ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in.
- Assistance is a reimbursement against receipts, not an advance.
Who is eligible for organic farming assistance in Gujarat?
A farmer can apply if all of the following are true:
- The applicant is a permanent resident of Gujarat.
- The applicant holds agricultural land in Gujarat recorded in his or her own name in the village form 7/12 and the 8-A holding record.
- The applicant is adopting organic farming on that land and is registering for, or already holds, organic certification through GOPCA or a recognised certification agency.
- The applicant has an Aadhaar number and a bank account in the same name capable of receiving Direct Benefit Transfer.
- The applicant can produce fee receipts and laboratory invoices for the components being claimed.
Farmer groups, producer groups, farmer clubs and Farmer Producer Organisations operating in Gujarat, are also eligible, and group certification is usually the cheaper route per member.
Who cannot apply or is not eligible
- Residents of other states cannot apply, even where they lease land in Gujarat.
- A person with no land record in his or her own name cannot apply, because the per-hectare calculation is anchored to the 7/12 and 8-A records. Pure tenant cultivators without a recorded interest are not eligible under this component.
- A farmer practising organic methods but not registered for certification cannot claim the Rs 5,000 per hectare input assistance, since that component is tied to certified area.
- Applications made outside an announced iKhedut window are not eligible, the component simply does not appear on the portal menu when the window is shut.
- A farmer who has already drawn the same component for the same land in the same period cannot claim it twice.
- Claims without receipts are not eligible. Reimbursement schemes need proof of the expenditure, and a certificate alone is not proof that the fee was paid.
Note what is not a bar. There is no published income limit and no minimum holding size for this component. A very small holding simply draws a proportionately smaller per-hectare amount.
How much benefit does the scheme provide?
| Component | Rate | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| GOPCA certification and registration fee | 75 per cent of the fee | Rs 2,000 per hectare |
| Organic inputs on certified area | Flat assistance | Rs 5,000 per hectare |
| Residue testing | Cost of the test | Rs 1,000 per sample |
A worked example makes the arithmetic clear. A farmer with 2 hectares under certification who pays a GOPCA fee of Rs 6,000 can claim 75 per cent of that fee, Rs 4,500, against a ceiling of Rs 2,000 per hectare for 2 hectares, which is Rs 4,000 — so Rs 4,000 is released, the ceiling being the binding figure. The same farmer can separately claim Rs 10,000 for inputs at Rs 5,000 per hectare on 2 hectares, and Rs 1,000 for one residue test sample.
Each component is claimed and released separately, and each is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer after the Taluka Agriculture Office verifies the supporting documents.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identity and DBT seeding |
| 7/12 and 8-A land records | Yes | Fix the certified area in hectares |
| Bank passbook or cancelled cheque | Yes | Name and IFSC must match the land record |
| Organic certification or GOPCA registration | Yes | The document the input component is tied to |
| Certification and registration fee receipts | Yes | Reimbursement is against fees actually paid |
| Residue testing report and invoice | Only for that component | Up to Rs 1,000 per sample |
| Caste certificate | Only for sub-plan components | Where a different rate applies |
| Joint holder consent | If land is jointly held | Consent of other 8-A holders |
Keep originals of every fee receipt. Photocopies are accepted for the file, but the Taluka Agriculture Office routinely asks to see the original at verification, and a lost receipt is the most common reason a certification claim is held back.
How to apply for the organic farming assistance scheme
- Open the official portal at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and go to Schemes, then Agricultural Schemes (Khetivadi).
- Check whether the organic farming assistance component shows as open. If the window is closed the component will not accept an application, and you must wait for the next announced window.
- Click Apply against the component, then answer whether you are a registered applicant. A first-time user selects "not registered" and completes a fresh registration using an Aadhaar number and a mobile number for OTP verification.
- Fill the application form with your personal details, village, taluka and district, survey number, area under organic cultivation in hectares, certification details and bank account number with IFSC.
- Submit the application and note the application number shown on screen.
- Confirm the application. iKhedut treats submission and confirmation as two separate steps, and an unconfirmed application is never forwarded to the Taluka Agriculture Office. This single step defeats a large number of first-time applicants every year.
- Print the confirmed application, sign it, attach self-attested copies of the 7/12 and 8-A, Aadhaar card, bank passbook, certification record and fee receipts, and submit the set to your Taluka Agriculture Office within the days stated on the printout.
- Wait for the sanction order, then submit the final receipts and certification documents for verification so the subsidy can be released to your bank account.
