What is the State Talent Search Examination in Mathematics and Science?

State Talent Search Examination (STSE) in Mathematics and Science for Tribal Students of Meghalaya at the Close of Upper Primary Stage is a talent-search examination conducted by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Education Department, Government of Meghalaya. DERT lists conducting a talent search examination for tribal students of Meghalaya for the award of a talent incentive and scholarship among its core duties, alongside the National Talent Search Examination and the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination.

The examination sits at the close of the Upper Primary stage, which in Meghalaya means the end of Class VIII. Students who have already shown competence in Mathematics and Science in the Class VIII annual examination write two more papers, and those selected receive a one-time talent incentive award of Rs 20,500 with a certificate.

STSE is not a general scholarship. It is a merit competition with a fixed subject focus, Mathematics and Science, and a fixed community focus, the Scheduled Tribes of Meghalaya. The State Government funds it 100 per cent, and the state portal records the beneficiary community as ST.

Who runs what

  • DERT, Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah, Shillong 793011 designs the examination, fixes the date, declares the result and releases the award money.
  • Sub-Divisional School Education Officers (SDSEOs) receive the candidate lists, issue admit cards and conduct the examination in their sub-divisions.
  • Head Teachers and Principals submit the names and, after the result, forward the selected students' documents to DERT.

Who is eligible for STSE in Meghalaya?

The DERT notice sets three conditions, and all three must be met.

A student can be entered if:

  • The student is a Scheduled Tribe of Meghalaya.
  • The student studied in Class VIII in the relevant year in any type of school in Meghalaya, government, deficit, aided, adhoc or private.
  • The student scored at least 50 marks in Mathematics and at least 50 marks in Science in that Class VIII examination.

A student is not eligible if:

  • The student does not belong to a Scheduled Tribe of Meghalaya. The examination is reserved by design; general-category and non-tribal students cannot apply.
  • The student scored below 50 in either Mathematics or Science. The two thresholds are separate โ€” 80 in Science does not compensate for 45 in Mathematics.
  • The student's Class VIII was completed outside Meghalaya.
  • The student is out of the Class VIII cohort for the year being examined. STSE is tied to a specific year's Class VIII batch, not to an age band.

There is also a procedural bar worth stating plainly: a student cannot enter directly. The Head Teacher or Principal must submit the name. A student whose school misses the SDSEO deadline has no separate individual route in.

What does a selected student get?

Selected candidates receive a one-time talent incentive award of Rs 20,500 along with a certificate, as stated in the DERT notice. The Meghalaya state portal additionally describes the benefit as a scholarship availed over two years, so the certificate and the incentive together are intended to support the student through the secondary stage that follows Class VIII.

The award is paid directly into the student's savings bank account through NEFT or RTGS by DERT. There is no cash disbursement, no payment through the school's account and no requirement to buy anything specific with the money.

How to apply for the State Talent Search Examination

  1. Check the two subject scores on the Class VIII marksheet. Confirm at least 50 marks in Mathematics and at least 50 marks in Science before doing anything else, because these are the entry gates.
  2. Give the school your documents. Hand the Head Teacher or Principal a copy of the Class VIII marksheet and the Scheduled Tribe certificate. DERT names exactly these two attachments in its notice.
  3. The school fills the prescribed statement form with the names of all eligible candidates and submits it, with the documents, to the concerned Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO) on or before the date announced by DERT. For the 2025 examination that date was 24 April 2026.
  4. Collect the admit card from the SDSEO through the school. The SDSEO issues admit cards and conducts the examination.
  5. Appear for both papers on the notified date. The 2025 examination was held on 23 May 2026 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
  6. If selected, submit the payment documents. Send the Class VIII marksheet, the Scheduled Tribe certificate and the front page of the savings bank account passbook through the Principal to DERT, either by post or by email to dert.stse@gmail.com.

What is the examination pattern?

Paper Sections Marks
Paper I Mental Ability Test 25
Paper I Mathematics 75
Paper II General Science 25
Paper II Science 75

Both papers total 100 marks each and are written in the same sitting from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Mental Ability Test component mirrors the structure DERT uses for the National Talent Search Examination and the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Examination, so past NTSE and NMMS question booklets with answer keys published on the DERT downloads page are the closest legitimate practice material available for free.

How do I check the result and the payment?

STSE has no live online status tracker. The result is published as a notice with a ranked list, sub-division by sub-division.

  • Result: DERT declares the result on the Education Department website, megeducation.gov.in, and on the DERT notice board page. The result for the 2025 examination was declared on 14 July 2026 and lists students by SDSEO with rank, name of student, name of school, roll number and category.
  • Copies: DERT routes the result to the Director of School Education and Literacy, the Under Secretary in the Education Department, all District School Education Officers, all Sub-Divisional School Education Officers and the principals concerned, so your school office will have it.
  • Payment: Once documents are submitted, follow up through the Principal with DERT at dert.stse@gmail.com. Because payment is by NEFT or RTGS, a wrong account number or a mismatched name on the passbook is the usual cause of a failed credit.

Why do candidates get left out, and how do you fix it?

  • The school did not submit the name in time. This is the single biggest cause. The SDSEO deadline is absolute and the student has no individual entry route. Ask the Head Teacher in writing, well before April, whether the school has sent the statement form.
  • Marks just below the threshold. A score of 49 in Mathematics is a disqualification, not a rounding matter.
  • Scheduled Tribe certificate not attached or not from the competent authority. DERT asks for it twice, at entry and after selection. Get it from the competent revenue authority in your district.
  • Bank details wrong at the payment stage. The front page of the savings bank passbook must be legible and the account should be in the student's own name. A closed or dormant account will bounce the NEFT credit.
  • Documents sent by the student instead of the Principal. The declaration notice specifies that documents go to the Principal, who submits them to DERT.

What are the key dates?

The dates move each year and DERT announces them by notice. For the most recent cycle, the pattern was: notice issued in April 2026 for the year 2025 examination, names to reach the SDSEO on or before 24 April 2026, examination on 23 May 2026 (Saturday) from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and result declared on 14 July 2026. Treat that as the shape of the calendar rather than a fixed rule, and watch the DERT notice board on megeducation.gov.in from March onwards.

Where do I complain?

Take any dispute. A name omitted from the school list, a result query, or an award that has not reached the bank account, to the Directorate of Educational Research and Training, Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah, Shillong 793011. The Directorate's published email is dertmegh@gmail.com and the examination cell for this scheme uses dert.stse@gmail.com. If the matter is not resolved, the Education Department office at Room 222, Ground Floor, Additional Secretariat, Shillong, phone 0364-2224201, is the next level. Route the complaint through the school where possible, since DERT deals with the Principal rather than with students directly for this scheme.
