Who is eligible for the new writers scheme?

You can apply if:

• You are a new or emerging Gujarati writer publishing an original work of creative or fine literature.
• The manuscript is entirely your own and has never been published as a book.
• The work belongs to creative or fine literature. A novel, a collection of short stories, poetry, a play or literary essays.
• You have not received more than five grants from academies affiliated with this scheme's rules.
• You can supply a bank account in your own name for the transfer.

You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:

• The book has already been published, in any edition or print run.
• The manuscript is a translation, adaptation, compilation or reprint. Gujarat Sahitya Akademi funds translations through a separate scheme.
• The work is a textbook, exam guide or reference manual rather than creative literature.
• You are an established author with a long grant history, beyond the five-grant bar.
• A publisher is applying on its own account instead of the author applying.

Merit is the deciding factor. Gujarat Sahitya Akademi refers each manuscript to expert readers, and a formally complete application with a weak manuscript will not be sanctioned.

How to apply for the new writers grant

2. Find the emerging writers scheme, Navodit Lekhako, and read the linked rules PDF before filling anything in.
3. Click Apply and register or sign in using your mobile number.
4. Complete the form with your name, address, genre of the work, its title, the page count, the intended book size and a short description of the manuscript.
5. Declare your publication history and any earlier academy grants. This is the field the Akademi uses to test new-writer status.
6. Enter your bank account number and IFSC exactly as printed in the passbook.
7. Upload the manuscript, biodata, signed declaration, bank proof and identity proof, then submit and note the application number.
8. Print the submitted form, sign it, attach the physical manuscript copies, and send the packet to the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi office at Gandhinagar before the closing date.

Gujarat Sahitya Akademi sends the manuscript to expert readers in the relevant genre. Approved authors are informed by the Akademi and the sanctioned amount is credited to the bank account given in the application.

The grant is a contribution to printing cost, not a full subsidy. A 200-page poetry collection can cost more to print than the Rs 15,000 ceiling, so plan the balance before you commit to a print run.

• The book is already in print, which takes it outside the scheme entirely.
• The work is not creative literature; guides, compilations and textbooks are ruled out.
• The writer is not new, having drawn more than five earlier academy grants.
• Incomplete packet: no signed declaration, no bank proof, or an unsigned printed form.
• Late submission after the notified last date.
• Bank details mismatch, which blocks the transfer even after sanction.
• Merit, the expert panel did not rate the manuscript. This reason is not fixable by resubmitting the same text.