How to apply with assistance offline
- Visit a Village Computer Entrepreneur (VCE) at your Gram Panchayat, a Common Service Centre, or the Taluka Agriculture Office with your Aadhaar card, 7/12 and 8-A, bank passbook and certification papers. iKhedut has no paper-first route: every application must be entered online by someone.
- Have the operator complete the online form in your presence, and collect the printout carrying the application number before you leave.
- Submit the signed printout with attachments at the Taluka Agriculture Office and take a stamped receiving acknowledgement.
How do I check my application status?
- Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and go to the Applicant Corner.
- Select Check application status.
- Enter your application number and the mobile number you registered.
- Use the same corner to reprint the application or upload pending documents against a submitted application.
If the status stays at "submitted" and never moves to "confirmed", the confirmation step was missed. Such an application does not progress, and the only remedy is to file again in the next open window.
Why do organic farming assistance applications get rejected?
- Application not confirmed on iKhedut after submission.
- Hard copy not submitted to the Taluka Agriculture Office within the allowed days.
- Area mismatch between the hectares claimed in the application and the area shown in the 8-A record or the certification document.
- Certification not in place for the area on which input assistance is claimed.
- Fee receipts missing, so the reimbursement cannot be quantified.
- Bank details mismatched. A passbook name that differs from the Aadhaar name, or a wrong IFSC, which stops the transfer even after sanction.
- Component budget exhausted for the financial year, which produces a rejection unrelated to the applicant's merits. Reapply in the next window.
Key dates and the application window
Scheme of Providing Assistance to Encourage Farmers for Adoption of Organic Farming is not open every day of the year. The Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department opens components on iKhedut once the annual allocation is released, and closes each component when the district target is met. A window can open and close within a few weeks and there is no late submission facility, so watch the news and circulars section of ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and get your 7/12, 8-A and certification papers ready before the window opens rather than after.
Where do I raise a grievance?
- Taluka Agriculture Office, the first stop, because the physical file sits there through verification and sanction.
- District Agriculture Officer for delays and for budget-related deferrals.
- iKhedut public contacts page on the portal, which lists the correct officer for each district.
- Directorate of Agriculture, Gujarat, Krishi Bhavan, Sector 10-A, Gandhinagar, for state-level escalation.
- iKhedut helpdesk for technical faults such as a form that will not confirm or an OTP that does not arrive.
Applying on iKhedut is free. No agent can guarantee sanction of an organic farming subsidy, no officer is entitled to a payment for processing the file, and no one from the department will ask you for your bank OTP.

Frequently asked questions
How much assistance does the organic farming scheme give in Gujarat?
The scheme reimburses 75 per cent of the GOPCA certification and registration fee subject to a ceiling of Rs 2,000 per hectare, gives Rs 5,000 per hectare towards organic inputs on certified area, and pays up to Rs 1,000 per sample for residue testing. The components are claimed separately.
Who can apply for organic farming assistance in Gujarat?
Individual farmers and farmer groups resident in Gujarat who hold agricultural land and are moving to certified organic farming can apply. The land must be recorded in the applicant's name in the 7/12 and 8-A records, because the assistance is calculated per hectare.
What is GOPCA?
GOPCA is the Gujarat Organic Products Certification Agency, the state's own organic certification body under the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department. The certification and registration fee this scheme reimburses is the fee charged for GOPCA certification of the farmer's plot.
Is certification compulsory to get the input assistance?
Yes, for the per-hectare input assistance. The Rs 5,000 per hectare component is tied to certified organic area, so a farmer who is practising organic methods but has not registered for certification cannot claim it. That is why the scheme funds the certification fee itself as a first step.
Where do I apply for this scheme?
Apply online at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in during an open application window, then print the confirmed application, sign it and submit it with the supporting documents to your Taluka Agriculture Office.
Is the iKhedut portal open all year for organic farming assistance?
No. iKhedut opens component-wise application windows announced by the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, and each window runs for a limited number of days until the district target is filled. Applications outside a window are not accepted.
Do I get the money before or after paying the certification fee?
After. Assistance under this scheme is a reimbursement paid against receipts and certification records, credited by Direct Benefit Transfer. The farmer pays the certification agency and the input supplier first and claims afterwards.
How is this different from the State Organic Policy scheme?
The two overlap heavily and both are applied for on iKhedut. Promotion of Organic Farming under State Organic Policy is the policy-level programme covering certification, registration, transport and inputs, while this component is the assistance line for individual farmers and groups adopting organic farming with certification, input and residue-testing support. Check the iKhedut component list for the year to see which one is open.
