What is the JanSamarth portal?
JanSamarth is the national portal for credit-linked government schemes, run by the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance. JanSamarth was launched on 6 June 2022 and brings central government subsidy-linked loan schemes onto a single digital platform, so an applicant does not have to visit multiple bank branches to find out which scheme fits.
According to the Department of Financial Services, JanSamarth hosts 15 credit-linked central government schemes and has onboarded about 250 lenders, public sector banks, private banks, regional rural banks, District Central Cooperative Banks, small finance banks and NBFCs. The portal is available at jansamarth.in, through Android and iOS apps, and in 8 languages.
Key objectives
- Widen the reach of government-sponsored credit schemes to first-time borrowers who do not know which scheme they qualify for.
- Replace branch-by-branch enquiry with one online eligibility check that returns every scheme an applicant is suited to.
- Give banks a standardised, verified digital application, reducing the time from application to in-principle approval.
Main features
- A digital eligibility tool: you answer a short set of questions and the portal lists every scheme you match.
- Integration with Aadhaar, GST, income tax and agriculture databases so details are fetched rather than typed.
- Digital in-principle approval issued online before the bank's final sanction.
- A real-time dashboard for monitoring and a dedicated grievance channel.
What loan categories does JanSamarth cover?
JanSamarth groups its schemes into four broad categories.
- Education loans; government-backed student loan schemes for higher studies in India and abroad.
- Agriculture infrastructure loans; Kisan Credit Card, the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, e-Kisan Upaj Nidhi and Agri Clinics and Agri Business Centres.
- Business activity loans: PM Mudra Yojana, the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), startup loans and the credit guarantee scheme for exporters.
- Livelihood loans; PM SVANidhi for street vendors, the Weaver Mudra Scheme, Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana and NAMASTE for sanitation workers.
Housing finance under PM Awas Yojana (Urban) and financing for rooftop solar installation are also available on the portal.
Who is eligible for JanSamarth?
JanSamarth itself has no eligibility bar, anyone can register and run the free eligibility check. Eligibility is decided by the underlying scheme you select, and the portal's questionnaire is what maps you to it.
You can use JanSamarth if:
- You are an Indian resident with a valid Aadhaar number and mobile number.
- You are seeking credit for a purpose covered by one of the 15 hosted schemes — education, farming, a micro or small business, a livelihood activity, urban housing or rooftop solar.
- You are willing to complete online KYC and share PAN and bank details.
You cannot apply through JanSamarth if:
- Your credit requirement does not fall under any of the 15 hosted schemes: ordinary personal loans, vehicle loans and credit cards are not eligible and are not available on the portal.
- You do not meet the specific scheme's own criteria, for example the age, income, caste-category, activity or project-cost conditions written into PMEGP, PM SVANidhi or the Weaver Mudra Scheme.
- You are an existing defaulter with a lender; banks will decline at the appraisal stage even if the portal shows you as eligible.
Clearing the portal's eligibility check is not a loan sanction. The bank you choose runs its own credit appraisal and may still decline.
What documents are required for JanSamarth?

How to apply for a loan on JanSamarth online
- Open the official portal at jansamarth.in, or install the JanSamarth app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Select the loan category that matches your need, Education, Agriculture Infrastructure, Business Activity or Livelihood.
- Register with your mobile number and verify it using the OTP, then complete Aadhaar-based authentication.
- Answer the eligibility questionnaire. The portal returns the list of schemes you qualify for, with the loan limit and subsidy applicable to each.
- Select the scheme you want and check the subsidy or interest benefit shown on screen before proceeding.
- Fill in the application form. Details linked to Aadhaar, PAN and GST are fetched automatically; check them and correct anything wrong.
- Upload the scanned documents listed for that scheme.
- Choose a lender from the banks mapped to your location and the selected scheme, then submit the application.
- Note the application reference number and track the status on the portal until the digital in-principle approval and then the bank's final sanction.
What happens after you submit a JanSamarth application?
JanSamarth issues a digital in-principle approval once the portal's checks clear. The application then moves to the bank branch you selected. The branch verifies your documents, runs its credit appraisal and issues the sanction letter. Disbursement follows the terms of the underlying scheme, for PMEGP, for example, the margin money subsidy is credited only after the bank disburses and the unit is verified.
Track every stage from the applicant dashboard on jansamarth.in using your registered mobile number.

Common reasons JanSamarth applications get rejected
- Scheme criteria not met, the applicant clears the portal's screening questions but fails the scheme's detailed conditions at the branch.
- PAN and Aadhaar mismatch, which stops the automated verification.
- Weak credit history or an existing default with any lender.
- Incomplete or unreadable document uploads, the most common avoidable reason.
- Project report gaps in PMEGP and startup applications, where the bank is not satisfied about viability.
- Wrong branch mapping; choosing a branch that does not operate the scheme in your district.
How JanSamarth differs from applying at a bank branch
JanSamarth does not replace the bank; it standardises the front end. Applying directly at a branch means the borrower must already know which scheme to name, and branch staff decide which forms to hand over. On JanSamarth, the eligibility questionnaire runs first and returns every one of the 15 schemes the applicant matches, with the subsidy or interest benefit attached to each shown before the application is filed.
The second difference is choice of lender. Because about 250 lenders are onboarded, an applicant sees the banks and NBFCs mapped to their district and the selected scheme, rather than being limited to the branch they walked into. The third is traceability: every application carries a reference number and a status trail, which is what the grievance channel works from.
What JanSamarth does not change is the credit decision. Scheme rules, margin money, collateral norms and the bank's appraisal all continue to apply exactly as they would offline.
Practical tips before you apply on JanSamarth
- Check that your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar before you start, since the portal authenticates through OTP.
- Keep scanned copies under the size limit shown on the upload screen; oversized or blurred files are the most common cause of resubmission.
- Run the eligibility check before deciding on a scheme. Applicants often assume Mudra is the only option and miss PMEGP or PM SVANidhi, which carry a subsidy.
- For business schemes, prepare a short project report with cost, capacity and expected revenue. Banks decline PMEGP and startup applications most often on viability grounds.
- Choose a branch that actually operates the scheme in your district.
JanSamarth registration is free. No agent or middleman is authorised to charge you for filing an application, and no official will ask for your OTP.
