What is the SHODH scheme in Gujarat?

Scheme of Developing High Quality Research, known everywhere as SHODH, is a research fellowship of the Education Department, Government of Gujarat. SHODH is implemented through the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG), the state body that also runs RUSA, the Interest Subsidy Scheme on education loans and the Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme. The scheme has its own dedicated portal at shodh.gujarat.gov.in, and that portal; not a college notice board and not an agent: is the only route to apply.

SHODH exists to solve a specific, narrow problem. A large number of PhD scholars in Gujarat's state universities carry no fellowship at all. Central fellowships such as UGC-JRF cover only a small fraction of registered scholars, and the rest either take up teaching work that eats their research time or abandon the degree. SHODH puts a monthly stipend behind the scholar directly so that the first two years of doctoral work, the years in which the literature review, the research design and the field or laboratory work are decided: can be done full time.

According to the SHODH portal, a selected scholar receives Rs 15,000 per month for two years and, in addition, Rs 20,000 per year towards incidental expenses. Over the full two-year term this comes to Rs 4,00,000 per scholar. The stipend is paid into the scholar's own bank account; the contingency component is intended for the direct costs of research such as books, journal access, field travel, laboratory consumables and conference participation.

Who is eligible for SHODH?

You can apply for SHODH if:

• You are a registered full-time PhD research scholar at a university in Gujarat State. PhD registration must already be in place at the time of applying. An admission letter or an intention to register is not enough.
• Your university participates in SHODH and has appointed a University Nodal Officer, since all documents are verified by that officer.
• You are within the early part of your doctoral work, because the fellowship runs for the first two years of support and cannot be stretched further.
• You can produce a plagiarism report for your synopsis or proposal, which the portal makes compulsory for new applicants.
• You have a bank account in your own name for the direct credit of the stipend.

You cannot apply for SHODH if:

• You are registered for a PhD with a university outside Gujarat.
• You have not yet obtained PhD registration, including students who have cleared an entrance test but whose registration is pending.
• You are enrolled in a Master's, MPhil or any non-doctoral programme. SHODH is a doctoral fellowship only.
• You have already completed two years of SHODH support; the scheme has a hard 24-month ceiling and is not renewed a third year.
• You submit an application that your University Nodal Officer does not verify within the verification window. An unverified application is not eligible for consideration, however strong the research proposal.

Scholars who already hold a UGC-JRF, SRF, CSIR or equivalent central fellowship should check the current year's notification on shodh.gujarat.gov.in before applying, since drawing two full-time fellowships at once is not normally permitted in Indian fellowship rules.

What documents are required for SHODH?

Keep every upload legible and in the file size and format the portal specifies. The single most common avoidable failure is an unreadable scan of the PhD registration letter, which the nodal officer cannot verify and must return.

How to apply for SHODH online

1. Open the official portal at shodh.gujarat.gov.in during the announced application window and read the current year's notification and instructions before starting.
2. Register on the portal as a new applicant using your email address and mobile number, and set a password. Keep the login details, since the same account is used later to check status.
3. Fill in the online application form with your personal details, university name, PhD registration number and date, research supervisor's name, subject area and proposed research title.
4. Upload the required documents; PhD registration letter, synopsis, plagiarism report, Aadhaar, marksheets, guide certificate and bank passbook.
5. Submit the form before the closing date and time, and save or print the acknowledgement showing your application number.
6. Contact your University Nodal Officer and complete document verification within the verification window. Carry the original documents when the officer asks for them.
7. Track the result on the portal using your login. Selected scholars are published in a merit list on shodh.gujarat.gov.in.

For the 2025-26 cycle the portal recorded these dates: applications opened on 19 February 2026, closed on 20 April 2026 at 6:00 PM, and document verification ran from 16 March to 24 April 2026. Treat these as the shape of a normal cycle rather than as fixed annual dates: each year's exact schedule is notified afresh on the portal.

How is the SHODH offline part handled?

SHODH has no offline application form. The only offline step is document verification by the University Nodal Officer, and it is a real step, not a formality. Each participating university appoints a nodal officer who checks the uploaded documents against originals and forwards verified applications to KCG. A scholar whose university has not appointed or announced a nodal officer should raise this with the university's research or PhD section immediately, because an application that nobody verifies simply lapses.

If a scholar cannot reach the nodal officer, KCG allows in-person visits at its office on Tuesdays and Fridays, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and answers queries on the helpline 9979200152 between 10:30 AM and 6:00 PM on working days.

How do you check your SHODH application status?

1. Log in to shodh.gujarat.gov.in with the email address and password used at registration.
2. Open the application dashboard, which shows whether the form is submitted, whether the nodal officer has verified it, and whether it has moved to screening.
3. Watch the notice or announcement section of the portal for the provisional and final selection lists.
4. If the dashboard shows "pending verification" close to the deadline, contact your nodal officer directly rather than waiting.

Why do SHODH applications get rejected?

• PhD registration not complete on the date of application, which is the single most common disqualification.
• Plagiarism report missing or uploaded as an unreadable file.
• Nodal officer verification not done inside the verification window.
• Mismatch between portal details and documents. A registration number, registration date or supervisor name that does not match the university record.
• Bank account not in the applicant's name, or a closed or dormant account, which blocks the stipend even after selection.
• Application submitted after the closing time. The 6:00 PM cut-off on the last day is enforced by the portal.

Most of these are fixable before submission. Compare every field on the online form against the original PhD registration letter, character by character, and have the nodal officer look at the application well before the last week.

SHODH charges nothing. No agent, consultancy or "fellowship facilitation" firm can get a scholar selected, and no KCG or university official will ask for a payment or for your portal password.
