What is the Internship Programme for Women Students, Scholars, Social Activists and Teachers?

The Internship Programme for Women Students / Scholars / Social Activists / Teachers is run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD), Government of India. According to the Ministry, the programme is designed to familiarise women with the Ministry's policies and programmes through a short-term association, giving them qualitative exposure while tapping their talent to contribute to policy formulation and to work on issues affecting women and children.

Who is eligible for the WCD internship?

You can apply if:

4. Submit the application within the open window and note the acknowledgement.
5. Await selection. The Ministry shortlists up to 20 interns per batch and informs selected candidates about their placement, term and, where needed, hostel accommodation.

How to check your application status

1. Log back in to wcd.intern.nic.in with the credentials used at the time of application. If the portal shows an application dashboard or reference number, that is the primary place to check whether your form was received and is under review.
2. Save your acknowledgement details at submission time. Since no separate tracking ID system is advertised, the acknowledgement screen or email generated right after you submit is the only proof you have that the application went through, note the date, term and any reference number shown.
3. Watch for a direct communication from the Ministry. Selection for this programme is by shortlisting, not a published merit list or rank, so most applicants only hear back if selected. The Ministry contacts shortlisted candidates directly, typically by email or phone, with placement, term and hostel details.
4. Treat "no response" as informative once the term has started. Because each term runs only two months and takes up to 20 interns, if a term's start date has passed and you have not been contacted, your application was not selected for that cycle. Common reasons for rejection

• Applying from an ineligible (tier-I) city. The scheme excludes Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune by design. Applicants who list a permanent or current address in one of these cities are screened out regardless of how strong their profile is. Fix: apply only if your home city or place of association is genuinely outside this list, and be accurate about which address you submit, do not use a temporary Delhi address if your actual home base is a tier-I city.
• Weak or missing proof of residence/home city. Since eligibility hinges on being from a non-tier-I city or rural area, an application with no clear document establishing this, or one where the address on the ID proof does not match the declared home city, is likely to be rejected on eligibility grounds. Fix: submit a document that clearly and consistently shows your non-tier-I address, and make sure it matches the address you declare in the form.
• No genuine institutional or associational link. The programme is for women who are enrolled in or associated with a university or an academic/non-academic institution, not open to any applicant regardless of affiliation. An application with no proof of enrolment or association, or a vague/unverifiable one, is a common rejection point. Fix: attach a specific enrolment letter, ID card, or association certificate rather than a generic claim of affiliation.
• Missing the exact application window. Applications are only accepted from the 1st to the 10th of March, June, September and December. A form submitted even a day outside this window for a given term is not considered, since there is no rolling acceptance. Fix: track the portal ahead of the window you want and submit early within it rather than waiting until the last day.
• Incomplete or generic statement of purpose. While the statement of purpose is not mandatory, a shortlisting-based selection process favours applicants who clearly state which policy area they want to work on and why. A blank or generic statement does not help distinguish an application in a competitive pool of up to 20 seats per term. Fix: write a specific, honest statement connecting your background (student, scholar, activist or teacher) to a concrete area of the Ministry's work.
• Applying as a man. This internship is explicitly reserved for women. Male applicants are ineligible outright and their applications will not be considered no matter how complete the rest of the form is.
