What is the NCESS Internship Scheme?

The National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) Internship Scheme is the student-training programme of NCESS, an autonomous research centre under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, based at Akkulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Through this scheme NCESS offers internships, summer training and dissertation projects to students who are pursuing university-level education in the earth sciences and allied subjects, so that they can carry out part of their curriculum-linked research at a national laboratory under the guidance of working scientists.

According to the NCESS opportunities page, the programme gives selected students hands-on exposure to earth-science research; from fieldwork and laboratory analysis to data interpretation, that is difficult to get in a normal college setting. It is a training and mentorship opportunity rather than a financial benefit: there is no stipend, no fee, and no accommodation or transport provided.

NCESS conducts research across earth-system themes such as coastal and continental-shelf processes, crustal studies, geomorphology and natural-hazard assessment. An intern is therefore typically attached to a scientist working on one of these themes and contributes to a defined slice of an ongoing project — sample analysis, field data processing or literature review, which then feeds their dissertation or training report. This is what distinguishes the scheme from a classroom project: the work is embedded in the centre's live research programme.

Who is eligible for the NCESS Internship Scheme?

A student can apply if they are currently enrolled in:

• A five-year Integrated M.Sc / M.Sc Tech / M.Tech programme (7th to 9th semester), or
• A three-year M.Sc / M.Sc Tech programme (3rd to 5th semester), or
• A two-year M.Sc / M.Sc Tech / M.Tech programme (2nd to 3rd semester), or
• The final year of a B.Sc programme.

The subject should be in earth sciences or a closely related discipline relevant to NCESS research, and the application must carry the support of the applicant's department head and an institutional NOC.

A candidate cannot apply and is not eligible if:

• They have already completed their degree and are no longer enrolled.
• They are school students or in an early undergraduate year not covered above.
• They cannot obtain a No Objection Certificate from their college or university.

How to apply for the NCESS Internship Scheme

1. Watch the application window. Applications open only from 1 to 28 February and from 1 to 30 September each year. Late submissions are not accepted.
2. Apply online through the NCESS opportunities page (ncess.gov.in/opportunities.php) during the open window, entering your course, semester and area of interest.
3. Attach the required proofs, bonafide certificate, mark sheets and an NOC from your institution.
4. Check the results. Shortlisted candidates are announced on the NCESS website in the first week of May (for the February window) and the first week of December (for the September window).
5. Report with the signed form. Selected students must bring a printed application form signed by their department head and complete at least 8 weeks of continuous training, ending with a short presentation.

How much benefit does the scheme provide?

The NCESS internship provides research training, mentorship and access to NCESS facilities, not money. Per the NCESS opportunities page, there is no fee for carrying out project work, but no accommodation or transport is provided, so interns must arrange their own stay in Thiruvananthapuram. The value of the scheme is the supervised earth-science research experience and the completed dissertation or training report it produces.

How to check your application status

NCESS does not run an online applicant dashboard or a tracking ID system for this internship, so status checking works differently from most government schemes.

• Watch the NCESS opportunities page directly. Results are not emailed individually; they are posted as a list on ncess.gov.in/opportunities.php. Check the page in the first week of May if you applied in the February window, or the first week of December if you applied in the September window.
• Match your name and application details against the shortlist posted there. If the page lists selected candidates by name, course and institution, confirm your entry matches what you submitted.
• Write to the visiting-students desk if the list is delayed or unclear. Since there is no helpline number, email visitingstudents[at]ncess[dot]gov[dot]in with your application details (name, course, semester, date of submission) and ask for confirmation of receipt or status, especially if the announcement date has passed and no list has appeared.
• Do not assume rejection from silence. Because there is no acknowledgment email sent at the time of submission, the only confirmation of whether your application was even received is the shortlist itself or a reply from the visiting-students desk.
• If selected, act on the reporting instructions promptly. The shortlist post typically comes with reporting dates; missing the reporting window can be treated the same as not being selected, since NCESS does not offer make-up sessions for the 8-week block.

Common reasons for rejection

• Applying outside the window. Applications are accepted only from 1 to 28 February and 1 to 30 September. A form submitted even a day after the window closes is not entertained, and there is no provision to backdate or resubmit it. The fix is to prepare all documents in advance and submit early in the window rather than close to the last date.
• No NOC from the institution. A missing or informally worded No Objection Certificate is one of the most common reasons applications are set aside, since NCESS requires this as proof that the college or university has released the student for external project work. Get the NOC issued on the institution's letterhead, signed by the appropriate authority, before applying.
• Ineligible course stage. Applying while in an earlier semester than what the scheme allows (for example, a B.Sc student who is not yet in the final year, or an M.Sc student below the specified semester range) leads to rejection because the applicant does not yet meet the coursework stage NCESS expects for a research placement. Check the semester ranges for your specific programme (2-year, 3-year, or 5-year integrated) before applying.
• Subject area mismatch. Because NCESS research is concentrated in earth sciences, coastal processes, geomorphology and related fields, applications from students in unrelated disciplines, or from a discipline too loosely connected to earth science, are less likely to be shortlisted. Applicants should state a specific area of interest that aligns with NCESS's actual research themes rather than a generic project request.
• Incomplete or unsigned form at the reporting stage. Even after shortlisting, a candidate who reports without the application form signed by their department head, or without the original NOC and enrolment proof in hand, risks losing the seat, since these are checked again at reporting. Carry signed physical copies, not just the online submission, when reporting for the internship.
• No response to the department-head signature requirement. Some applications are filed online without first securing the department head's willingness to sign the printed form later; if that signature cannot be obtained in time for reporting, the seat is effectively forfeited. Confirm departmental sign-off before submitting the online application, not after being shortlisted.
