Who is eligible for the children's literature grant?

You can apply if:

• You are the original author of the manuscript.

• The manuscript is unpublished. It must not have appeared as a book before.
• The content is age-appropriate for the readership you name in the application.
• You have not already submitted an application under this scheme in the same financial year.

You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:

• The book has already been published in any edition.
• The work is a translation or an adaptation of someone else's book. Gujarat Sahitya Akademi funds translations under a separate scheme.
• You are applying for a second grant in the same financial year.
• The manuscript is not children's literature; adult fiction, poetry and scholarly work fall under the Akademi's other schemes.
• The application is filed by a publisher or press on its own account rather than by the author.

Gujarat Sahitya Akademi's decision rests on literary merit. A manuscript that meets every formal condition can still be declined if the expert panel does not rate it, and the Akademi is not obliged to explain the rating.

How to apply for the children's literature publication grant

1. Open the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi portal at gujaratsahityaacademy.com and go to the Yojana (schemes) list.
2. Select the children's literature scheme, Uttam Maulik Balsahitya, and read the rules PDF linked next to it before you fill anything in.
3. Click Apply on that scheme and register or sign in with your mobile number.
4. Fill the application form with your personal details, the title of the manuscript, its genre, the intended age group, the page count and the book size you plan to print in.
5. Enter your bank account number and IFSC exactly as printed in the passbook. A single wrong digit is the most common cause of a delayed grant.
6. Upload the manuscript, biodata, declaration of originality, bank proof and identity proof.
7. Submit the form and save the application number shown on the confirmation screen.
8. Print the submitted form, sign it, attach the required copies of the manuscript, and send the packet to the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi office at Gandhinagar before the closing date.

How to apply offline

1. Download the scheme's application form and rules PDF from the Akademi's scheme list page.
2. Fill the form in Gujarati by hand or in print, attaching the manuscript, biodata, declaration and bank details.
3. Post or hand-deliver the complete set to the Gujarat Sahitya Akademi, Gandhinagar, so that it reaches the office on or before the last date.

Gujarat Sahitya Akademi does not accept applications by email as a substitute for the physical manuscript, because the expert panel reads the paper copy.

When is the last date to apply?

How is the application processed?

Gujarat Sahitya Akademi routes each manuscript to subject experts in children's literature. The panel judges originality, language, suitability for the stated age group, and whether the work adds something to the existing body of Gujarati children's writing. Approved authors are informed by the Akademi and the grant is transferred to the bank account given in the form.

The sanction carries an expectation that the book will actually be published within about a year. Keep the printing bill and spare copies of the printed book; the Akademi may call for them.

Why applications get rejected

• Manuscript already published, even in a small local edition.
• Not children's literature, the work is really adult fiction or general poetry.
• Second application in the same financial year by the same author.
• Incomplete file; missing declaration of originality, missing bank proof, or an unsigned printed form.
• Application posted after the closing date. A late packet is not held over to the next cycle automatically.
• Bank details mismatch between the form and the passbook, which stops the transfer even after approval.

The fixes are mechanical for all but the first two: re-check the file against the document table above before you post it.
